RE: Not selecting the entire word in Frame
I think you just need to hold shift and press the arrow key. If you hold Ctrl as well, it selects the whole word. I work with keyboard shortcuts a lot. When I'm editing, I often put the cursor in a word then hit Ctrl+Shift+left arrow, to highlight the part of the word I want to change. I would have sworn that, until a few minutes ago, this would select only the part of the word from the cursor to the beginning of the word. But now it's selecting the entire word. I can't find how to set a preference to indicate how I want Frame to behave. In Word, there's the option When selecting, automatically select entire word. I thought there was something similar in Frame. Have I been hallucinating? Thanks. RE: Convert A3 to A4 format
Hi Rod, I frequently have to change page size, as the project managers discuss options for brochures, quick starts... If you don't want to develop a different template, you could give the following a bash (as suggested to me by my excellent partner): 1. Calculate the size of the text frames (including headers, footers and any on custom master pages) that you want in the new files. 2. Change these text frames in your original document. Yes it looks weird, but it saves lots of hassle after the page resize. 3. Save the file as MIF. 4. Open the MIF file in a text editor. 5. Search for PageSize, find the values that follow this string, and use Search+Replace to change them to the size you want. 6. Save and close the MIF file. 7. Open the MIF file in FrameMaker, check that all the page sizes are okay and that the text frames are where you want them. 8. Save as an FM file. You can then use this file to import master page and page size to other files. RE: Cursor key navigation in tables - and another thing (graphic frame placement)
Hi Rick, I'd love to apply what you describe below. However, in my FM10 Fminit folder, I have a configui folder (no config folder), and no customui.cfg file. Can you tell me which of the files in there is the right one: Cmds.cfg (which I see someone has already mentioned...) Mathcmds.cfg Sample.cfg Wincmds.cfg Or do I need to create a config folder and a file called customui.cfg? Oh, and while I'm emailing the list: Whenever I put a new graphic frame in (eg when doing Esc fif to place a screenshot), FM centers the frame. I need my graphic frames left-aligned, so it is a pain to have to reset this each time. I hunted through the maker.ini file but found nothing. Is there some way of setting FM to always left-align new graphic frames? This change does not affect the function of the unmodified cursor keys in regular text. To specify a modifier key in a KeySequence string, just use a plus sign for Shift, a caret for Ctrl, or a tilde for Alt. The modifier key symbol(s) needs to appear at the start of the string with no space (i.e. immediately to the left of the slash). For example: > would define the keystroke combination for moving down a row in a table to be the Ctrl key plus the down arrow cursor key. BTW, all of this is documented in a PDF called CustomizingfFrameProducts.pdf that Adobe used to distribute in the Documentation directory of the FrameMaker installation. Unfortunately, this document was last updated for FrameMaker 7.0, and was no longer distributed with versions after 9.0. I would hope that this file is still available somewhere on the Adobe website, but I suspect that may be over-optimistic. -Fred Ridder > Date: Mon, 18 Mar 2013 10:02:10 -0400 > Subject: Re: Cursor key navigation in tables - and another thing (graphic > frame placement) > From: ljsims.ml at gmail.com > To: hbailey at ocztechnology.com > CC: framers at lists.frameusers.com > > I created a customui.cfg file and put it in the fminit\configui folder > and it works perfectly. Single sourcing in the the new TCS3
Hi Kate, I have experimented with the single-sourcing (FM10 to RH9) and found some of the same problems as you, I suspect. The information available regarding single-sourcing is limited, bitty and slightly frustrating if you want to use your own CSS. The TCS forum guys (http://groups.google.com/group/TCS-Users?hl=en) were quite helpful, although I'm not sure I have fully understood everything. It seems that there are limits to how well RH applies your CSS, so you have to use RH's Style Mapping features. I haven't yet found a comprehensive (written) step-by-step procedure, but the TCS forum can be useful once you have absorbed all the lessons from the adobe tutorials at http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/event/index.cfm?event=listloc=en_usproduct=RoboHelp. I work for a relatively small company, and unfortunately I am relatively new to both RoboHelp and FrameMaker. My company wants to switch to having our online help and our user's manual to be essentially the same. They have thought about using the single sourcing available in TCS2. I have been having some problems with the single sourcing and wanted to see if anyone has had similar problems. 