RE: Convert A3 to A4 format

2013-04-25 Thread Heidi Bailey
Hi Rod,

I frequently have to change page size, as the project managers discuss options
for brochures, quick starts...

If you don't want to develop a different template, you could give the following
a bash (as suggested to me by my excellent partner):

1. Calculate the size of the text frames (including headers, footers and any on
custom master pages) that you want in the new files.

2. Change these text frames in your original document. Yes it looks weird, but
it saves lots of hassle after the page resize.

3. Save the file as MIF.

4. Open the MIF file in a text editor.

5. Search for PageSize, find the values that follow this string, and use
Search+Replace to change them to the size you want.

6. Save and close the MIF file.

7. Open the MIF file in FrameMaker, check that all the page sizes are okay and
that the text frames are where you want them.

8. Save as an FM file.

You can then use this file to import master page and page size to other files.

Hope that helps,
Heidi Bailey

Hi team,

I have a novel that I set up with several master pages for different files.

The majority of these have the following frames:

-Footer
-Three text boxes that flow to following pages
-A header column for each text column

I originally set it up as A3 because I thought there would otherwise not be
enough room for meaningful amount of text in each frame on each page.

I was wrong. Now I want to make it all A4.

When I select the files and try to change the page size to A4 it tells me
the column sizes will be all wrong - not entirely sure how to fix this
easily. Any clues?

Regards,
Rod Fee

The options for what to include in the TOC do not seem to include the file

Any way of doing this and including their page number automatically or is it
something I will have to manually produce and update?

Sounds like the HTML 5 layout is not compatible with WebHelp skins:

A screen layout has two key components, a set of screen layout pages
and a CSS. The screen layout pages define the content and the
structure. The CSS defines the layout and the skin.

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/robohelp/robohtml/WS1b49059a33f77726-5d8e23a513606e3bbe2-7ffe.html

Do you have a compelling reason to use the brand-new and probably not

Hi Dick,

Any modern version of FrameMaker should support jpegs; at least 7.2 and
higher. jpegs are suitable for printing photographs but are less than ideal
for line art, text, etc. Also, the jpeg format supports compression, so your
quality may depend on any compression settings that may have been applied to
the images. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank
you very much.

RE: jpg images

2013-04-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
As you have already seen the other messages, this is just an endorsement to
*avoid* JPEG for anything that contain pixels that are next to each other and
have sharp color transitions ... as happens with lines and drawings and text,
etc.

No matter what quality you save the JPG with such content, the results will
not be great. Basically, the transitions from one color to another at the edge
of such objects get speckled dots - sometimes more than a few pixels far from
the color transition - and also additional transition color pixels on both
sides of the color change locations.

These extra dots then show up in the printed output (if it is a high-quality
ink-jet or any color laser) and, depending on the colors, can be pretty
obviosu. The text and lines get smeared - the sharp transition between the text
color and the background color gets softened. In the worst case, narrow lines
disappear or get broken up pretty badly.

Bottom line: JPEG's are fine for pictures, but even there, using a high-quality
JPEG (from a non-lossy source image ideally) is important - repetitively
editing and saving the JPEG from image editor programs can increase the noise
in the JPEG over time.

2013-04-25 Thread Alison Craig
FM 9 Version: 9.0p255

OS: Windows 7, 64 bit

Is there a skip to next table command?

I'm using Silicon Prairie tools to check everything in my books for overrides
(tedious to say the least) and it would be so much simpler to check the tables
is there was a keyboard command to move from wherever in the current table to
the beginning of the first cell in the next table.

I checked the Frame 9 PDF and also Scriptorium's Unstructured Frame 8 book, but
no luck.

Any suggestions?

OT: Book Suggestion - Fonts

2013-04-25 Thread Alison Craig
This is off topic, but I wanted to share a book I just read.

As technical writers, many of you will be interested in fonts. Just my Type by
Simon Garfield is informative, interesting and sometimes very funny.

The hard cover version is about $20 dollars, but it's also available in
paperback and e-book (and no I don't know the author and I don't get anything
for the recommendation J).

Multiscreen HTML Output - making changes to the default Desktop output

2013-04-25 Thread Carol J. Elkins

There are several problems with the HTML5 layouts supplied with RH10:
~They are not consistently formatted across
mobile device layouts; a client wanting output
for all mobile devices will have to put up with
different color schemes, different branding,
etc. for each device he wants to output to.
~Adobe admits that they expected the RH10 user to
have their IT department modify the HTML5. Well,
we small and 1-person companies have no IT department.
~There is precious little documentation that
explains how to edit the HTML5 files. Vikram
Verma, the RoboHelp TCS product manager, promised
a Webinar but I don't believe it has happened yet.

You can download a brief procedure that Vikram
sent me in March at
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ip6x2whnpfb315m/How%20to%20Edit%20RoboHelp%20mobile%20layouts.pdf.
It might be helpful. I haven't tried it myself
because I honestly thought that when I purchased
RH10 I could do what I needed to do without
having to learn an entirely new profession of Web
design and HTML5 coding. Right now, I'll probably
hire someone to tweak the sample files to make an
entire set of mobile layouts with similar branding.

It could be done with a script (FrameScript or ExtendScript). For a file, you
could save it as MIF, open that in a text editor, and pull out the variable
definition entries. They look like this:

VariableFormat
  VariableName `Copyright Date'
  VariableDef `2011-2012'
  # end of VariableFormat

If for some reason, your book has different variables in different component
files, you could import the variables from each book file into a temporary
file, and then save the temp file as MIF.

