Re: OT--PDF Read Out Loud problem
Carol, Files created using Distiller create flat files, with no interactivity. They may be repaired, using tedious methods in Acrobat. It is much better to create accessible publications using techniques that take into consideration the entire design and workflow to minimize repairs. True accessibility is accomplished through PDF tags. That is where screen reader software that people with disabilities use looks for content. One of those is JAWS, much more sophisticated tool than Adobe Acrobat Read Out Loud feature. I recently posted an article specifically on accessibility in FrameMaker at http://jetsetcom.net/uncategorised/building-adobe-framemaker-documents-for-accessibility.html Distiller is print production centric, as it uses PostScript that drives printing devices. There are newer methods that give better results, when focus is on creating PDF files that are posted on line, thus required to be accessible. Re: Need a good introductory tutorial for FrameMaker 12
David, just be sure you do not compare FrameMaker to PageMaker. Two different worlds, one long gone and replaced by InDesign. FrameMaker is more like a very able text processor with focus on text content, rather than layout of individual pages. Be sure you cover master pages, format tags and catalogs. Hi Rick, How about paragraph alignment towards spine and away from spine? Anchored frames can be flexibly aligned this way, but not paragraphs! Re: [Framers] "Secret" Freeze Pagination Feature
I think that Rick's comments are very helpful. I was not aware of the "page freeze" feature, but I certainly would use it if it simply meant that pages can be numbered using 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 system (as an example) for inserted pages. To resolve exactly that issue, I resorted to creating a Flow B text frame, that can only fit one paragraph, positioned in the footer area. I created two Paragraph tags with autonumbering property defined for two levels (<n+> and .<n+>). Since only one paragraph can fit inside one frame, simply pressing Enter key numbers the pages. Needless to say, it is a very manual process to have all pages numbered. Additionally, FrameMaker does not have alignment towards or away from the spine for paragraphs, although it does for Anchored frames, which added to the "manual" aspect of the process. Fortunately, we use templates, so it needed to be done only once. The fact that current "page freeze" does not work in a Structured flow, it would make it useless in the current format. In short, the "page freeze" feature would most likely be used, if it did not destroy pagination for the entire document. If the same issue of page numbering was to be dealt with in InDesign, it would be very simple few steps. Re: FrameMaker, PDFs, and accessibility
Requirement for document accessibility is that a document has a language specified as a property. Typically it is done at the document level (from File PropertiesAdvanced) or changed in a tag property (right-clickPropertiesLanguage) if a specific tag language is different from the rest of the content. Acrobat PDF tags are limited, so en-us tag simply is not valid. Valid accessibility PDF tags are similar to HTML tags. If any other tags are used a Role Map needs to be updated in Acrobat, so that assistive software readers, such as JAWS can interpret tags resulting from conversion to PDF. Re: mapping table mystery--or is it misery?
Karen, Does your file have text imported from Word or RTF? Depending on your import options setup, Word styles come in as tags and they may be hiding in empty paragraphs (spaces between paragraphs with FM tags) or as the very last tag where end of the flow mark appears. Do you use HTML Setup Utility? If so this is what updates your HTML Mapping Table and automatically adds the new tags This is where I would check first. Re: adjusting an underline (underscore)
Although using a table cell as a formatting feature is very common in FrameMaker, it is only acceptable for publications printed on paper. If a document is exported to online formats, such as PDF or HTML serious issues appear. HTML code will be converted to an HTML table, with a full set of table tags. PDF files will be rendered not accessible according to Section 508 Compliance standards, since table should only be used as data Your best solution for controlling a line below a paragraph, that may resemble an underline, is to create a line on a Reference Page, then update or create a Paragraph Format Tag that refers to that line in Below Pgf, Advanced properties in the Paragraph Designer. FM does not give you any direct control over the position, weight or type of the line in an underline. mapping table mystery--or is it misery?
Karen, Does your file have text imported from Word or RTF? Depending on your import options setup, Word styles come in as tags and they may be hiding in empty paragraphs (spaces between paragraphs with FM tags) or as the very last tag where end of the flow mark appears. Do you use HTML Setup Utility? If so this is what updates your HTML Mapping Table and automatically adds the new tags This is where I would check first. Hi Bjorn, Frame names from Reference pages appear in Paragraph Designer on the Advanced tab/options in the drop down choices for Frame Above Pgf/Below Pgf. Re: [Framers] Structured import: Sizing the image as well as the anchored frame
Hi Rick, I referenced in EDD an Object Style to format images. I used Object Styles>Object Properties>Scaling ... value. Provided it is consistent, it works quite well with images, though I had trouble with sizing frame. To remove the default offsetting of images in anchored frames, Read/Write rules includes these lines: element "img" { fm property horizontal offset value is "0"; fm property vertical offset value is "0"; etc. Perhaps if you can combine the methods, it will work.