1) So, first of all, is anyone out there using the interactive linking to single source between FrameMaker and RoboHelp? And if so, what kind of problems have you run into? I have run into issues with formatting. Sometimes it just does not accept the CSS I have written even though I know the code is fine. I also have had problems with pictures as well as issues with the links crossing over. Is this a problem with the stylesheets, which I have had difficulty editing? Or is it a problem with how the original FrameMaker documents were created? Am I just an inexperienced user? I realize you do not know for sure because you are not here with me, but if you had any insights about known issues or common problems with the single sourcing, that would be helpful. 2) Has anyone switch from TCS2 to TCS3 or TCS3.5 for single sourcing purposes and if so, why? I have been trying to determine the pros and cons, but as far as I can tell, there is not a lot of enhanced capability. Any help that you all could give me would be very much appreciated. Thanks for the table to FM/PDF suggestions
Thanks to everyone who has given me suggestions so far. I am trying to get a bit more info about the back end, and also will investigate some of the suggestions. Simplify getting table-based data to FM / PDF
Hi, Apologies for the length of my query: I don't know how to put it more succinctly! I wonder if anyone has ideas on how to improve a process for taking table-based information (from .reg files, saved to HTML then converted to Word) into FrameMaker and finally made into PDF (as part of a large book). The source info is created by many people typing into mysterious files and parsed by coding. I have no access to these tables or the coding and no ability to maintain either. But they are very well looked after by an intelligent and helpful techie. The source info is highly structured and suitable for keeping in a database. In the smallest instance, the source info translates to 250 A4 pages of tables. In the largest instance (so far), the source info translates to 900 A4 pages. The source is used by many people and only specific parts of it are taken into the book. It is in effect conditionalised so that the view of it I convert only shows the parts I need. Currently I have to: -open the .reg page in IE -save as HTML -open in Word and save as Word -open the Word file in FM -apply FM template -run a (fabulously helpful) Framescript to tidy everything up -create a LoP for various headings in the converted file -create a few cross refs to places in the converted file -do the book and PDF things you usually have to do. Specifically, I am looking for a swifter way to get from source info to either FM or PDF. This means I would like suggestions on: - formats the source info could be in, that quickly and accurately convert to FM or PDF - if going from source straight to PDF, suggestions on how to deal with the LoP and cross refs plus formatting to match the FM template (tools or automation routes) As I have to add navigation (such as cross refs and the LoP), I suspect that there isn't a better way than using FM. Fine by me, but I'm open to ideas. No, I can't train the source inputters to use FM - it's hard enough training them to spell... Please reply directly to me, as I'm on digest. RE: Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changes facility
Thanks, but that doesn't explain why condition C shows and hides successfully, even when it also has the track changes condition applied... -Original Message- From: Combs, Richard [mailto:richard.co...@polycom.com] Sent: 30 March 2010 16:11 To: Heidi Bailey; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changes facility Heidi Bailey wrote: FM8p277, Windows XP. I have a document with 3 conditions in: call them A, B and C for ease. I add text with the Track Changes facility on, so that reviewers can see what's new. I then apply the relevant conditions to relevant words/numbers/sentences. Then I set just condition A text to show, so that I can make a pdf file. However, condition A and B text is showing! Condition C seems to behave as you'd expect: the condition C text only displays when you set it to show. For example, a table cell has the entry 108.00, where condition A applies to the 10 (so the entry for A should show 10.00) and condition B applies to the 8 (so the entry for B should show 8.00). Instead it shows 108.00. I checked that I had the right condition set to show, and that the text only had the right condition applied. The problem persisted. The only way I have found to eliminate the problem is to accept the tracked change on the bits of text that don't behave as expected. The conditions A and B remain on the text, and then display correctly when set to show. Anyone else seen this? Anyone got any suggested workarounds? My reviewers would like to see which characters have changed, which is why we use this rather than just change bars. I don't have much experience with Track Changes, but I'm pretty sure it relies on