Text not flowing entire width of text box

2010-05-12 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
I am working on a FM template that has master pages with single column text
boxes that are 45 picas wide.

I am finding that my tagged text is not flowing to the entire length of the
text box. It is flowing in at a maximum line width of 42 picas, then bumping to
the next line. I do not have indents set in this tag. When I attempt to
manually type additional text in the text box, it is bumping to the next line
when it reaches 42 picas in length.

What setting do I need to adjust so that the text will flow to the 45 pica
width of the text box?

Framemaker and the web

2010-05-12 Thread Scott White
I got a list of questions from a client about Framemaker and its ability to
work with the web. I am not familiar with this but I thought I would ask the
experts out here if any of this is possible:

Good morning! We are looking at options to add the print catalog when it is
ready to our existing website. A couple of technical questions came out of our
meeting this morning that I didn’t know how to answer.

1) Is there a Framemaker page to Flash option?
2) Is there a way to embed a hyperlink on the Item Number so that we have
active link from the Item Number to hook into our ordering system?
3) Do you know how Framemaker incorporates with Adobe Scene 7?

Any help appreciated.

Re: Framemaker and the web

2010-05-12 Thread Baruch Brodersen
1) There are PDF to SWF converters utilities out there (Google PDF to SWF).
Your workflow would entail FrameMaker PDF SWF. I would experiment, get
the kinks worked out and then have Rick write me a script to automate it.

2) Maybe. You could for instance use a hypertext marker or PS code (better
to use Shlomo's TimeSavers shortcuts in either event, imo) to link to a
ColdFusion or some other dynamic page, as a trigger to launch and hook into
the program.

3) Among other digital assets, Scene 7 can utilize PDF, postscript, and XML,
all of which are common workflow output of FrameMaker.

RE: Text not flowing entire width of text box

2010-05-12 Thread Fred Ridder

One thing to check is the setting of the DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics option in
your maker.ini file. If that option is set to Off, FrameMaker will optimize the
displayed text for readability even if this results in slightly incorrect line
lengths. If the option is set to On, the displayed line lengths will be
correct, but some of the individual glyphs may be slightly distorted to make
the spacing come out right.

And remember that you have two maker.ini files that both come into play. The
defualt settings are in the maker.ini file that is located in the application
installation file (typically C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\FrameMakerX, where X is the
major version number). A second maker.ini that contains your personalized
preferences, recent file list, etc. is located in
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\X.0

This personal maker.ini is much smaller than the default one, and all the items
in it are either supplementary (i.e. not in the default maker.ini) or are
overrides of the default maker.ini settings.

At Tammy's request, complete instructions!

These are for Windows XP, SP3. If Windows 7 is much different, maybe someone
can revise these.

To permanently turn off the Rely on System Fonts Only; Do Not Use Document
Fonts setting

1. From the Start menu, choose Printers and Faxes.

2. In the Printers and Faxes window, right-click the Adobe PDF printer and
choose Properties.

3. In the Adobe PDF Properties dialog, choose Printing Preferences.

4. In the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences dialog, clear the Rely On System Fonts
Only check box.

5. Click OK.

6. In the Adobe PDF Properties dialog, click the Advanced tab.

7. Click Printing Defaults.

8. On the Adobe PDF Settings tab, clear the Rely On System Fonts Only check box.

9. Click OK, then click OK again.

Simple and obvious, right? /sarcasm

Wow, I had no idea I had to change it in TWO places. It's bad enough
that it seems to reset every time Adobe does an automatic update.
Here are the instructions for doing this in Windows 7:

1. Click Start--Devices and Printers (can also be accessed from the

10. Select the Adobe PDF Settings tab.
11. Clear the box preceding Rely on system fonts only; do not use

RE: Rely on system fonts only

2010-05-12 Thread Spectrum Writing
Thanks all. And yes, it was confirmed by Adobe that every time Adobe does an
automagic update, your settings are wiped out and you must reset. Sigh.

Still, the BIGGER issue is that I use ONLY Arial and Times New Roman Fonts
in all my documents - system fonts! I do not use embedded fonts in my
documents. It's ONLY on Win 7/64 bit that this setting becomes an issue.
Slap these files onto a Win XP SP3/32 bit system and the setting does not
become an issue.

As I have said before, this is a non-reproducible situation from system to
system - Two very savvy FM sources from the list have the same issue for all
documents on their Win7/64 bit system, another source has said that it's an
issue for only some of his documents, and yet another never has the issue.

I just saw the same issue be potshot at a client site well - some users had
the issue, some didn't, etc. It would be nice if Adobe would acknowledge
this issue and try to resolve it.

Thanks again all! This list is the best.

Dear Scott,

1) Why Flash? PDF allows to link to any place and call programs etc.
Active links in PDF are prepared in FrameMaker as Hypertext Markers.
Save As PDF works well in nearly all cases - if not, Printing to
Adobe Printer and then distilling the PS file does the job also.

2) A Hyperlink Marker can be placed in any paragraph at any location
(e.g. in front of an item number). The item with the link should bear
a character format to create an active area.

3) I have no idea what Scene 7 is at all.

I got a list of questions from a client about Framemaker and its ability to
work with the web. I am not familiar with this but I thought I would ask the

"Good morning! We are looking at options to add the print catalog when it is
ready to our existing website. A couple of technical questions came out of our
meeting this morning that I didn?t know how to answer.

1) Is there a Framemaker page to Flash option?
2) Is there a way to embed a hyperlink on the Item Number so that we have

Any help appreciated.

Framemaker and the web

2010-05-12 Thread Baruch Brodersen
1) There are PDF to SWF converters utilities out there (Google PDF to SWF).
Your workflow would entail FrameMaker > PDF > SWF.

Text not flowing entire width of text box

A second maker.ini that contains your personalized
preferences, recent file list, etc. is located in
C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\X.0

This personal maker.ini is much smaller than the default one, and all the items
in it are either supplementary (i.e. not in the default maker.ini) or are
overrides of the default maker.ini settings.

Rely on system fonts only

2010-05-12 Thread Jenny Greenleaf

Wow, I had no idea I had to change it in TWO places. It's bad enough
that it seems to reset every time Adobe does an automatic update.
Here are the instructions for doing this in Windows 7:

1. Click Start-->Devices and Printers (can also be accessed from the
Control Panel).
2. Right-click the Adobe PDF icon.
3. Select Printing Preferences.
4. Select the Adobe PDF Settings tab.
5. Clear the box preceding "Rely on system fonts only; do not use
document fonts. Click OK.

6. Right-click the Adobe PDF icon again.
7. Select Printer Properties.
8. Select the Advanced tab.
9. Click the Printing Defaults... button at the bottom.
10. Select the Adobe PDF Settings tab.
11. Clear the box preceding "Rely on system fonts only; do not use
document fonts. Click OK twice.

12. Repeat when Adobe next does an automatic update.

Rely on system fonts only
