Agreed. I was badly caught by not know this when I cancelled my CC
subscription a few years ago. My licensed versions of Photoshop and
Illustrator didn't care that the files were created in a newer
version (other than alerting me to possible consequences) and opened
them just fine. However, none of my InDesign files would open in my
older licensed version. I was (at the time) able to find an online
service that would convert, for free, the files to a format that I
COULD open, but it was a laborious and irritating waste of time.
(Plus Rick Q generously helped me out with files that I caught after
the free service shut down.) How much effort would it have cost Adobe
to make it abundantly clear that there was no backward compatibility
to the files created with CC? It would not have taken me long to open
each of my InDesign files while my subscription was still working and
downsave them.

2017-02-03 Thread LGLists
David,

If you’d be able to test it out without too much bother, we’d appreciate it.
The new person needs to know for sure if she needs to purchase a script to get
the links to work.

All,

If anyone else knows about the text inset links in PDFs, much obliged if you’d
let us know to save David from having to test it out.

Thanks for the answers on the updates. Seems like the perpetual licenses work
as they always have. I was hard-pressed to believe that you couldn’t get bug
fixes and general updates. I have FM12 (TCS 5, I think) and have no need to
upgrade.

Thanks all!!

[Framers] access to your framemaker files WAS: Text inset links in PDFs in FM 2017 and no updates to purchased version

2017-02-03 Thread Craig Ede

...unless you resubscribe or backsave the files to a version you have a
perpetual license for. This is not terrifically hard to do using Extendscript
for large numbers of files.

Presumably you could subscribe for a year, then start a new subscription
sometime later and have access to your files.

Here's how perpetual licenses have been treated in the past. I haven't heard of
changes.

Updates are pushed out to you (via notification that they are available) and
can be triggered from the menu system using Help > Updates... You are NOT
required to install them.

Version upgrades are available as free upgrades if released within 30 days of
purchase (at least for individual users). This may not be true for corporate or
academic license purchasers.

Subscription users get all upgrades (at least that's the way Creative Cloud
works) and can decide to install them or not AND can retain older versions on
the system as well. So you aren't bumped up to a new release and HAVE to use
that release. You can use the older one(s). This is nice for consultants who
require specific versions for specific customers. I have advocated to Adobe
that given the FM world out there, new users ought to get access to all
previous version licenses they might request for use on a single machine.

Thanks.

I can't speak to the text insets, but as far as the subscription versus
outright license is concerned, I believe the differences are that the
updates/bug fixes are automatically pushed for the subscription, but you
have to download and install for the license; and if you stop paying the
subscription, you will not be able to open or edit your files in Frame
anymore.

[Framers] RESULTS: Up for discussion: changing Framers' default Reply-To behavior

2017-02-03 Thread FrameUsers Admin
During the last week, I've gotten good responses, both on-list and
off-list, to my request for comments about changing Framers' default
Reply-To behavior from Reply to Poster to Reply to List. Thank you
all so much for being involved in this decision.

By a majority of two to one, respondents would rather have messages
automatically reply to list.

Therefore, I plan to change the default reply-to setting for this
group to Reply to List. I will initiate this change on FEBRUARY 12
and we'll see how it goes. Hopefully no one is emailing content that
they'd be embarrassed by, regardless of who receives it. Slow down
and don't be so quick to hit Send. Anytime you're sending an email of
substance, take a minute to make sure that it says what you want it
to and that it's addressed to the person or group you want to read
it. In a world of instant communication, old-fashioned proofreading
is the most powerful weapon you have against embarrassing emails.

And please don't be put off by the idea of sharing your email with
the entire group. This is an extremely friendly bunch of people who
do not bash posters they disagree with. We have very informative
discussions on the pros and cons of a lot of ideas and solutions.

I'm excited at the idea of having more posts shared with the group
that were previously, either intentionally or accidentally, sent only
to the original poster. After all, the purpose of this group is to
share information.
