Change declaration when converting FM with MIF2GO

2011-05-11 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up a first conversion of a structured Framemaker 8 manual
(p277) to DITA XML via MIF2GO.
Everything looks OK, except for the declaration 'override'. I need an override
because I upload the resulting XMLs in Docato (EMC product). After upload
editing is done with Serna.
I found this in the MIF2GO help:

_

Mif2Go sets the following default values for the PUBLIC declaration, depending
on the DITA version and on the topic type. For example, for DITA version 1.1
and topic type concept:

[HTMLOptions]

HTMLDocType=-//OASIS//DTD DITA 1.1 Concept//EN

HTMLDTD=docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.1/CS01/dtd/concept.dtd

If you need the declaration to comply with the requirements of third-party
tools, you can override the default values. For XMetaL, for example:

[HTMLOptions]

HTMLDocType=-//OASIS//DTD DITA Composite//EN

HTMLDTD=ditabase.dtd

My problem is two-fold:

1) MIF2GO does not seem to pick up any change I make to this declaration (other
changes in the .ini do).

2) If it would work what's the change I need to make to have the following
resulting declaration:

concept xmlns:xsa3=http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/;
xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; id=id xml:lang=en-us
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=../../catalog/concept.xsd

Thanks for your help!

Regards,

Tom

RE: Structured Frame Reference Guides

2011-05-11 Thread Fei Min Lorente
Hi Tim:

I think that using a paragraph element inherently determines that you
have to have a paragraph break. Perhaps you really want a text range
element?

As for FrameMaker 8 reference guides for structured FrameMaker, I
remember that Scriptorium explained why they published a guide to
unstructured FrameMaker 8, but not a structured one. However, I don't
remember the reason. Maybe someone else can help me out here.

I suspect that if you find a third-party guide to structured FrameMaker
7, you'll be fine.

I am running (unstructured) FM10 on Win7 with a single FM10 issue:
My current machine is a 64-bit Win7 at work and a 32-bit Win7 at home. I work

Re: Structured Frame Reference Guides

2011-05-11 Thread Scott Turner
Fei Min is correct. I've found that the Structure Development Guide that is in
the Online Manuals folder in FrameMaker 7 is invaluable.

Paragraph styles will always have a paragraph break in them. Text range (which
will translate to a Character style) doesn't require a para break.

RE: Converting Word doc to Frame.

2011-05-11 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Second that. And to further elaborate: On Page 5 of that document, Tim
Murray notes, Frame could care less if a heading is named Heading 1 or
Fred_Flintstone, so you don't really have to mess with Word's style
names before the conversion unless you want to change the style names to
match the target template.
When I've used Tim's document, I did exactly that: I defined styles in
Word that matched what I had and wanted in the Frame template. Then I
styled the Word doc so that it had only the same-named styles as Frame
and then did the import. BTW, Jack Lyon, over on the Editorium, has a
Delete Unused Styles macro that's very helpful for getting rid of the
detritus in a Word doc or template so that the Word doc you're importing
into Frame with your File-Import command only has the limited set of
styles that you want and need.

HTH,
Jim

Correct. The problem is that FM 10 broke back compatibility
for MIF generation. Again. So for FM 10, you need the latest
files, which are not part of the demo version yet; links to
them are provided in the download instructions sent to new
registered users. We'll be adding that to the demo in the
next release.

There is no problem at all with Win 7, except that you need
to install the files that used to go into \windows\system32
to \windows\syswow64 instead for the 64-bit version. That
info is on the Web site right under the download links.

RE: Structured Frame Reference Guides

2011-05-11 Thread Herbert Leusink
Hi Tim,

Can't help you with any books, but there are two possible solutions for
problem, depending on the situation or type of elements (inline or container)

(Note: using the EDD element names in bold below)

1. Use ParagraphFormatting/PropertiesPagination/Placement/RunInHead.
You have to also specify the DefaultPunctuation, which can be set to a space

2. Use TextRangeFormatting instead of ParagraphFormatting. This is
normally done for inline elements, but you could force a container element to
become inline this way.

Make a URL non-breaking

Example:

For documentation and more information, visit http://freeadhocudf.org

breaks across the end of a line like this:

For documentation and more information, visit http://

It seems the slash character behaves like a breaking hyphen but I can't seem to
find out how to fix this!

