RE: FrameMaker 10

2011-04-01 Thread Anthony Davey
Hi Art,

Unfortunately, perhaps, my Print to File checkbox is, by default, unchecked;
and the default output is still a .prn file.

My other default setting, which is a complete PITA here in England, is that the
default paper size on my Adobe PDF printer is Letter. PLEASE, can anybody tell
me how to set it to A4?

Best regards,
Ant

Anthony,

If you uncheck the Print To File checkbox on the Frame print dialog
box, Distiller automatically distills the PS file for you. Makes it a
one-step process instead of several.

2011-04-01 Thread Anne Duffield
Sue,

I have found:

1. When adding tab stops in the paragraph designer the Auto-Show must be
selected. If Auto-Collapse is selected the tab stops won’t save.

2. When compiling the TOC the heading 3 is missing a closing angle
bracket after $paratext [Tab]$pagenum should be $paratext
[Tab]$pagenum. Without the bracket, the code appears in the TOC rather than
the heading 3’s.

Table formats - not setting properly

2011-04-01 Thread Theresa de Valence
I'm trying to set a Table format where the first column has no ruling at
all (really, they're just the labels for the other columns), but I don't
seem to be able to make this happen. If I try and create custom ruling,
then it remvoes ruling from all the other column/cells in the table.

Is there something I'm not understanding correctly?

RE: Relative Path for Images Changed to Absolute

2011-04-01 Thread Wei Jiang (PT_CN)
Dear Alison,

I had met similar problems 10 years ago, when I started translating and
typesetting FM documents. There was/is not a short-cut solution to the
problems. But the lessons that I learned are:

1. Never change the relative path info in the FM files. Be careful of
your fingers when you are prompted to locate the missing images, say when
you need to re-save FM documents into MIF, to be processed by a CAT tool.
Just consistently ignore and never redirect! Actually there are
tools/scripts out there which can automatically re-save every FM in a book,
or in a folder (and its subfolders) while keeping the original linking info
intact.

2. Just in case that the path info has been changed, say from relative
paths to absolute paths, which is your case, I am sure you can still change
them back, in a dirty, quick way. First, you need to save all FM files into
MIF. Then you can use a search-and-replace tool that supports
wildcards/regular expressions, such as the legendary UltraEditor - just
replace the c:\folder\subfolers\ stuff with ..\..\ - of course the
strings look differently in the MIF, but this is a just a quick example. And
finally, you resave all MIF's back to FM's. Actually, I have been thinking
about creating a tool to streamline this whole process, though I personally
do not need it, as I had learned my lesson, and I have had my associates
learn it too.

But, before you try the above, you must ensure that the path info in our FM
files have REALLY been changed. Actually, if the files are saved in the
root directory of your disk, say c:\, then when opening them, FrameMaker
may try locating the linked image files in c:\, not in their relative
path. So, I would suggest that you copy your FM files into a folder that is
deep enough, and see if FrameMaker will suggest relative paths when
opening them.

Unstructured

OS: Windows 7, 64 bit (brand new machine)

After several problems, I've finally received a set of newly translated
Simplified Chinese files back from the (new to me) LSP. Due to budgetary
consideration, I always perform final DTP on the book before I publish to
PDF.

My problem is that every single image (all imported by reference) has had
the relative path changed to an absolute path and I have to re-link every
one of them when I open each file (some files have hundreds of images as I
use icons in instructions to match the proprietary console on our ultrasound
machines).

In a perfect world I would return this to the LSP and have them fix it, but
these manuals are already behind schedule. I have searched the last 2 years
of list posting and cannot find the specific answer I am looking for.

Is there someplace I can change the absolute path back to the relative path?
Even if I have to make the change once for every file in the book that would
still only be 5 minutes work instead of hours and hours of work.

FYI: I will be working with the LSP to ensure this problem doesn't happen
again.

RE: FrameMaker 10

2011-04-01 Thread Simon BUCH
Ant - I seem to recall that the default paper sizes are stored in the
printer driver settings, and remember that Windows printer drivers have
3 locations where the 'default' is defined!

