RE: A Pantone colour definition question

2013-07-31 Thread Davis, David
Garima,
when I do File Save as PDF in FrameMaker11, I first get a dialog to choose
file name and destination, then I get a PDF Setup for Selected File dialog.
The first tab of this is labelled Settings and has a panel on it with just
two radio buttons, only labelled RGB and CMYK, no explanation.
Is this what you mean by Uncheck the option for 'Convert CMYK colors to RGB' ?

Regards,

David

Hi Richard,

To retain CMYK colors in PDF, you can do the following:

1. Modify a job option to change color setting to 'leave color
unchanged'. Steps are:

Select: File-print setup. The printer selected should be 'Adobe PDF'.

Click on properties. click 'Edit' for any job option(which is to be used to
generate PDF) in Default settings. Go to 'color' tab. In 'color management
policies' change option to Leave color unchanged.

2. Do 'Save as PDF':

In PDF job options, select the job option created in step1

Uncheck the option for 'Convert CMYK colors to RGB'

Would suggest you to use the above settings for getting CMYK colors in PDF.
In case you are just interested in retaining CMYK colors for 'TIF' images, then
you can use the flag 'ConvertGraphicsToEPS'.
Open maker.ini file present in $FmHome directory. Mark ConvertGraphicsToEPS
as On. Restart Framemaker. Now, even if Convert CMYK colors to RGB option is
checked in PDF set dialog, graphics(jpeg, psd, tiff) will retain CMYK colors.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Garima

OK, cheers, Matt! :)

Re: talk of the "GDI" -

David, define your color as Pantone 390C, specify spot color, and use the CMYK
representation as the definition.

Arnis may jump in to explain when Windows stopped bolloxing the colors, but
with Win7, you should have no problems with the file.

Doing a Save as PDF, using the Adobe PDF print driver should respect the spot
color in the PDF, and if sent to a CMYK device, respect the color you defined
in the doc.

Try all of this and let me know if it doesn't work as promised.

However, the dialog this brings up is offering colours with a "CVC" suffix.

The Branding Guide I'm using also has a suggest CYMK match for the Pantone

Does this actually work though? Or will Frame still turn the spot-ink named
Pantone into an RGB value when distill it to a PDF?

A Pantone colour definition question

2013-07-30 Thread Davis, David
Here's one of those nefarious colour questions ;)
I'm using FrameMaker 11, although by the looks of the dialog I've got on my
screen, these settings haven't changed since at least Frame 5.5 ;)

I'm doing a doc where the company's branding guidelines ask for a squiggly line
in a particular colour.
They're asking for Pantone 390C
The interweb tells me the C suffix stands for Coated.

So, if I go to View Colour Definitions, then Colour Definitions, I can
chose PANTON(r) Coated from the list.
However, the dialog this brings up is offering colours with a CVC suffix. The
interweb appears to suggest this means Computer Video? Is that not something
different? I am confused! Why doesn't it just say C for the suffix?

In any case: the only reason I'm bothering about this at all is:
The Branding Guide I'm using also has a suggest CYMK match for the Pantone
colour.
I can type this in instead, but from reading the FrameMaker documentation, it
seems to suggest that if I ask it to put that colour in as a Spot, with a
named Pantone ink, then it will make its way through like that into whatever
PDF I make?
And it will then be up to the printer driver on whatever printer prints it to
decide the best CYMK match for Pantone 390C at print time... which is likely
to be a better match then me Frame guessing here today.
Does this actually work though? Or will Frame still turn the spot-ink named
Pantone into an RGB value when distill it to a PDF?
(Mind you, if I specify it as a CMYK, it's almost certainly going to RGB-ify
it? Or has Frame11 stopped all that nonsense? I've read much wailing and
gnashing of teeth about this online)

David

Do not use the Courier(r) font when Adobe Type Manager(r) is turned off

2013-07-24 Thread Davis, David
Hi folks.
After not using Frame day-to-day for a few years, I've finally landed a
contract where they want me to use it...
So I am just finding out what's new in Frame 11 and reading through all the
docs.

Not wanting to bombard the list with minutiae, but there are some quite odd
things buried in the Frame help files that look like they've been there since
the 1990s -
E.g. in Home / Using FrameMaker 11 / Templates and Page Layout / Formats
Fonts I found this little oddball:

- Do not use the Courier(r) font when Adobe Type Manager(r) is turned off
or not installed. If you do use Courier without ATM, FrameMaker products do not
accurately display the Courier font.

Lol what on earth is that about? Adobe Type Manager hasn't been needed for
working with PostScript Type1 fonts since Windows 2000!