Sorry, the live links were put there by my email client. At the moment, I'm
not seeking to put live links in the Frame document. It would be OK to have
them if there were no other option, though.

Hi Helen:

I don't know which version of FrameMaker you're using, so this might not
be exactly the same. On FrameMaker 7.2, under the Format menu, there is
a Document option. Choose Text Options. I have a field there that says
Allow Line Breaks After:. You ought to have a slash character in that
field. If you delete it, then it won't break there any more.

My problem is two-fold:

1) MIF2GO does not seem to pick up any change I make to this declaration
(other changes in the .ini do).

We'd have to see a test case to determine why it is not working
for you. That means a short (one page) doc, with the .fm, .mif
(very important), .inis, .prj, and all output files including the
log file, all in one .zip.

2) If it would work what's the change I need to make to have the following
resulting declaration:

concept xmlns:xsa3=http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/;
xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; id=id xml:lang=en-us
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=../../catalog/concept.xsd

You wouldn't use the settings above for that; this is the root
element, not the doctype declaration. You would use:

[DITATopicRootAttrs]
; Frame para format for topic title (wildcards OK) = attributes for
; the root element of the current topic. It can be overridden by a
; DITATopicRootAttr marker.

If your starting Frame format were conhead, you'd use:

conhead=xmlns:xsa3=http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/;
 xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance;
 xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=../../catalog/concept.xsd

except you'd have to have it all on one line (not possible
in this post). If you want it for all topics, use * instead
of conhead.

Tim,

Inside the text formatting rules you would make the element a text range.
You'll see the exact element name in the Element Catalog.

Change declaration when converting FM with MIF2GO

2011-05-11 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up a first conversion of a structured Framemaker 8 manual
(p277) to DITA XML via MIF2GO.
Everything looks OK, except for the declaration 'override'. I need an override
because I upload the resulting XMLs in Docato (EMC product). After upload
editing is done with Serna.
I found this in the MIF2GO help:

_

Mif2Go sets the following default values for the PUBLIC declaration, depending
on the DITA version and on the topic type. For example, for DITA version 1.1
and topic type concept:

[HTMLOptions]

HTMLDocType="-//OASIS//DTD DITA 1.1 Concept//EN"

HTMLDTD="docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.1/CS01/dtd/concept.dtd"

If you need the declaration to comply with the requirements of third-party
tools, you can override the default values. For XMetaL, for example:

[HTMLOptions]

HTMLDocType="-//OASIS//DTD DITA Composite//EN"

HTMLDTD="ditabase.dtd"

My problem is two-fold:

1) MIF2GO does not seem to pick up any change I make to this declaration (other
changes in the .ini do).

2) If it would work what's the change I need to make to have the following
resulting declaration:

http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/;
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; id="id" xml:lang="en-us"
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="../../catalog/concept.xsd">

Thanks for your help!

I think that using a paragraph element inherently determines that you

element?

As for FrameMaker 8 reference guides for structured FrameMaker, I

remember the reason. Maybe someone else can help me out here.

I suspect that if you find a third-party guide to structured FrameMaker

structured Framemaker. I see plenty of versions 7 and 9, but no 8.

Am I one of the few people using that version of Frame? Is there a book

Specifically, I am setting up an EDD file and I can't decipher via the
Adobe help files how to create an element that does not insert a
paragraph break. Paragraph formats all have paragraph breaks after them,
and I don't see a way to "turn that off" from within the EDD.

Any help with either question would be much appreciated.

FM 10 and Win 7 -- any "gotchas"/problems?

2011-05-11 Thread John Sgammato
I am running (unstructured) FM10 on Win7 with a single FM10 issue:
My current machine is a 64-bit Win7 at work and a 32-bit Win7 at home. I work
on all files on both machines with almost no problems. The problem I had was
converting an 86-chapter book to OmniHelp using Mif2Go. It turns out there are
new Mif2Go files for FM10. Note that this is a Mif2Go - FM10 issue that I think
is unrelated to Win7, but if you are using Mif2Go then you need to know about
it.

