FrameMaker and meta-documents

2006-07-20 Thread Steve Rickaby
Dear Framers

I'm researching an article on the use of FrameMaker for creating
meta-documents, that is, documents built using various populations of text
and/or graphic insets. As this is not something I've actually done myself 'in
anger', only played with, I'd appreciate any experiences, pitfalls etc. that
anyone would like to share.

I've identified the following possible options/levels of variant organization:

* Conditional text insets into anchored frames on master pages can be used to
switch page backgrounds, ornaments, etc. I have set up a test and verified that
this works, but I'd be interested to hear whether anyone has made use of this
method, and if so, for what.

* Conditional text insets into body pages can create variant documents based on
standard inset files.

* Unconditional text insets into documents can create different document
versions based on standard inset files (the 'standard' modular document
approach?).

* Multiple book files can create different book versions based on standard
and/or variant documents.

Are there others?

I will also mention the use of ur-books to collect all inset files for
spell-checking, searching and so on.

Thanks.

Frreewheel.exe (it's a free s/w) that allows the mousewheel to work on such

Both the formats to be selected in the TOC setup and the formats actually

RE: How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup Table of ContentsInclude Paragraphs Tagged

2006-07-20 Thread eric . dunn
Have to say I'm intrigued as to what possible purpose a TOC of a TOC would
serve.

But, the only way to automatically set-up a generated file would be to use
FrameScript.

Or

Have a book set up with a TOC and other generated files as you want them,
then use that book template to build new books.

- Copy the template book, and associated generated files templates to a
new location.
- Open template book.
- Save book with the new desired name.
- Profit from a fully set-up book.

You could even have placeholder book components set up correctly. Rename
the placeholder components in the book to match the real files when
building a new book.

RE: How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup TableofContentsInclude Paragraphs Tagged

2006-07-20 Thread Ridder, Fred
The TOC and all other generated files are generated by the book,
so it is perfectly logical that the setup of what paragraphs to extract
is stored as part of the *book* file rather than the generated file
itself. How else would you be able to do the initial generation of a
generated file when you're not using a template file? What gets
stored in the TOC file is the *formatting* of the TOC entries, which
is exactly what you'd expect to find in a TOC template. It all makes
sense if you think about it. The content of the TOC is generated/
updated by the book, so the book controls how the content gets
generated. The TOC file simply contains and formats the generated
content.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Joe,

We are converting a bunch of books from one template to another. We
don't
want to manually specify the paragraphs formats that are included in the
TOC
for each book by moving them around in the Set Up Table of Contents
dialog.
This information is *not* pulled in by importing styles from a template.
As
far as we've seen, Karen's method is the only one that works.

Sorta defeats the purpose of a TOC template.

'Scuse me, but where did you get the notion that these fonts are in the
public domain?

My Helvetica and Times Roman families of fonts came from Adobe, cost
money, and are copyrighted. I've forgotten most of what I knew about
UNIX font issues back when I worked in Interleaf on Suns, but I'm pretty
certain we bought fonts from Adobe, Linotype, etc., back then, too.

My suggestion: Verify from which font foundry (or licensed vendor) the
fonts being used in UNIX came, and *buy* those _same_ fonts from the
_same_ source. If the UNIX system is using some bastardized fonts (they
came free with this open-source clone of...), get them to buy
legitimate versions from a legitimate foundry/vendor (Adobe, Linotype,
Bitstream) for both platforms.

[Actually, you don't buy fonts -- you buy licenses to use them. A single
license may permit use on multiple computers, so look into whether your
client's licenses already permit them to provide you with the fonts.]

Second-best option: Buy legitimate versions for your Windows system.
Then study the font-mapping portion of Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf
and the fonts section of maker.ini, and map the fonts used on the UNIX
system to your equivalents. Be aware that differences in font metrics
may cause line break and pagination changes.

Paula,
She should be able to move the window by dragging the title bar. Might
she have inadvertently shortened the Structure View to the point where all
that's left is the title bar? In case of difficulty, remember it is always
possible to resize or reposition the Structure View by exiting from

(Note: I'm assuming this is Windows.) Only a close button? There should
be a window menu button on the left, and clicking it should display a
menu with Move, Size, and Close commands -- is that not there?

Try the keyboard:

1) Click the Structure View title bar to give it focus.
2) Press Alt+spacebar to open the window menu, and then press the s
key to select Size.
3) Press the up arrow repeatedly. You should see the title bar move
upward as the window grows bigger.
4) When you're done, press Enter.

Thanks.

Here is a selection of on-line font foundries:

Be aware, though, that cross-platform font work is a total minefield:

. Different flavors of the 'same' font can use different internal names for
fonts, for example the many different versions of common fonts such as Arial
and Garamond.