a couple of additional under the covers conditions to mark inserted and deleted text. So when you insert 10 and apply condition A to it, it's really got two conditions applied, A and Inserted. When you tell FM to hide A, but haven't accepted the changes, the Inserted condition is still set to display. So FM displays the 10 because you're telling it to. :-) BTW, most people who use conditional text will advise you not to conditionalize on as granular a level as you're using -- it's just asking for trouble. If it were me, I'd put 10.00 and 8.00 in separate paragraphs and conditionalize the paragraphs (not that it would help with your issue, other than making what's displayed less confusing). Richard G. Hi, I think you have hit on the right answer. I don't normally touch the Preview buttons, assuming that it is set to Off. But the wrong one must have been selected when hiding conditions. RE: Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changesfacility
The simplified response I would give to anyone working with conditionalised text: always work with your conditions set to SHOW, so you can see where conditionalised text is, and can select just the bit you want without selecting markers for hidden stuff by accident. I always have done this, and hide the conditions I want hidden before doing a pagination check followed by pdf creation. Cheers, Heidi From: Fred Ridder [mailto:docu...@hotmail.com] Sent: 31 March 2010 14:29 To: Heidi Bailey; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changesfacility But do please consider the piece of advice that Richard offered in his original response to avoid conditionalize such small units of content. Conditionalizing single characters rather than the whole word (or in your case number) that contains them really makes it *much* more diffucult to maintain the document and to see when the conditions are not displaying correctly. Some of us who have had to live with highly conditionalized documents have gone so far as to always conditionalize the complete sentence when there is more than one conditional difference within the sentence. Conditionalizing single characters requires a high degree of fussiness in making selections before applying the condition. It is *much* easier to double-click a word to select the whole thing and then apply the condition. When you have 2 or 3 conditions applied to the same word, it is easy to accidentally delete the marker for one of the hidden conditions, breaking the sentence in a way that is hard to see. When you conditionalize individual characters, it is not obvious when the show/hide logic is acting up and it often requires a *very* close reading to detect the errors. In your example, 108.00 does not look like an error unless you are really familiar with the material to know that the value is out of range. Only one specific error case (the case Winfried described where neither conditions is shown) produces a fairly obvoius result, but even in the case of .00 you still have to be reading closely to see it. If you conditionalize the whole string 10.00 with condition A and the whoe string 8.00 with condition C, you will get nothing at all if neither condition shows and something clearly anomalous like 10.008.00 or 8.0010.00 if boith conditions show. -Fred Ridder Subject: RE: Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changes facility Date: Wed, 31 Mar 2010 00:35:00 -0700 From: hbai...@plxtech.com To: wr...@tycoint.com; framers@lists.frameusers.com Very interesting! Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changes facility
Thanks, but that doesn't explain why condition C shows and hides successfully, even when it also has the track changes condition applied... -Original Message- From: Combs, Richard [mailto:richard.co...@polycom.com] Sent: 30 March 2010 16:11 To: Heidi Bailey; framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changes facility Heidi Bailey wrote: > FM8p277, Windows XP. > > I have a document with 3 conditions in: call them A, B and C for ease. > I add text with the Track Changes facility on, so that reviewers can > see what's new. I don't have much experience with Track Changes, but I'm pretty sure it relies on a couple of additional "under the covers" conditions to mark inserted and deleted text. So when you insert "10" and apply condition A to it, it's really got two conditions applied, A and Inserted. When you tell FM to hide A, but haven't accepted the changes, the Inserted condition is still set to display. So FM displays the "10" because you're telling it to. :-) BTW, most people who use conditional text will advise you not to conditionalize on as granular a level as you're using -- it's just asking for trouble. If it were me, I'd put "10.00" and "8.00" in separate paragraphs and conditionalize the paragraphs (not that it would help with your issue, other than making what's displayed less confusing). Hi, I think you have hit on the right answer. I don't normally touch the Preview buttons, assuming that it is set to Off. But the wrong one must have been selected when hiding conditions. Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changesfacility