Hi,
IT recently upgraded my FM version to FM 10 and now it seems I'm running into a
resource issue (either processor speed or RAM--they think). As part of the
solution, they're advocating that I change my computer from Win XP to Win 7.

I know there's been some discussion in the past about Win 7 not "playing nice"
with FrameMaker.? Is this still the case and if so, can someone please describe
what's the issue?? I just want to be aware of any "gotchas" prior to them
changing over my machine. I'd appreciate any insight anyone has into this
issue. (Note that I'm also running FM
7.2 and 9 on the same machine that has FM 10.)

Thanks,

Structured Frame Reference Guides

2011-05-11 Thread Scott Turner
Fei Min is correct. I've found that the Structure Development Guide that is in
the Online Manuals folder in FrameMaker 7 is invaluable.

Paragraph styles will always have a paragraph break in them. Text range (which
will translate to a Character style) doesn't require a para break.

Converting Word doc to Frame.

2011-05-11 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Second that. And to further elaborate: On Page 5 of that document, Tim
Murray notes, "Frame could care less if a heading is named Heading 1 or
Fred_Flintstone, so you don't really have to mess with Word's style
names before the conversion unless you want to change the style names to
match the target template."

Structured Frame Reference Guides

2011-05-11 Thread Herbert Leusink
Hi Tim,

Can't help you with any books, but there are two possible solutions for
problem, depending on the situation or type of elements (inline or container)

(Note: using the EDD element names in bold below)

1. Use ParagraphFormatting/PropertiesPagination/Placement/RunInHead.
You have to also specify the DefaultPunctuation, which can be set to a space

2. Use TextRangeFormatting instead of ParagraphFormatting. This is
normally done for inline elements, but you could force a container element to
become inline this way.

HTH!

I can't find any third party Frame 8 reference guides that talk about
structured Framemaker. I see plenty of versions 7 and 9, but no 8.

Am I one of the few people using that version of Frame? Is there a book
somewhere that I can purchase?

Specifically, I am setting up an EDD file and I can't decipher via the Adobe
help files how to create an element that does not insert a paragraph break.
Paragraph formats all have paragraph breaks after them, and I don't see a way
to "turn that off" from within the EDD.

Any help with either question would be much appreciated.

Subject: FM 10 and Win 7 -- any "gotchas"/problems?

Hi,
IT recently upgraded my FM version to FM 10 and now it seems I'm running into a
resource issue (either processor speed or RAM--they think).

Thanks,
Melissa

Decipher Distiller Error

2011-05-11 Thread Jennifer Randel
Thank you to all who took the time to respond to me about this issue. Turning
off that "Generate Tagged PDF" option did the trick!

Kind regards,
Jennifer

Try turning off "Generate Tagged PDF" in FrameMaker's PDF Setup dialog box,
Tags tab and distill again.

Make a URL non-breaking

2011-05-11 Thread Fei Min Lorente
Hi Helen:

I don't know which version of FrameMaker you're using, so this might not
be exactly the same. On FrameMaker 7.2, under the Format menu, there is
a Document option. Choose Text Options. I have a field there that says
"Allow Line Breaks After:". You ought to have a slash character in that
field. If you delete it, then it won't break there any more.

Example:

For documentation and more information, visit http://freeadhocudf.org

breaks across the end of a line like this:

For documentation and more information, visit http://
freeadhocudf.org.

It seems the slash character behaves like a breaking hyphen but I can't
seem to find out how to fix this!

Sorry, the live links were put there by my email client. At the moment,
I'm not seeking to put live links in the Frame document. It would be OK
to have them if there were no other option, though.

Thanks,
Helen

Embed MS Excel File in FM8?

2011-05-11 Thread Miller, Chris M
Hi all,

Can I embed a MS Excel file into FrameMaker as a link so that when I convert it
to PDF or WebHelp (via RoboHelp) the Excel file is accessible to the reader?
My research tells me "no" but figured I'd reach out to the FM gurus of the
group to double-check. ;)

We currently use Tech Comm Suite 1.3 (Frame 8, RoboHelp 7) but will be
upgrading within the next month to Tech Comm Suite 3 -- so if it's possible in
the later version, that would be great to know as well.

Thanks in advance,
Chris