It also sounds like a good enhancement idea for the already very handy EZVars
plugin (Electropubs.com).

Convert A3 to A4 format

When I select the files and try to change the page size to A4 it tells me
the column sizes will be all wrong - not entirely sure how to fix this
easily. Any clues?

Regards,
Rod Fee

You can use the XtraBookUtils plugin for this.

According to this page, the plugin is for Frame 5-7, but I've got it working in
Frame 9.

This will create a list of all the image file paths in a book, you can edit the
list to reflect the new paths, then the plugin will change the paths.

tip: you can use Find/Replace to replace all the paths.
1. select the second column in the table (column heading 'new reference'), and
set Find/Replace to Look in: Selection
2. when replacing a file path, you have to specify it as
directory//directory2//file.tif (the / is a control character in this dialog)

JPEG is a lossy bitmap format, so photos represent well, but diagrams and
screen shots will likely disappoint you.

2013-04-25 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Dick,

Any "modern" version of FrameMaker should support jpegs; at least 7.2 and
higher. jpegs are suitable for printing photographs but are less than ideal
for line art, text, etc. Also, the jpeg format supports compression, so your
quality may depend on any compression settings that may have been applied to
the images. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank
you very much.

2013-04-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
As you have already seen the other messages, this is just an endorsement to
*avoid* JPEG for anything that contain pixels that are next to each other and
have sharp color transitions ... as happens with lines and drawings and text,
etc.

No matter what "quality" you save the JPG with such content, the results will
not be great. Basically, the transitions from one color to another at the edge
of such objects get speckled dots - sometimes more than a few pixels far from
the color transition - and also additional "transition color" pixels on both
sides of the color change locations.

JPEG (from a non-lossy source image ideally) is important - repetitively
editing and saving the JPEG from image editor programs can increase the "noise"
in the JPEG over time.

To be more explicit, "JPEG's are fine for PHOTOGRAPHS."

To provide a helpful mnemonic, the "JPEG" file format (abbreviated to
"JPG" in earlier Microsoft OS) was developed by the Joint PHOTOGRAPHIC
Experts Group (JPEG !!) for the specific purpose of defining a digital
format optimized for "still images of PHOTOGRAPHIC quality." [emphasis

2013-04-25 Thread Alison Craig
FM 9 Version: 9.0p255
Unstructured
OS: Windows 7, 64 bit

Is there a "skip to next table" command?

I'm using Silicon Prairie tools to check everything in my books for overrides
(tedious to say the least) and it would be so much simpler to check the tables
is there was a keyboard command to move from "wherever" in the current table to
the beginning of the first cell in the next table.

I checked the Frame 9 PDF and also Scriptorium's Unstructured Frame 8 book, but
no luck.

Any suggestions?

This is off topic, but I wanted to share a book I just read.

As technical writers, many of you will be interested in fonts. Just my Type by
Simon Garfield is informative, interesting and sometimes very funny.

The hard cover version is about $20 dollars, but it's also available in
paperback and e-book (and no I don't know the author and I don't get anything
for the recommendation J).

I got that advice off-list ? and it works, except there is the extra step of

It would be nicer if there was just a command to go to the beginning of the

Multiscreen HTML Output - making changes to the default Desktop output

2013-04-25 Thread Carol J. Elkins
There are several problems with the HTML5 layouts supplied with RH10:
~They are not consistently formatted across
mobile device layouts; a client wanting output
for all mobile devices will have to put up with
different color schemes, different "branding,"
etc. for each device he wants to output to.
~Adobe admits that they expected the RH10 user to
have their IT department modify the HTML5. Well,
we small and 1-person companies have no IT department.
~There is precious little documentation that
explains how to edit the HTML5 files. Vikram
Verma, the RoboHelp TCS product manager, promised
a Webinar but I don't believe it has happened yet.

You can download a brief procedure that Vikram
sent me in March at
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ip6x2whnpfb315m/How%20to%20Edit%20RoboHelp%20mobile%20layouts.pdf.

It might be helpful. I haven't tried it myself
because I honestly thought that when I purchased
RH10 I could do what I needed to do without
having to learn an entirely new profession of Web
design and HTML5 coding. Right now, I'll probably
hire someone to tweak the sample files to make an
entire set of mobile layouts with similar branding.

2013-04-25 Thread Robert Lauriston
No, HTML 5 doesn't seem close to ready for prime time to me, at least
if you have a lot of users on MSIE.

Plus after evaluating RoboHelp 10 I decided to switch to WebWorks
ePublisher. Though I'm not going to use its HTML5 output any time
soon, either.

JPEG with the highest quality setting is fine for most screen shots,
though I usually see smaller files from PNG or GIF.

Generated list of variables

2013-04-25 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
Is there a way to generate a list of variables used in a book?
I don't see anything in the native functionality.

And a butter knife works fine as a screwdriver if the blade fits the slot well.
But it's not what you should use if a screwdriver is available. :-)

It could be done with a script (FrameScript or ExtendScript). For a file, you
could save it as MIF, open that in a text editor, and pull out the variable
definition entries. They look like this:

 > # end of VariableFormat

If for some reason, your book has different variables in different component
files, you could import the variables from each book file into a temporary
file, and then save the temp file as MIF.

It also sounds like a good enhancement idea for the already very handy EZVars
plugin (Electropubs.com).

Should have said: "from each file in the book"
