RE: End-of-flow wildcard? [footnote to the Word/Frame/ligature story]

2014-01-27 Thread Steve Rickaby
In e-mails from the authors, read here as pure text, ligatures such as 'fi' and
'fl' appear as 'I dunno' characters: blank squares. When pasted into
FrameMaker, the ligatures render correctly. However, FrameMaker puts a word
break around them: for example, double-clicking on 'flow' highlights just the
'ow' part.

Running a global find/replace on 'fl' and 'fi' and replacing them with
themselves, i.e. 'f' and 'l' or 'f'' and 'i' typed into the Replace box, fixes
the issue: FrameMaker can find the ligatures and correctly replace them with
the relevant two-character pair.

Weird...

Re: FREE TC CAMP Sat 25 Jan workshop Santa Clara, CA; world premiere live demo FrameMaker 12

2014-01-27 Thread Liz Fraley
Last CalL! TC Camp is TOMORROW at Mission College in Santa Clara, CA.

TC Camp Exclusive: See Adobe's TCS5 in person and maybe win a subscription!

TC Camp, the unconference for content creators, consumers, and the people
who support them, is happening at Mission College in Santa Clara on
Saturday 25 January 2014.

I don't know if you've been to an unconference before, but they are very
different from regular conferences. They are not juried. Sessions aren't
presenter-decided topics. It's much more fluid and much more audience
decided. All session topics are decided by the attendees on the day of the
event. Everyone nominates topics; we vote on them together; and then, those
sessions with enough votes get scheduled into the agenda. You can guarantee
there is always a session happening that you're interested in.

Unconferences are all hallway - like the hallway conversations you have
between session at regular conferences. At an Unconference, you get the
chance to work with other people to really wrap your arms around a topic
and figure it out as it applies directly to you.

The main unconference (afternoon) is Free. We have an expert panel to kick
things off which Scott Abel is moderating.

If you're interested, there are morning workshops that cost a modest $30.
The workshops happen in the morning before the main unconference starts.

There are 6 morning workshops to choose from that will help get the
creative juices flowing:

* Structured Authoring - lessons learned from the pioneers. Tracy Baker
(F5), Wendy Shaffer and Amy Bowman (VMWare) will be giving advice for
people learning DITA. All three of them were early DITA adopters and
learned by fire. They are passing on their lessons learned so you can
benefit from their experience.

* Analytics - learn how to apply and interpret analytics to improve your
content. You have a chance to hear from analytics folks (marketing folks)
about some of the secrets of SEO and using analytics, it's a great
opportunity.

* Content Strategy - Strategy from the outside (your customer's side). Pam
Noreault (ACI Worldwide) and Chip Gettinger (SDL) are presenting about
thinking strategically about xml publishing projects. It's lessons learned,
but from a manager's perspective. Pam's done it twice, and the second time
she decided to rearchitect content from the Customer's Perspective. This is
absolutely going to be a great session.

* Responsive Design - learn how to improve your authoring so your content
looks good anywhere. Mike Hamilton, from MadCap Software, will explain and
show techniques for authoring and delivering of content that responds to
the user needs whether they be handheld, mobile, or full screen PC so that
it not only works from a responsive design standpoint, but increases
usability and customer satisfaction.

* Content Quality - improve authoring and publishing efficiency and the
experience of your users. Doug Gorman from SimplyXML is talking about how
to improve authoring efficiency, publishing efficiency, re-usability, and
the experience of your information consumers. His workshop is doctype and
tool-independent because these lessons apply universally.

* Adobe - all about TCS5! This will be the first public showing of TCS5!
Max Hoffmann will be here to give the world premiere demo of the product
that was released on Tuesday this week

It's an amazing experience - energetic, dynamic, and all about the
attendees learning from each other.

If you want to see what someone from the SF STC had to say about last year,

Fm10 Tables and Change Bars

2014-01-27 Thread Chris Coggins
I have 6-column tables taking up dozens of pages, with each row containing
only 1line of text. Due to the customer's request, I need to have the
change bars appear as individual change bars beside each row, even along
consecutive rows, rather than one solid change bar down multiple rows. Does
anyone know how to force Fm10 to do this? I've used tables before where
this was possible, but do not know which settings to adjust to make my
current table's change bars behave similarly.

I tried putting a paragraph return at the end of the text in a cell, then
changing it to be a run-on punctuation so that the row doesn't grow. Then
selected the changed text in another cell to apply the change bar, but it
doesn't work. Once I mark 2 consecutive rows that way, the two change bars
join and form only one when the display is refreshed, even with the hidden
paragraph return.

Framemaker 12 third party vendor

2014-01-27 Thread Bjokne, Tim (Contractor)
Has anyone seen a reseller that is offering Frame 12 at a discounted
rate compared to what is available on the Adobe site? Perhaps that is
something that only happens months after the roll-out of a new version,
but I have a limited budget to purchase Frame 11 licenses, which I can
get for significantly less from a third party reseller, and I would love
to be able to upgrade to Frame 12, now that it is out.

