Theresa, try to set 1st page side to "next available" if you want to avoid
empty pages.

Hi Thomas,

It might be a special master page, something like First or FirstRight. You
might have to open that master page and do the column changes there too.

files in book which end up with 2 pages

2011-04-15 Thread Theresa de Valence

xp
Frame 8
Book has 10+ different master pages, but they are mostly simple changes:
1 column page, 2 column page, different footers left & right, sometimes
a running header, sometimes not.

In Book, Pagination is not available.
From the Book file, for the first file in the book, pagination is set
to Double-sided, 1st Page Right, Delete empty pages before saving &
printing, Every other file is set to: Double-sided, 1st Page side: read
from file, delete empty pages.

For each file, separately from book, Format/Page Layout/Pagination is
set to Double-sided, 1st page Right (no option to follow from prior file)

I have two problems:
1. The second file in the book has one page. I have manually set that
page to Doublesided, 1st Page right, Delete Empty pages BUT every time I
generate the book, it ends up with 2 pages.

2. The second is that I have different L and R master page formats and
whether the first page is L or R depends upon what page # it is. I
thought I was setting these inputs correctly, but maybe not.

Any help?

Thanks,
Theresa

You'd need a phone home script installed with the Help. Many companies
block this type of unauthorized communication. Of course you could add

Your product installation engineer (or lead developer if you don't

Is the "Generate tagged PDF" option ON?
If yes, try disabling FMPDFReflow client in maker.ini and try again.
If No, some media file in the FM document (swf, U3D etc) might be the reason

Other than developing this system yourself, the only off-the-shelf
system I know of that does this is Adobe's AIR Help. Flare does offer a
"WebHelp AIR" output option .. not sure if they have hooked up the

possible to hack it to work).

RoboHelp's AIR Help offers this functionality out of the box, and you
can also home brew it by developing your own custom AIR Help. For more

Re: Changing a two-column index to one column

2011-04-15 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Thomas,

It might be a special master page, something like First or FirstRight. You
might have to open that master page and do the column changes there too.

Changing a two-column index to one column

2011-04-15 Thread Writer
Hold down the CTRL key and select the frame on that page. Right-click the
frame, and then choose Object Properties from the menu. You can change the
column settings on the Customize Text Frame dialog box that appears.

The History Window: An Unlucky Discovery

2011-04-15 Thread Dr. Rick Smith
In the wee hours of the morning, I was putting the finishing touches on a
30-page report that was slightly past due. I was literally on the final page,
when the "History" window unexpectedly popped up. Honestly, I didn't know that
Frame 9 had a history window. I was vaguely aware that it probably worked in
conjunction with "Undo" and that it probably behaved like "History" in
Photoshop - you could roll things back, and return them to normal to observe
the results of changes.

But I didn't really care because I wanted to finish my report. But for some
reason the History window interfered with my typing. It wasn't exactly covering
the text I wanted to change, but I couldn't enter text any more.

So I clicked on the "go away" icon in the window corner, expecting it to
disappear into the palette on the right. It didn't. I got annoyed and did some
more random clicking. After all, it was hours past bedtime, I was getting
drowsy, and I was ready to be finished.

This is always a recipe for disaster, but I didn't worry. I'm good at
periodically saving my work, and Frame's autosave has retrieved me from
disaster countless times before.

My random clicking seemed to upset Frame - it replied with the swirling circle,
which usually means "Go away, I'm rebuilding a book," or "I'm dead now." More
clicking brought up the ominous Windows alert: "Framemaker is not responding,
do you want to wait it out, look for help with the problem on-line, or take it
out of its misery?"

I thought briefly about aborting Frame - I'd lose the last 20 minutes' or so of
work, but I'd get going again. On the other hand, maybe this would all clear
itself up in another moment.

Sure enough, the swirling icon disappeared and Frame was back in control. I
quickly hit "Save" before it tried to crash again.

That was my big mistake.

My attempts to make the History window go away had apparently rolled back all
my edits since the last announcement of "We're discarding the history now."
This was apparently several hours earlier. All earlier saves and autosaves were
discarded - my most recent save had made the rollback permanent.

So today I'm reconstructing all that writing that seemed so brilliant last
night as I nodded closer and closer to the keyboard. And I've also been told
that the customer no longer "really" needs the report due to the results of a
meeting yesterday. At least I'll still get paid as long as I send them
something reasonable.

What I find especially weird is that last year I finished a seven-hundred page
manuscript using Frame 9 and never once encountered the HIstory window and its
tender mercies. Just lucky I guess.

Rick.

Frame 10 and Acrobat 8 Pro

2011-04-15 Thread Art Campbell
Gillian,

At the lowest level, Acrobat is seen as a printer by your computer. So
yes, you should be able to print to it and make PDFs. Frame largely
doesn't know or care what it prints to.

At a higher level, Frame interacts with the Acrobat program at a
number of levels. So I'd be surprised if SaveAs PDF worked, or if the
automatic setup to initiate reviews or to read comments back in from
PDFs would work without the newer versions of Acrobat being on the
system because those features were written into FM 10 assuming no
backwards compatibility with old versions of Acrobat, AFAIK. So if you
can get any of the advanced features that depend on inter-operability
between the programs to work, be surprised and happy, but don't depend
on it.

files in book which end up with 2 pages

Any help?

Thanks,
Theresa

Re: crash after saving PDF

Is the "Generate tagged PDF" option ON?
If yes, try disabling FMPDFReflow client in maker.ini and try again.
If No, some media file in the FM document (swf, U3D etc) might be the reason
for crash.