Cheers, Heidi From: Fred Ridder [mailto:docu...@hotmail.com] Sent: 31 March 2010 14:29 To: Heidi Bailey; framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changesfacility But do please consider the piece of advice that Richard offered in his original response to avoid conditionalize such small units of content. Only one specific error case (the case Winfried described where neither conditions is shown) produces a fairly obvoius result, but even in the case of ".00" you still have to be reading closely to see it. If you conditionalize the whole string "10.00" with condition A and the whoe string "8.00" with condition C, you will get nothing at all if neither condition shows and something clearly anomalous like "10.008.00" or "8.0010.00" if boith conditions show. -Fred Ridder > Subject: RE: Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changes facility > Date: Wed, 31 Mar 2010 00:35:00 -0700 > From: HBailey at PLXTech.com > To: wreng at tycoint.com; framers at lists.frameusers.com > > Very interesting! Wrong conditional text displaying when using FM Track Changes facility
Hi all, FM8p277, Windows XP. Now that is very interesting! Thank you for that snippet. The only other theory I had was that using View - Hide/Show conditionalised Text (with all files in a book window selected) might somehow delete the text. I shall test out your discovery, as that could explain it in several cases I can think of. Vielen Dank! Unable to select, conditionalise, hide/show a variable in a text frame on left of master page
Hi, Sorry for the long subject title, but this one is a bit hard to summarise. Windows XP, SP3, FM8p277. This was all re-installed in the last few days, thanks to my PC self-destructing. The problems existed before the crash and are just as annoying now. I have a vertical text frame on each master page (horizontal text frame rotated through 90Deg), which I use for watermarking. The text frame has a single paragraph (with tag Watermark applied). The paragraph contains a single-word variable (called Watermark), which says something like Draft or Approval. The variable should have condition Watermark applied, which I can then hide or show as needed. In some of my documents, and now all of my template files, The watermark text frame misbehaves, particularly when placed on the LEFT of a page (not so much when it's on the right). Experimentation by someone with a great deal of patience reveals that the problem arises if the text frame is within 2.75 inches of the left margin. The misbehaviour is manifested as: -Text frame on LEFT of page: When trying to hide conditionalised variable text, the variable is completely deleted, or the condition is removed and the text not hidden. -Text frame on LEFT of page: When trying to select the variable, you cannot single-click it to select, nor double-click it to open the Variables dialog box. You can select the whole paragraph by triple-clicking, but I usually only want to select the variable. You can select the variable (according to my patient friend) by placing the cursor before the variable, then holding dhow Shift + pressing the right arrow key. -Text frame on RIGHT of page: Works perfectly normally when it comes to selecting. However, the removal of condition and/or variable does sometimes happen. I can send anyone willing to look at it a copy of misbehaving file. But if you have any idea of what to check, please let me know. Various things have been tried (such as turning off sidehead area, changing size of text frame and paragraph text, moving text frame to where things start to work again...). All help gratefully received! Can we change the track text edit marker colours in FM8?
Hi, Having just discovered the useful track edit tool, I wonder if it is possible to change the colour/underline that the edited text is given? For example, I'd like to change the marker for inserted text from forest green to a brighter colour. I can't find anything in the FM8 user guide, nor on the internet. If anyone knows of a backdoor way to do this, please let me know!
Ctrl-Alt-u shortcut bug
Hi, Has anyone seen or got a solution to the Ctrl-Alt-u shortcut bug? When I use it, FM places a ú in front of the word following the selected text. How to make cross references in text insets work
Hi, We are starting to use text insets. The inset file has cross refs to figures or tables within the text inset. When the inset is imported by reference, these cross refs don't work. We found an article that explained how to apply hypertext commands Specify Named Destination and Jump to Named Destination to the cross refs. In theory (and in practice when using Message URL and mailto hyperlinks), hyperlinks in insets work. However, we can't get these hypertexted cross refs to work. Anyone have any ideas about how to make them work? We use Framemaker 7.2 and do not have any fancy add-ons.