Thanks.

Can't get to either the Paragraph Designer or Character Designer

2014-01-27 Thread David Downing
I was humming along very nicely with one of those tutorials until I hit a
major snag. I was supposd to do something with the paragraph designer, and
neither the tutorial nor the FM 12 User Guide was very clear on how to get
to it. I searched on my own, and found the menu option Format - Paragraph
- Designer, which looked like what I should select. So I selected it and
-- nothing happened. At least, nothing appeared that I could recognize as
the Paragraph Designer. The same thing happened with the character
designer. So either I'm making some kind of error or something's wrong with
my copy of FM. I hope it's my error and you can tell me how to correct it.

DropBox?

Another nice new feature in Windows 8 is that it offers integration to
Microsoft's cloud storage (SkyDrive), you get 7GB for free,
And it's pretty simple to set it to automatically back up stuff from a local
hard drive to the cloud as you work.

I lied: FrameMaker can't find the 'fl' if it is a ligature and 'f' 'l' are
typed into the Find dialog.

However - and this is weirder - I have had both 'fl' as a ligature and 'fl' as

(That was what caused my erroneous posting.)

I guess this is getting off the point, though, so I'll keep mum about it from

Font issue in Framemaker 10, Windows 7, 64-bit

2014-01-27 Thread Tammy Van Boening
All,

I am having a doozy of a time with fonts in Framemaker and I am hoping that
if I provide a detailed description of the problem, someone can point me in
the right direction. This SHOULD be Fonts 101, but I give. Here is the
summary:

* I have purchased four fonts directly from the font maker. The fonts
are Breuer Text Regular, Breuer Text Regular Italic, Breuer Text Bold, and
Breuer Text Bold Italic.
* There are other fonts in this family with Medium in their names,
such as Breuer Text Regular Medium, Breuer Text Medium Italic, etc.
* There are 8 font styles in all in this family, and they are
style-linked
* I have purchased and installed only the four fonts that I listed in
my first bullet. I have not ever installed any of the Medium fonts or any of
the other fonts, so style-linking should not be an issue.
* After installing these four fonts, I see this in my C:\Windows\Fonts
directory - Medium, Medium Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic. Note that the
Regular fonts are actually being renamed automatically to Medium upon
installation. I did not do this manually.
* When I open the top level Breuer Text font folder, I see four
individual detailed font folders - one named Medium, one named Medium
Italic, one named Bold and one named Bold Italic.
* If I open either of the Medium folders, the file name in the title
bar still reads as BreuerText-Regular. otf or BreuerTextItalic-Regular.
* When I create a paragraph tag in FM named BodyItalic, I select
Breuer Text as the Font Family, and then for the angle, I select Italic,
which should just switch the Regular font with the Regular Italic font, but
boom. . . the weight is also set to Bold immediately. For the weight
characteristic, there is a Regular option, so I try to select that and click
Update All, but the angle is immediately reset to Bold and I cannot change
it. Anytime I try to set the angle for any paragraph tag that uses the
Breuer text to Italic, FM automatically sets the weight to Bold as well.
* I opened a Word doc., typed in some text in Breuer text, and then
manually applied the Italic character. In Word, the text is only italicized.
It is NOT bolded. I have to manually apply the Bold in Word.
* If I use just Regular Breuer text in FM, and don't screw with the
angle, the weight remains Regular. It does not get bolded.

I have tried rebooting, clearing my font cache, rebooting again and I still
this issue in Framemaker with this danged Breuer text. I tried uninstalling
the Breuer text, clearing my font cache, reinstalling and still the same
issue. The Regular text gets loaded and installed with Medium in the name
in the Fonts directory and in FM., anytime I try to italicize a paragraph
tag, it gets bolded as well.

This is really screwing up my docs., obviously, as I don't want all
italicized text to be bolded.

Any and all advice is sincerely appreciated.

Objet : RE: Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes

Salut a chilly Toronto!

Has this ever worked for you? I run FM via RDP from home most days, but I first
VPN into our corporate network, the RDP to my office desktop (when FM is
installed) and run it from there. No crashes (except the "known" ones) doing it
that way.
In your scenario, where is FM running?

Subject: Opening FM 9 via Remote Desktop crashes

Hi,

I have FM 9 (latest patch) running on Windows 7. I want to use FM via Remote
Desktop.

If FM is already open, I have tested opening/editing/saving a FM file
sucessfully.

If i click on the taskbar where FM is pinned to launch the application, the
typical FM error screen is shown after a few seconds. I have FrameScript and do
have a start-up file; I removed it and redid the test with a similar FM crash.

Any suggestions?

B...Here in Quebec CIty it is -35 Celcius with the wind and has been like
that for a week now. As I walk 30 minutes to and from a bus stop on weekdays, I
have taken to wearing a hood used when skiing! I look like a thief who is
smoking heavily but do not attract any attention. After a 1/2 hour of walking,
even my snacks (chewy bars) are frozen! And the polar bears drinking the Pepsi
look so happy in those ads :)
