FM9 Hierarchical book groups/folders not excluded from output in RH8
I have a book (unstructured FM) that uses some text insets in some of my chapters in order to reuse content. However, when I create help in RH8, sometimes a few of my cross-references in chapters with text insets aren't treated as links, but as plain text. I think to resolve this, I want to include the text insets as files in my book so they get updated when I update the book. So, I tried using both a group and a folder in the book to do this, and setting the group/folder to be excluded from output. The FM book updated beautifully, and the insets were correctly excluded from the TOC. But when I generate my WebHelp in RH8, the excluded inset topics are included in the TOC and are generated in a folder corresponding to the name of my FM book's group or folder (behavior seems identical for folder or group). As expected, the original link problem is resolved, but I don't want to add delete the excluded content from RH as a manual step every time we update the helps. Let me know if this is just another feature of the integration between RH and FM in TCS2, if it's an issue that's already been reported to Adobe, or if there is actually a way to make this work. Re: Can the spelling checker be trusted?
I've seen this error and do not use Franklin Gothic Demi, so I don't think it's specific to that font. I've also encountered it in paragraphs that have no overrides or character styles applied at all. It seems like the spell checker makes the assumption that your most likely error is omitted spaces, if it can find any smaller words in your misspelled word. If the assumption were instead that your most likely mistake was to have misspelled a single word, the first suggestion would more often be correct. -- Shane Taylor | Technical Writer WebAssign | 919.829.8181 x147 ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Annoying FM quirk
FM tends to treat empty paragraphs differently than those containing text. Changing the paragraph style to use a space character as an autonumber *might* fool FM into treating the paragraph correctly, but I haven't tested this. When I apply the tag, the pilcrow is displayed in the Fuschia color, but after that, boom, it's a crapshoot. Sometimes the pilcrow holds the color and other times, it doesn't and I have to go back manually reapply the tag. It's very annoying as when proof-reading/editing my documents, I need to confirm that the tag is indeed a PageBreak tag and not a Body tag. (If I were just printing the manuals, then it wouldn't be an issue, but I am single-sourcing these docs. and using ePublisher to produce online help, so the issue becomes critical for this.) Has anyone experienced this or something similar at all? Why on earth won't the pilcrow hold the color? FWIW, I am using FM9 (all patched and current) on a Win7 64-bit system. Re: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker
If you end up having to switch from (presumably unstructured) FrameMaker, I'd suggest switching not to InDesign but to DITA to accomplish your goals. You can leverage your group's existing FM knowledge by still using FM to create your PDFs, but with DITA you are no longer locked into one company's proprietary format, and you can take advantage of newer technologies and deliverable types in the future without having to change formats again. We've got over 15 years invested in FrameMaker and all our docs are created and maintained in FrameMaker. My books are delivered as PDFs. I am loathe to shift from FrameMaker to InDesign given our extensive history with FrameMaker. My question is, can I create eBooks and EPUB documents from FrameMaker, or am I truly locked in to InDesign for the eBooks and EPUB standard? If I can use FrameMaker, where would I find information about using FrameMaker to create eBooks and EPUB documents? Thanks! Re: DPI Recommendation for Images
Also consider whether your audience will be viewing the PDF on a Windows, Mac, Linux, or UNIX machine, because the zoom level to match monitor pixels will vary based on the system DPI setting (and possibly the PDF viewer). Since we couldn't provide a consistently optimal viewing experience for users across platforms, we decided to use 150 DPI because that provides good print output (as a factor of most printer DPI capabilities). Shane Taylor On Mar 22, 2011, at 1:13 PM, Joseph Lorenzini wrote: Hi all, I'd like to get people's opinion on what they think is the best choice for DPI. However, I set the default zoom in the PDFs to 125% because I thought that 150% was just too big and overwhelming in a PDF. This means that the images look degraded. I'd like to improve this. As I see it, I have two options. (1) In FrameMaker, I could change each image's DPI to 120. This means that the image would NOT look degraded in a PDF at a zoom level of 125%. The drawbacks are two fold: 1) I have an enormous amount of documentation and it would take a considerable amount of time changing the DPIs for each image though I suspect there may be a plugin out there that could automate this process for each book. 2) Images would be noticeably bigger and take up more space in the documentation. (2) I could set the default zoom in the PDFs to 150%. The upside to this is that its a very trivial change. The downside is that the PDFs would be enormous. On a monitor resolution of 1200x1600 it looks big but ok, whereas on 1024x768 I find it to be too large to be readable. Admittedly, I am assuming that most users in a corporate environment would have monitors with a maximum resolution of 1200x1600 but I don't know for sure. Plus, not everyone likes a res that high. So what say you all? Which option do you favor and why? And of course, if there's another option I haven't thought please let me know.
