[Framers] FrameMaker to MadCap Flare not going well

Hi All,

I've been tasked with taking our 3,000 pages of FrameMaker docs to MadCap
Flare for HTML output. I haven't had much luck with the process. I took a
training course, but it was mostly about how Flare is laid out and how to
do basic tasks in Flare. The FrameMaker to Flare conversion was only a few
pages in the course.

When I did the import, I mapped the FrameMaker styles to Flare styles, but
I can't find any p styles I created except one. And one of my headings has
a left margin indent that I don't want, but I can't find the setting to
change it.

I want to create a table with an image in one cell and the text in the
other. I can't find any info on how to do this.

These are just a few of the problems I have been grappling with for the
past few weeks. Any recommendations on how to learn this program? At this
point, I am so not getting it!

Hi Jeff,

Apparently, it's a feature introduced with  Adobe 9.3.3. I haven't tried
doing anything like this for a while, so I didn't realize it was no longer
working.

I can understand limiting the opening of a .exe or .zip file, but why

Hi All,

Using FrameMaker 12, I created a message openfile hyperlink in FrameMaker
that is supposed to create a link to a pdf file that was created in Word.
Here is the syntax:

message openfile "...\\SEMulator3D_Best_Practices.pdf"

After I create a pdf of the FrameMaker file, I get this message when I
click on the link to the pdf created in Word:



Where did I go wrong?

Hi Salome,

I can use FrameMaker's Character Palette to insert a special character in
text, but I can't use it to insert a special character in an equation. And
Alt + 238 gives me the standard epsilon character; I need the lunate
version.

copying this symbol from the Windows character map, but I can't paste the
symbol in the equation (even as a string).

If you are creating an equation using the Equations Editor, you can add the
"hat" as a diacritical mark to an equation entity.

FrameMaker won't add a new page to file

Hi All,

I'm having an odd problem. I recently updated from FrameMaker 9 to
FrameMaker 12. Today I opened one of the FrameMaker 9 files for the first
time in FrameMaker 12. After saving it in the FM 12 format, I noticed that
if I add text to the last page, it will not flow to a new page. Instead, I
get a black line at the bottom of the page that indicates that the contents
of the text frame is larger than the text frame itself. Why won't
FrameMaker simply create a new page so that this text can continue on a new
page?

Thanks go out to Rick Quatro; I don't think I would have thought to look
for this on my own. He found the problem for me. Somehow when I saved this
file in FrameMaker 12, my master page text frames were tagged as PostScript
code. Very odd. I don't know why, but at least it's fixed.

 instead of letting FM add a new page automatically. Once you have a
 disconnected page at the end of your file you can’t delete it or change it.
 The only we have found to fix it is to import the content into a new copy

Re: Frame crash on Windows under parallels

Hi Wim,

I recently posted a similar question. I also have Windows Ultimate with
lots of RAM (16 GB) and dual processors (Intel Core i7-4700MQ 2.4GHz).
FrameMaker 9 crashes when I scroll in the Open dialog. I didn't get a
definite answer. I was told to reinstall FrameMaker or to reinstall my OS.
I haven't had time to try either. If you find a solution, please share.

I'm running Technical Communication Suite. There's no telling what the
problem could be. Tech support at Dell (Makers of Alienware) recommended I
reinstall my operating system. Someone else recommended that I reinstall
Technical Communication Suite. Upgrading to the latest may solve my
problem; if that was guaranteed, I wouldn't mind spending the money.

 2 years ago, I got a new Lenovo W-530 laptop with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I
 have FM 8 installed too, and it runs just fine.

Unfortunately, it's not limited to a particular doc. And I forgot to add
that if I switch FrameMaker 9 to run in XP compatibility mode, the crashes
go away. But then my FrameScript add-on acts as if it is unlicensed.

Tech support at FrameScript did not recommend that I run in XP

All the files I'm trying to open are local. What's annoying is that the
machine I had before was a Windows 7 machine, 64-bit Home Edition, with no
problems. When I got this upgrade, I started to have problems with
FrameMaker.
