Change declaration when converting FM with MIF2GO
Hi everyone, I'm trying to set up a first conversion of a structured Framemaker 8 manual (p277) to DITA XML via MIF2GO. Everything looks OK, except for the declaration 'override'. I need an override because I upload the resulting XMLs in Docato (EMC product). After upload editing is done with Serna. I found this in the MIF2GO help: _ Mif2Go sets the following default values for the PUBLIC declaration, depending on the DITA version and on the topic type. For example, for DITA version 1.1 and topic type concept: [HTMLOptions] HTMLDocType=-//OASIS//DTD DITA 1.1 Concept//EN HTMLDTD=docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.1/CS01/dtd/concept.dtd If you need the declaration to comply with the requirements of third-party tools, you can override the default values. For XMetaL, for example: [HTMLOptions] HTMLDocType=-//OASIS//DTD DITA Composite//EN HTMLDTD=ditabase.dtd My problem is two-fold: 1) MIF2GO does not seem to pick up any change I make to this declaration (other changes in the .ini do). 2) If it would work what's the change I need to make to have the following resulting declaration: concept xmlns:xsa3=http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/; xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; id=id xml:lang=en-us xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=../../catalog/concept.xsd Thanks for your help! RE: Structured Frame Reference Guides
Hi Tim: I think that using a paragraph element inherently determines that you have to have a paragraph break. Perhaps you really want a text range element? Re: Structured Frame Reference Guides
Fei Min is correct. I've found that the Structure Development Guide that is in the Online Manuals folder in FrameMaker 7 is invaluable. Paragraph styles will always have a paragraph break in them. Text range (which will translate to a Character style) doesn't require a para break. RE: Converting Word doc to Frame.
Second that. And to further elaborate: On Page 5 of that document, Tim Murray notes, Frame could care less if a heading is named Heading 1 or Fred_Flintstone, so you don't really have to mess with Word's style names before the conversion unless you want to change the style names to match the target template. When I've used Tim's document, I did exactly that: I defined styles in Word that matched what I had and wanted in the Frame template. Then I styled the Word doc so that it had only the same-named styles as Frame and then did the import. BTW, Jack Lyon, over on the Editorium, has a Delete Unused Styles macro that's very helpful for getting rid of the detritus in a Word doc or template so that the Word doc you're importing into Frame with your File-Import command only has the limited set of styles that you want and need. RE: Structured Frame Reference Guides
Hi Tim, Can't help you with any books, but there are two possible solutions for problem, depending on the situation or type of elements (inline or container) (Note: using the EDD element names in bold below) 1. Use ParagraphFormatting/PropertiesPagination/Placement/RunInHead. You have to also specify the DefaultPunctuation, which can be set to a space 2. Use TextRangeFormatting instead of ParagraphFormatting. This is normally done for inline elements, but you could force a container element to become inline this way. HTH! Re: Change declaration when converting FM with MIF2GO

My problem is two-fold: 1) MIF2GO does not seem to pick up any change I make to this declaration (other changes in the .ini do). We'd have to see a test case to determine why it is not working for you. That means a short (one page) doc, with the .fm, .mif (very important), .inis, .prj, and all output files including the log file, all in one .zip. 2) If it would work what's the change I need to make to have the following resulting declaration: concept xmlns:xsa3=http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/; xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; id=id xml:lang=en-us xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=../../catalog/concept.xsd You wouldn't use the settings above for that; this is the root element, not the doctype declaration. You would use: [DITATopicRootAttrs] ; Frame para format for topic title (wildcards OK) = attributes for ; the root element of the current topic. It can be overridden by a ; DITATopicRootAttr marker. If your starting Frame format were conhead, you'd use: conhead=xmlns:xsa3=http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/; xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=../../catalog/concept.xsd except you'd have to have it all on one line (not possible in this post).
For example, for DITA version 1.1 and topic type concept: [HTMLOptions] HTMLDocType="-//OASIS//DTD DITA 1.1 Concept//EN" HTMLDTD="docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.1/CS01/dtd/concept.dtd" If you need the declaration to comply with the requirements of third-party tools, you can override the default values. For XMetaL, for example: [HTMLOptions] HTMLDocType="-//OASIS//DTD DITA Composite//EN" HTMLDTD="ditabase.dtd" My problem is two-fold: 1) MIF2GO does not seem to pick up any change I make to this declaration (other changes in the .ini do). 2) If it would work what's the change I need to make to have the following resulting declaration: http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/; xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; id="id" xml:lang="en-us" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="../../catalog/concept.xsd"> Thanks for your help! Hi Tim: I think that using a paragraph element inherently determines that you have to have a paragraph break. Perhaps you really want a text range element? FM 10 and Win 7 -- any "gotchas"/problems?
I am running (unstructured) FM10 on Win7 with a single FM10 issue: My current machine is a 64-bit Win7 at work and a 32-bit Win7 at home. I work on all files on both machines with almost no problems. The problem I had was converting an 86-chapter book to OmniHelp using Mif2Go. It turns out there are new Mif2Go files for FM10. Structured Frame Reference Guides
Fei Min is correct. I've found that the Structure Development Guide that is in the Online Manuals folder in FrameMaker 7 is invaluable. Paragraph styles will always have a paragraph break in them. Text range (which will translate to a Character style) doesn't require a para break. Converting Word doc to Frame.
Second that. And to further elaborate: On Page 5 of that document, Tim Murray notes, "Frame could care less if a heading is named Heading 1 or Fred_Flintstone, so you don't really have to mess with Word's style names before the conversion unless you want to change the style names to match the target template." When I've used Tim's document, I did exactly that: I defined styles in Word that matched what I had and wanted in the Frame template. The problem is that FM 10 broke back compatibility for MIF generation. Again. So for FM 10, you need the latest files, which are not part of the demo version yet; links to them are provided in the download instructions sent to new registered users. We'll be adding that to the demo in the next release. There is no problem at all with Win 7, except that you need to install the files that used to go into \windows\system32 to \windows\syswow64 instead for the 64-bit version. That info is on the Web site right under the download links. -- Jeremy H. Griffith, at Omni Systems Inc. http://www.omsys.com/

HTH!
