Graphics scale resetting to 100% when I open file

2009-12-11 Thread Gordon Maney
For reasons that are not clear to me it seems the prevailing thought
here is to not copy into document, instead importing by reference.

I always use the copy into document method. I never have any problems,
and have been doing it this way for about seven years. Notice I used the
word, never. That is also with some fairly large documents. It has not
been uncommon to have documents from 50 to 75MB, and I have experimented
with documents as large as 175 MB and never had any trouble.

I am using AutoCAD and .jpg's of photos. I use the scaling function all
the time with the AutoCAD content and never have any trouble.

Perhaps you might try copying into document. I find no reason to leave
photos in some folder. Inevitably the document gets moved or the photos,
and then it does not work.

Hi,

I'd say FindChangeSpecial is best for this job. Very convenient.
Very good, when your template has been updated and format names
or format usage have changed.
FindChangeSpecial allows you to delete or exchange these formats:
Paragraph formats
Character formats
Cross reference definitions
Table formats
Conditions
User variables

Infos here:

Best regards

Winfried

Framemaker 8 document won't print photo

2009-10-26 Thread Gordon Maney
I have used Framemaker for about eight years. I have had very few
problems with documents. I now have a document that won't print a photo
imported as a .jpg file. I do this all the time and have no problems. I
discover it is the document and not the photo. I am unsure as to why
this problem developed, and have made some tests with alternative
images, to no avail. It prints a gray box, as it would if the link for a
linked photo was broken. I always use the copy into document approach.

The document will generate a .pdf that prints successfully, which tells
me something.

I am going to try a new document, copying and pasting all contents of
this one into it. No matter what, I can get past this document. I am
wondering if anyone can shed useful light on this, enabling me to avoid
such a situation in the future.

Thank you for your help,
Gordon Maney

Strategy for reading list

2009-10-26 Thread Gordon Maney
I greatly appreciate the value to be found in this mailing list. I admit
I am really accustomed to using web forums, and have no experience using
lists such as this.

It has been hard for me to engage with the emails and be able to pick my
way meaningfully through the information. It is often confusing to me.
It seems that to stay connected with the process you would have to read
absolutely everything, all the time, otherwise the chain is broken.

My question is this: How do you engage with this mechanism so you can
best understand the flow of content and follow topics?

Thank you,
Gordon Maney

Creating paragraph style with colored bar bearing a graphic

2009-09-11 Thread Gordon Maney
Hello, first post ever

I have been using Framemaker for about six or seven years, primarily
within the context of a manual document template created long ago. I
have forgotten how we made a particular paragraph style and need to make
some more like it.

This style is used for cautions and warnings in technical manuals
pertaining to industrial machinery. The current ones have a colored bar
running full column width, and the bar displays a graphic symbol
[triangle including an exclamation point] and the word, warning or
caution. Below that bar is where your entered text will appear; the
specifics of your warning or caution.

To be in compliance with some international styles of safety
information, I need to make some more, perhaps with different symbols
and certainly different words. I can't for the life of me figure out how
these are constructed.

Can someone here tell me how to do this? I would be happy to email some
examples to someone if that was helpful or necessary.

Thank you for your consideration
