Re: Change workflow to use FM and RH together?

2013-08-08 Thread Anjaneai S
Hi Terri,

Here is an idea/steps how you can achieve this--

Firstly, if there is a scope for content within Framemaker to be updated at
various stages, go for Link option for bringing in book/documents from
Framemaker (for Both UK & US English) to RoboHelp. *(File-- Link--
Framemaker documents)*

*1#* One way is after linking your documents and converting all your
FrameMaker documents into topics within Robohelp. Create 2 Conditional
Built tag an apply them on US and UK English separately from Project
manager and while generating your output, Select the CBT for which you want
to generate the help.
Alternately, you can apply Conditional Text to your English US/UK Content
within Framemaker and directly publish it from there (File -- Publish). You
might require to create two different TOC for English US/UK content

*2# *Yes, you can create Help using FM Files, that is a standard workflow.
But the opposite is not a feasible solution.

I did not understand when you say -- " One issue that is *always* raised is
that the docs have pictures/screenshots/images and the help doesn't." The
Help file can also have graphics.

As you have been working on Fm for quite some time, I'll share some steps
to implement this from Rh End:--

1) Create (or Open Existing) Robohelp project
2) Go to File-- Link--FrameMaker document and browse- your FM (US) Book and
select open. (Repeat the same for English UK book)
3) This would Link your Book under Project Manager
4) Make a right click to Book and Select Generate (You should repeat this
step whenever there is any modification at Framemaker's end
5) Now create and apply the CBT (UK and US) to your Topics within Project
Manager (Drag and Drop them over any topic to apply it)
6) Generate your Help, say Webhelp, under Webhelp properties, Exclude the
UK CBT from output.

I hope I have not confused you further. :)

Thanks,
Anjaneai

Chapter numbers

2013-08-08 Thread Alastair Dent
I have a template (taken from a book) that has a master page with a chapter
number style defined - it's used on the header.

This works fine in the original book.

When I create a new book and new fm documents in that book, the chapter numbers
don't update.

Why could this be?

Windows 7 + FrameMaker 11 = BOOM!

2013-08-08 Thread Ken Poshedly
Due to the addition of 2 new contract writers and the replacement of the hard
drive in an existing terminal in my department, we're now stuck with Windows 7
and
FrameMaker 11 on those three platforms for the past month or so.

And
it's been nothing but problems ever since, with unpredictable crashes on the
desktop computers used by the two contract writers, even though all three
FM 11 platforms have all the Adobe patches.

One thing which does seem consistent is that FM11 does not seem to work well
with files located on our network server, yet that is really the method here.
Symptoms may include _extremely_ long times to open, save and close files and
MAY include the abovementioned FrameMaker crashes, though we have not yet
confirmed that.

The "fix" is for the contract writers to copy files from our 4-terrabyte
network drive onto external hard drives cabled to their terminals and for my
coworker to copy files directly onto his computer's internal hard drive; then
copy the revised file back into place in its location on the network drive.

The two contract writer desktop computers have ridiculously internal small hard
drives. (One is 29 megabytes and the other is 185 megabytes I've been told.)

Me? I'm happy as a
clam with Windows XP and FrameMaker 8 working across the network with no FM
crashes or other problems -- though I do have to suffer through the long times
to open, save and close files because we now must embed all our graphics
instead of referencing them. (I've boohoo'd about that here in the past, so
I'll not repeat the faulty reasoning for it once again.)

But doom is in my
future, as all four of us are soon to get new platforms with Windows 7
and FM 11.

This I really dread.

Who else out there is having what seems to be incompatibility problems with
platforms equipped with FM 11 and Windows 7 and how have you gotten around
those problems?

Off-list accounts, etc, are fine.

Tech Doc Review Cycle Software

2013-08-08 Thread Alison Craig

Does anyone know of any Review Cycle Software that works well for technical
documentation teams?

I've done a little searching on the web and systems for specific writing tools
or environments pop up (eg, Confluence, Inmedius S1000D, etc), but no generic
(and hopefully customizable) software packages.

Any suggestions?

Is there a "skip to next table" command?

I'm using Silicon Prairie tools to check everything in my books for overrides

is there was a keyboard command to move from "wherever" in the current table to

I checked the Frame 9 PDF and also Scriptorium's Unstructured Frame 8 book, but
no luck.