1. Select the Adobe PDF printer, then right mouse click and select
Properties
2. Click Printing Preferences button, and the Adobe PDF printing
preferences will appear
3. Modify the settings and click OK
4. Click the Advanced tab, then Printing defaults button. The 'Adobe
PDF Printing Defaults' dialog is shown.
5. Modify the settings and click OK
6. Click the device settings tab, and then select the Form to tray
assignment
7. Shutdown and reboot Windows [probably not required, but hey, it's
Windows]

I think we should petition Adobe so that if they decide to sell us 'UK
English' versions of the software, then the software should come
pre-defined with UK English default settings.

overriding table formats

2011-04-01 Thread Fred Wersan
Is there a way to force a table that has had all kinds of format
overruling to pick up the ruling properties of the table definition? I'm
using Frame 8 (structured).

I've tried changing to a different format and then changing back. I've
tried importing the table formats from another doc and saying to
override formats. I've tried creating an empty table and copying the
offending rows into it, but the new table, which looked fine when
created, picks up the ruling overrides.

Thanks.

Subject: Inter-file XREFs broken

FM 9 Version: 9.0p255
Unstructured
OS: Windows 7, 64 bit (brand new PITA machine)

When I received my translated book back from a new LSP (Simplified Chinese if
the language matters) all of the inter-file XREFs were broken.

I've never had this happen before with an LSP - although the occasional XREF
will be broken.

For whatever reason, the LSP had my FM9 files open in FM8. I know this is why
all my relative path image links were broken, but could this also account for
broken inter-file XREFs?

Additionally, is there something I can do to fix this without re-linking every
XREF - which is very tedious? After posting on the list yesterday, I used the
"save-as-MIF, search and replace, save back to FM" to fix 99% of the broken
relative path image links without affecting the Chinese. So I'm kind of hoping
someone has a similar suggestion for XREFs.

Alison

PS: I know the LSP should fix this - and we'll be talking about it - but I'm on
a massive deadline so the logical answer isn't necessarily the fastest.

FrameMaker 10

2011-04-01 Thread Simon BUCH
Ant - I seem to recall that the default paper sizes are stored in the
printer driver settings, and remember that Windows printer drivers have
3 locations where the 'default' is defined!

1. Select the Adobe PDF printer, then right mouse click and select
Properties
2. Click Printing Preferences button, and the Adobe PDF printing
preferences will appear
3. Modify the settings and click OK
4. Click the Advanced tab, then "Printing defaults" button. The 'Adobe
PDF Printing Defaults' dialog is shown.
5. Modify the settings and click OK
6. Click the device settings tab, and then select the "Form to tray
assignment"
7. Shutdown and reboot Windows [probably not required, but hey, it's
Windows]

I think we should petition Adobe so that if they decide to sell us 'UK
English' versions of the software, then the software should come
pre-defined with UK English default settings.

Hi Art,

Unfortunately, perhaps, my Print to File checkbox is, by default,
unchecked; and the default output is still a .prn file.

My other default setting, which is a complete PITA here in England, is
that the default paper size on my Adobe PDF printer is Letter. PLEASE,
can anybody tell me how to set it to A4?

Best regards,
Ant

Relative Path for Images Changed to Absolute

First, you need to save all FM files into
MIF. Then you can use a search-and-replace tool that supports
wildcards/regular expressions, such as the legendary UltraEditor - just
replace the "c:\folder\subfolers\" stuff with "..\..\" - of course the
strings look differently in the MIF, but this is a just a quick example. And
finally, you resave all MIF's back to FM's. Actually, I have been thinking
about creating a tool to streamline this whole process, though I personally
do not need it, as I had learned my lesson, and I have had my associates
learn it too.

But, before you try the above, you must ensure that the path info in our FM
files have REALLY been changed. Actually, if the files are saved in the
root directory of your disk, say "c:\", then when opening them, FrameMaker
may try locating the linked image files in "c:\", not in their relative
path. So, I would suggest that you copy your FM files into a folder that is
"deep" enough, and see if FrameMaker will suggest relative paths when
opening them.

Kindest regards,

FYI: I will be working with the LSP to ensure this problem doesn't happen
again.
