Help Needed Linking by Reference from SourceSafe

2006-12-11 Thread Roger Bell
Hello everyone. I seldom post here but read the digests with great
interest. So, now I have a question.

Is there a way to keep a folder of graphic files in SourceSafe checked
in and import them by reference into FrameMaker? Our goal is for all of
our writers to share the same graphics files and when one writer had to
update the file, it would update for each of us.

We are using MS Visual SourceSafe 6.0 and FrameMaker 7.2. We have tried
to research this issue on the Internet and found nothing, so I though
someone on this group may be doing this now if it is possible at all.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

RE: Help Needed Linking by Reference from SourceSafe

2006-12-11 Thread Mark Southee
Hi Roger,

We are on the same set up here (until we move to a DITA based CMS
solution). I'm afraid you can't get SourceSafe to work in the way you
want, due to the locks it puts on files that are checked out. As only
one person can have binary files checked out to their local drives at
any one time, other users would have to wait until they have they have
been checked in, then check them out themselves.

SourceSafe can handle multiple checkouts on ASCII files, but binary
files like graphic and Framemaker files are a no go I'm afraid.

Cheers

Mark

RE: Help Needed Linking by Reference from SourceSafe

2006-12-11 Thread Charles Beck
Hi Roger,

We, too, are using a similar setup. As Mark points out, only one writer
can have a file checked out at a time. However, we (sort of) get around
this limitation by using VSS to keep a local copy of files on our own
machines. That way, we can set up our import references with the
appropriate relative paths and view the graphics in working files. To
make sure we are looking at the most current version, we try to let each
other know when we update graphics, and we also do a Get Latest
Version copy action periodically.

Not perfect, but it works for us.

Chuck

Structured FM Roundtripping

2006-12-11 Thread Lofthouse Marsha-PT1816
I'm working on converting some files that were created with DTD A to
DTD B. I have **almost** everything working. The XML files were not
originally created with FrameMaker.

I can now open them in FrameMaker with no errors and the structure is
exactly as I defined it. However, when I save the XML file, my TCaption
element disappears.

Definitions:
!ELEMENT tgroup (TCaption?, THead?, TBody, TFooter?)

!ELEMENT TCaption (#PCDATA | Emphasis | lots of other stuff)*
!ATTLIST TCaption Target ID #REQUIRED

The TCaption element (and it's contents) is there when I open the file.
There are no errors showing in the Structure View.

When I save the XML file from FrameMaker, I get an error indicating an
ID attribute was referenced but never declared. That is because the ID
attribute in question is declared in TCaption.

I've been staring at this way too long today.

If you need more information, let me know.

Thanks in advance for any clues you might be able to give me.

renaming styles at the book level

2006-12-11 Thread Jon Harvey
FM 7.2 for window

Hi all,

I've been looking for a way to rename styles at the book level. After going
through FM's online help, it seems like I need to go through each book file one
at a time. I'd rather find a more convenient way. Is there one? I don't need to
modify the styles I have, just rename them (I'll spare you the reasons why this
is so).

External xrefs from FM to... CHM or HTML

2006-12-11 Thread Nantel, Elise

Hi Framers,

We just converted an SDK project from Robohelp to FM/ePublisher because of
Robohelp being discontinued. This project contains two sections: a Programmer
Guide with overviews, descriptions, and sample code, and a Reference Guide that
is automatically generated by extracting comments in the actual C# code. The
final product was two CHM files.

The tool used to generate the Reference Guide is NDoc and is part of the .NET
Framework. The available output formats are HTML and HTML Help only (no XML or
PDF).

When in Robohelp, I merged the Reference Guide CHM file into the Programmer
Guide, and was able to do external cross-references from the Programmer Guide
to the Reference Guide (typically on class or interface names). However, now in
FrameMaker, how can I do that? From what I see, I can only do xrefs to another
FM document.

Are there plug-ins available? Or new tools to use?

Please answer me directly since I'm on the digest.

I'm using FM 7.0 on Windows XP.

Thanks a lot.
