Find/Replace restarts at beginning

2012-04-06 Thread Everette, Dimi
I've seen FM do this when it finds the search phrase and you make a change in
the document. I guess FM is just making sure! Yep, it's frustrating.

Hi all

I am sure I have seen something in a forum about this before but cannot find
anything on it now.

When I search for a term/paragraph style etc throughout a book, Frame opens a
file, searches for the term, then instead of opening the next file in the book,
goes back to the start of that file, searches again, and only when it reaches
the end THIS time does it pop up the message "Unsaved changes in File:x. Save
before closing". It then moves on to the next file.

Does anyone else see this behaviour? I'm using Frame 8 on Windows 7.
And is there any way to stop this?

Thanks
Laura

FM window minimizing unexpectedly

2012-03-28 Thread Everette, Dimi
This thing is driving me crazy...I'll be working in my Frame doc and suddenly
the window shrinks down to about one inch by three inches! I thought it had
something to do with my cursor hitting the edges of the monitor (especially the
right side), but I've made sure the FM window opens on the left side and now it
just seems to happen randomly. I've checked the interface preferences and found
nothing that would seem to cause the minimizing to happen.

I'm using FM 10 on Win 7, but the same thing has also happened with
Illustrator. I've checked FM help and the forums but didn't see a solution. One
might be there, but I didn't see it. :)

Please help!

First I use the Find/Change dialog to go looking for any cross reference.

Then, a little later, I hit ctrl+f to find some text, type the text, and hit
return, all without looking at the Find/Change dialog. But the Find/Change
dialog maintained Any cross reference in the Find field, my typing did
nothing, and the Change All button is active. So hitting Enter is telling
Frame that I want to find all cross references and replace them with nothing.

I get the dialog saying made 93 changes, to my horror, but it would have
been nice to get a dialog saying, Dude, you're about to delete all of your
cross references, are you sure? (Of course I undid, and I also realize there's
the revert to saved command.)

Is there someplace I can turn such warnings on?

Thanks,

Specifying how a PDF in search results open

2012-01-31 Thread Everette, Dimi
Whew, tough coming up with the subject line! :)

I've just posted this issue on the FrameMaker forum but will try it here as
well.

Say I'm trying to figure out how to place a test call on a Polycom HDX system.
I enter place test calls HDX in my search text box and get a few results, one
of which is in the Administrator's Guide for Polycom HDX Systems. You can see
the text I searched for highlighted in the results, but when you click the
link, the PDF just opens to page 1, rather than to the page where that phrase
is. It doesn't seem that creating a named destination for everything a user
might search for is practical, let alone possible.
[cid:image001.gif@01CCDF62.7E827650]

I wonder whether it's a limitation of the search engine, rather than FM or
Acrobat. I'm almost positive I had a PDF open to the appropriate page in one
search or another.

Thanks for your help!

Dimi

RE: FM 10 Tab Scrolling Arrows Disappeared

2011-12-09 Thread Everette, Dimi
Hi Nancy,

I noticed the same thing with my books. It seems that FM10 gives you only a
double-arrow to the right of the last tab you see--click the arrows to see a
list of open files. It's somewhat less helpful than how we used to be able to
scroll back and forth, but it's the only solution I've found.

Subject: FM 10 Tab Scrolling Arrows Disappeared

Hi, all. I'm using FM 10 on a Windows 7 system.

I'm sure I've accidentally changed a setting, but I have no idea what I've done.

My books typically have 10 or 12 chapters and I usually open all the files at
once. They are represented by tabs across the top of the workspace, and there
used to be scrolling arrows on either side so I could scroll to tabs that
weren't in sight. Now those tabs are gone. I found them useful and I want them
back!

The only unusual thing I've recently done was open a book, save it under a new
name, and regenerate the book. Of course, the previous TOC and IOM files
dropped out, so I deleted them from the book and generated new ones. After a
while I noticed that the scrolling arrows were gone. I've closed and reopened
FM and also rebooted the system, to no avail.

Does anyone know how I can get those arrows back?

Thanks.

RE: I can PDF individual files in book, but NOT the whole book

2011-11-01 Thread Everette, Dimi
I can't quite remember about previous versions of FM, but in v10, using File
Save Book As and selecting a book type of PDF works perfectly. You do have to
be sure you've clicked the book window rather than one of the files in the book.

Is the implication of this that 'Save as PDF' is fixed in FrameMaker 10?

Just interested...

RE: XREF bug with conditional text

2011-10-13 Thread Everette, Dimi
Johan, I just experienced this bug with one of my chapters too. It was the
first time I'd worked with this particular book. One of the chapters has dozens
of xrefs that are within conditional text that is hidden, so I get dozens of
broken xref messages when I generate. With my books, if I use the Find tool
and FrameMaker does not find any missing xrefs, I consider it a non-issue and
ignore the error messages.

Subject: XREF bug with conditional text

This is a bug we've experienced at least since Frame 8 and we've finally
tired of it (we're using Frame 10 now). I have found nothing when
googling or in the Adobe Support forums.

The bug is simple to describe: For cross-reference formats that use the
Default ¶ Font tag, if a cross-reference is tagged as conditional, the
part of the cross-reference that falls outside of the Font tagDefault
¶ Font pair sometimes loses the conditioning.

For example, I have an XREF format defined as:

Reference$paratextDefault ¶ Font, page $pagenum

A cross-reference might look like this:

See CHAPTER ABOUT FEATURE A, page 66.