. The 'same' font from different vendors can use different internal names for
fonts, for example Monotype Frutiger vs. Linitype Frutiger.

. Even the 'same' font from the same supplier but for different platforms can
also use differing names.

This can result is situations in which FrameMaker gives 'missing font' messages
no matter what you do. It's a mess.

I have read here and elsewhere that sticking to the OpenType format resolves
some of these issues, but I've not tried this myself.

Both the formats to be selected in the TOC setup and the formats actually
selected are part of the Book component. They are not part of the TOC
file. So naturally, until you update a book for the first time to gather
the list of all formats, there is nothing to select. And, if you copy a
TOC from elsewhere, there are no formats selected.

How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup Table of Contents"Include Paragraphs Tagged"

2006-07-20 Thread eric.d...@ca.transport.bombardier.com
Have to say I'm intrigued as to what possible purpose a TOC of a TOC would
serve.

But, the only way to automatically set-up a generated file would be to use
FrameScript.

Or

Have a book set up with a TOC and other generated files as you want them,
then use that "book template" to build new books.

- Copy the template book, and associated generated files templates to a
new location.
- Open template book.
- Save book with the new desired name.
- Profit from a fully set-up book.

You could even have "placeholder" book components set up correctly. Rename
the placeholder components in the book to match the "real" files when
building a new book.

As I pointed out in my post to John, your guess is wrong. Nothing is
stripped from a TOC file if it is renamed and included in a new book file.
The TOC set-up is part of the book component properties.

When generating a file, Frame for each generated file:
1 - looks for a correctly named file.
2 - If not found, creates a new empty file based on the first
non-generated file in the book. Will also a reference with the required
definitions.
3 - If found, opens the file and strips out all paragraphs with formats
with suffixes matching the generated file (*TOC, *IOM, *LOT, *LOF).
4 - Based on the list of paragraphs or elements in the book component,
Frame then builds the generated file.

Note: Number 3 above makes for interesting observations. The new generated
content is created in the same place as the deleted paragraphs. I'm not
sure if it is the location of the first of the last deleted paragraph that
determines the start point for the generated content, but you can have
generated files with standard text at the beginning and end which frame
will always leave alone when generating the file.

How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup TableofContents"Include Paragraphs Tagged"

Increasing Number of Files Listed in File Menu

2006-07-20 Thread Steven Mays
Hello

FM 6.0, Windows

Is there a way to increase the number of files that are listed in the file
menu?

I know that the names of these files are stored in the Maker.ini file
(RecentlyVisitedFiles). I tried entering a bank 5= and 6= in this section of
the .ini file, but this did not work.

Any ideas?

Thanks

How do I get TOC styles to appear in Setup Table of Contents"Include Paragraphs Tagged"

Guys...guys...it was a mis-statement. Instead of saying xxTOC styles,
I should have said styles that were used to make the TOC.

The rest of the qestion stands, and in fact, my co-worker, using a
variantion on Karen's instruction, was able to do exactly what we
needed.

Thanks, Karen :-)

I'll try to get him to writeup how he did it sometime next
week...we're both in training clases today and tomorrow, then he
heads bck to Chicago.

Not those pesky fonts...

'Scuse me, but where did you get the notion that these fonts are "in the
public domain"?

If the UNIX system is using some bastardized fonts ("they
came free with this open-source clone of..."), get them to buy
legitimate versions from a legitimate foundry/vendor (Adobe, Linotype,
Bitstream) for both platforms.

Trying to bring up the Structure View in Frame, but only the Structure View title bar shows up, nothing else

2006-07-20 Thread Gorelick, Paula
Hi,

We're using Structured FrameMaker 7.2 plus Sourcerer 1.1.

A co-worker is trying to edit a document and clicks the "Display the
Structure View" button. What she gets is the main Document window on
top, and below it the Structure View title bar with a close button (and
that's all). She can't select and drag the Structure view up to expand
it.

Does anyone know why it's behaving like this?

Paula

Paula,
She should be able to move the window by dragging the title bar. Might
she have inadvertently shortened the Structure View to the point where all
that's left is the title bar? In case of difficulty, remember it is always
possible to resize or reposition the Structure View by exiting from
FrameMaker and then editing the Structure View information in the maker.ini
file.

(Note: I'm assuming this is Windows.) Only a close button? There should
be a window menu button on the left, and clicking it should display a
menu with Move, Size, and Close commands -- is that not there?

Try the keyboard:

1) Click the Structure View title bar to give it focus.
2) Press Alt+ to open the window menu, and then press the s
key to select Size.
3) Press the up arrow repeatedly. You should see the title bar move
upward as the window grows bigger.
4) When you're done, press Enter.