Joseph, I've bneen using Frame11 here on Windows 7 (64 bit) here for a couple
of weeks now, and it has crashed 3 or 4 times so far.
(Seemed to be when I was working with EPS's and graphics frames - but hard to
say really - one time I just looked at it funny and it crashed).
I did send the crash log files to fmer...@adobe.com and once I just put
"ARRGH!" in the mail as the cause (as it was the second time it had
crashed that afternoon!) and to my amusement a nice gentleman from Adobe did
email me back asking if he could help lol

Hi all,

I have been using FM 10 for about 2 years. It seems like FrameMaker will
randomly crash at least once a day on me. And I do mean crash --- get the
infamous fatal exception dialog box and then FrameMaker goes kaput. In response
to the inevitable debug questions:

-yes i have done a mif wash
-no this doesn't happen with a particular book or framemaker file. It happens
randomly no matter what book or file i am in and i have over 3,000 pages of
documentation.
-yes, these files have existed since FM 9 -- not sure why that version should
make a difference -there is no conditional text in any of the files. I do use
text insets and variables.
-no the crash doesn't seem to happen when i do a particular thing. The only
common thing that occurs is that i use hot keys a lot. That said, I use hot
keys a lot and most of the time the crash does not happen.
-no i am not on a network share. All files are local.
-Yes, FM 10 is fully patched.

In any event, debugging why this crash is happening would be non-trivial and
even if i did figure out why its happenings, there's no guarantee that i'd able
to find a fix. Adobe certainly isn't going to provide one.

Consequently, I am wondering if people have noticed whether FM 11 is
significantly more stable.Since I am in unstructured, there wasn't a compelling
reason for me to upgrade. However, i'll consider doing it, if it will reduce or
eliminate the frequency of crahses on framemaker.

Thanks,

Re: FrameMaker 10 Crashes Regularly, is unstructured

2013-08-08 Thread Eargle, Lore
I, too, have experienced regular, random (unstructured) FrameMaker 10 crashes
on Windows XP. In fact last week, as I was hurrying to meet a last-minute
request for a documentation update, FM10 crashed every time I tried to generate
the TOC, LOF, and LOT. I tried everything I could think of and some strategies
I found through searching the Internet. These included removing all the files
then adding them back one by one after creating a new TOC, keeping all of the
files in the book then removing them one by one, creating a new book and doing
both of the previous tasks, washing the files with MIF and redoing all of these
tasks, etc.

I was able to create a deliverable by creating a PDF of only the chapter files
and then creating a PDF of an earlier version of the TOC and editing it in
Acrobat. Unfortunately, the figure numbers restarted with each file and I
didn't have the time to renumber them all so it went to QA that way. I will fix
it before UAT. I ported everything to Word. Thank goodness I was only dealing
with 65 pages and not 3000.

At this point my supervisor is asking me to give up on FrameMaker and stick
with Word. I have seriously considering just reverting back to my copy of FM8.

It's very difficult to say whether your experience will improve with FrameMaker
11. I find FrameMaker 11 to be less temperamental than FrameMaker 10, but it's
far from crash-free. Try the 30-day trial version of FrameMaker 11. You should
know pretty quickly whether FM11 is more stable in your environment.

Do send your crash logs to Adobe. Crashes with a non-obvious cause (to
you) may be fixable by the FrameMaker development team.

FM 9 used to crash on me whenever I had Frame on my second monitor and used

RE: Catalog definitions ... fonts not available

2013-08-08 Thread Craig Ede
Check the master and reference pages. The fonts pod can help with fon
replacement, but I think you have to be in the specific page context. If
your docs are single sided, be sure to choose double-sided so you can see
the default master page as it probably contains these items in the header or
footer. For single sided document templates I always blank out the left
master pages a double-sided document and then save that having chosen
single-sided. Best to have invisible things blank.

Ok, I've inherited some Frame docs that use Helvetica, Times and Courier.
Those fonts aren't on my system.

I'm using these docs to create a template.

I've opened the book and all documents, then used the Fonts pod to locate
missing fonts and replace with an existing font. I've saved the documents,
closed and re-opened them.

I still get the 'missing fonts' message. The error log says that the catalog
contains fonts that aren't on my system.

Obviously the styles catalog has styles using the missing fonts (but those
styles aren't used in my documents).

What is the best way of tackling this?

RE: Catalog definitions ... fonts not available

2013-08-08 Thread David Artman
You could save the template(s) as MIF and search for the offending font. It's probably on some Reference page or tucked on a Master Page or some-such. Change the missing font name to the name of an available font (or just use the MIF to investigate where it's occurring, and use FrameMaker on its FM file to make the changes).Alternately, disable "Remember Missing Fonts" in Preferences, open the template(s), let font substitution do its thing, and then re-save. Shouldn't bother you any more.David

framers Digest, Vol 94, Issue 6 - FrameMaker 10 Crashes Regularly is unstructured FrameMaker 11 more stabke

2013-08-08 Thread Davis, David
Joseph, I've bneen using Frame11 here on Windows 7 (64 bit) here for a couple
of weeks now, and it has crashed 3 or 4 times so far.
(Seemed to be when I was working with EPS's and graphics frames - but hard to
say really - one time I just looked at it funny and it crashed).
I did send the crash log files to fmerror at adobe.com and once I just put
"ARRGH!" in the mail as the cause (as it was the second time it had
crashed that afternoon!) and to my amusement a nice gentleman from Adobe did
email me back asking if he could help lol

11 more stable

Thanks,
Joseph Lorenzini