Because this cross-reference points to a chapter that is only included
for products with feature A, we have given it the condition A only
which is set to hide when we generate the documentation for product B.

However, after updating the book, , page 66 will be without the
condition tag and thus visible in all PDF versions. Apparently,
sometimes the Default ¶ Font tag terminates the condition and not just
the font tag.

Has anyone else seen this? Is there a workaround? A fix?

Or you can:

1. Right-click in any paragraph with the desired format in the source
file and select Copy Special Copy Paragraph Format.

2. Go to the target file and select the paragraph you want to apply the
format to.

3. Right-click and select Paste (or just CTRL-V without right-clicking).

4. With your cursor still in the paragraph, open the Paragraph Designer.

5. Click Apply, which causes the New Format dialog to appear.

6. Click Create to store the format in the paragraph catalog and reapply
it to the selection. (You can deselect the Apply to Selection checkbox before
clicking Create if you want to.)

The same steps work for copying character formats, except:

2. Go to the target file and select the word or words you want to apply the
format to.
4. With your cursor still in the word, open the Character Designer.
6. [of course you're storing the format in the character catalog]

 FM10 (Win7 64-bit)

I'm lost on this one: I want to import/copy a single paragraph style
definition from one FM file to another. Just that one style, no others, and
 no content.

 How do I do this?

 Thanks,

 -Dan

RE: Stupid question #843: Importing a SINGLE paragraph style from another FM file?

2011-08-22 Thread Everette, Dimi
Dear Fred,

Thanks for attempting to make me look like an idiot. :)

I appreciate that you think your way is the only way to accomplish the task,
but then, your step 3 mentions the Character Designer, which has nothing to do
with the original task. My feeling is that copying a paragraph that you only
delete later is a bit juvenile, but, hey, that's just me. I've never had a
problem with my steps and I've certainly never screwed up an existing format by
following my steps.

Sorry, gang, but it's early Monday morning and I just hate opening my email to
find an insult.

Be careful with Step 6 (that's step 6 in the first procedure, the one with
consecutive step numbers). As written, what you are doing is redefining an
existing paragraph tag (the one that was applied to the current paragraph) to
have the imported formatting characteristics. What I think was desired was to
import a paragraph format along with its own tag name, and the easiest way to
do that (and avoiding the possibilitiy of mistyping the name in the paragraph
Designer) is to copy and paste a paragraph of the desired format, add its
format to the paragraph catalog, then delete the paragraph. Anything else is
just overcomplicating the process.

RE: So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-02 Thread Everette, Dimi
Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I'm excited about getting FM 10 here at work.
I've been using FM9 for a couple of years, and it was a huge improvement over
7.2 to me. I've used only unstructured and I'm just doing run-of-the-mill
technical publications, but I love FrameMaker--always have and always will
(probably!).

FM 7.2 was good enough for a long time, but I discovered that it didn't play
well with some of the older books I work on, especially the large ones. Then
came FM 9 and the nifty redesign--yeah, some of it's a PITA but you get used to
it. After attending the Adobe webinar about TCS3 and one about FM 10, I am
ready to go to the next level.

Regards,
Dimi

 From: kgrace4...@aol.com

I would really like to make the use of revision bars to indicate
changes made to a document that I am working on. I am aware of
automatic change bars. I don't think this is the best option because it
indicates all changes with a revision bar. I would like to be able to
handle which revisions get highlighted as a change. I seem to recall
the use of character tag or something along those lines but that method
seemed to have some drawbacks. The criteria that is most important to
me is being able to remove the revisions marks when going from version
2 to 3 so that the next set of revision marks only indicates the
changes in version 3 and not versions 2 and 3. Has someone developed a
bulletproof process or methodology for handling revisions to
 documents?

Customer-friendly word for "landline"

2011-02-03 Thread Everette, Dimi
Hmm...we use POTS (plain old telephone service) but that probably won't work
for 6th graders! :)

Dimi

RE: Conditional text in Frame 9

2011-01-26 Thread Everette, Dimi
Hear, hear!! I had a gap between version 5 and 7.2 for using FrameMaker and
didn't do much with conditional text in the old days. It was indeed a poor and
illogical decision to treat the pilcrow (never heard that before!) as something
different from the rest of the paragraph. Of course you want the pilcrow to be
part of the conditional text!!

I have run across this behavior quite a bit and simply have to go back and
apply the condition to the pilcrow.

Regards,
Dimi

I believe this change in behavior was introduced in FM7, and my recollection is
that it was described as a correction in the release notes. In other words,
it appeared to have been a change that was made deliberately by the development
team in India. And if that is the case, it's now an uphill battle to establish
that this illogical and annoying behavior is, in fact, *incorrect* and needs to
be changed back to the way it was for years and years before FM7.

I have Frame 8 and can reproduce it. You can avoid it by not including
the pilcrow in the condition in the first place. And I didn't know it
  was called a pilcrow...

Write the paragraph. Swipe the cursor over it and include the final
period but not the pilcrow. Apply conditional text to that and you
  avoid the problem.

But if you triple-click the paragraph and apply conditional text you
  get the problem.

But if I don't conditionalize the pilcrow, when I hide the condition the
pilcrow stays there, and I end up with a blank paragraph. In most cases,
 that's not what I want. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution.
