MORE SPAM TO LIST MEMBERS

2006-02-23 Thread John Huntington
I don't mean to beat this to death, but I submitted my unsubscribe
command and am just now getting time to accept the confirmation (which I
will do after sending this message).

But just a couple quick things. On January 1st, I changed email
addresses, and I have been very careful about where I've posted that
address. I have now gotten exactly >>two<< spam messages so far this
year, and both are from this Indian Framemaker spammer. I responded
each time and told him to unsubscribe me, but he continues to spam me,
and many others on this list (who responded to me). If he is this
unethical, he'll probably sell the addresses.

I just started using Framemaker this year, and I have subscribed to
exactly two online resources: this list, and Adobe's online forum.
Adobe's forum hides email addresses, this list does not (nor should
it). The most likely way this guy got my email, then, is from this
list. I'm disappointed that the leadership of this list won't take
action against this guy, so I'm sorry to go.

Thanks to all for the excellent advice everyone gave me here, and sorry
to have caused problems for anyone.

File Management Question

Sorry, my response got stuck in my "drafts" outbox so the whole thread
is pretty historical at this point. :-)

Basically, I've been doing a lot of work on a book, and I cut a bunch of
chapters. What I was calling the "data" directory is the folder where
I'm keeping all the FM files related to the book. What I want to do is
sort out that folder in some way so I can move the old, unused files to
a "dead" director. Mr. Ridder suggested that I run the update, and that
would open, close, and save each file, and then I could just do a
windows sort and move the older dated file. Unfortunately, though,
since I hadn't made any edits, only the TOC and LOF files changed. I
eventually went through and opened every file manually, changed one
character, changed it back, and then closed it, and then manually purged
out the data directory. I'd just like to do this in some more automated
way. And I did remove the files from the book from within the book
file, but they apparently just get abandoned in the folder.

Thanks!

Some questions:
1. Does the [bookfile-name].book show all the files that you deleted
from the directory or place they used to be at? Then they should
really show the files with a preceding question mark.
2. Did you use the book file to "move" the chapter files?. Then they
should update.
3. Have you checked the Numbering setting of each file in the book
file? If it is set to a specific numbering, you may have to change it
there.
4. By data directory, do you mean the book file or the folder where
you keep the folders?

Select and copy one of them to the clipboard. You may need to zoom to

Replace with nothing.

I tried that, but it won't paste anything.

Another dumb question for the list :-)

I have a book in Framemaker, with each chapter as a separate file. I've
been rearranging things, and cutting chapters. Now, my data directory
has a bunch of files that are no longer in the book. Is there some way
(or an addon or anything) that will mark the "dead" files so I can move
them to a separate directory (or any similar operation)?

Thanks!

I think not, I have been on literally 20+ lists since about 1987 and
this is now the THIRD Spam message ever I have gotten from a mailing
list. In each of those other cases, the member was disciplined or
removed. If not, it just spirals out of control.

Also, every other list (including about a dozen Yahoo Groups that I run)
munges the email addresses when posted for web consumption.

If this is not the case with this list, I am gone.

Yep, I've already gotten about 10 messages and it's about 50/50. I
personally view this as pure spam and I would think this guy should be
barred from the list. This is at best really annoying and I would
actually say it's unethical. I spend a lot of time working to avoid

That's an unrealistic attitude, John.

I spend a lot of time working to avoid
spam and if this list will allow anyone to harvest my email to send me
an unsolicited message to outsource work to India, I'm going to have to
(unfortunately) drop it.

Another Stupid Framemaker Question

2006-01-19 Thread John Huntington
Ok, for those of you following along :-) I've now got my whole book
imported, got the TOC generating, got each of the 50 chapters in a
separate file, got "Volumes"
set up to generate part numbering, etc.

Now I'm starting to see global formatting things I want to do, but I'm a
bit confused. For example, I'd ideally like to have the exact same
Paragraph Formats across every document in the book. The only way I've
figured out how to do this so far is to create the formats as I want
them in one document, and then with the Book window selected, and all
the chapter files highlighted, import those formats to all other
documents. Is there an easier way to do this?

Is there some way I could have one set of dynamic paragraph and
character formats shared by the entire book? That way, if on Chapter 23
I decide I need a new character format I could go back into Chapter 2
and use it without importing, etc.

Also, I'd like to change a Header format in one place and have it
"update all" across the whole book, but that doesn't seem to work either :-(

Thanks!

John

Stupid Formatting Question

You were both on to something.

I went through and changed the format overrides to new formats as
suggested by Mr. Gold, but (thank you Microsoft) that came out with
about 100 (literally) different "Normal" formats (Normal1, Normal2,
etc), about 10 "Heading 11" formats, etc etc.

So, I went back to the original Word document and Mr. Creamer was
exactly right--the Word styles had a space in them. I tried to rename
the Word styles, but whenever I would rename them, they would come out
"Heading 1, Heading1". This reminded me why I had moved to Framemaker
in the first place :-)

I gave up on that approach and realized that while the imported formats
like *Heading 1 and *Normal were indicated in the window whenever I
selected that text, they did not show up in the Paragraph Format
catalog, nor did they show up in any pull down lists. However, using
the Global Update Options in the Paragraph Designer, I was able to
manually type in the name of the Word format I wanted to replace into
the "All Tagged:" box, replace all the "Normal" styles with the Body
format (etc.) and that worked!

Thanks to everyone, I'm sure I will have many more questions :-)

John

Stupid Formatting Question

2006-01-15 Thread John Huntington
Given the high technical level of issues discussed on this list, I feel
stupid asking this question, but I'm stuck so I'm going to ask anyway! :-)

I'm new to Framemaker, and I have been learning it to create the third
edition of my book. On the second edition, the publisher did all the
production work, so I wrote the whole text (100,000 words) as a single,
large Word document, using Word Tables, Heading markers, etc. I've
imported that original document into Framemaker, and everything came in
surprisingly well--tables came in in tact, headings came in etc.

However, there is one problem--all the headings are coming in with an
asterisk in front of them (*Heading1) which I guess means the paragraph
format is overridden, and the overridden *Heading markers won't show up
at all in the TOC.

When I imported the document, I selected "Reformat Using Current
Document's Formats" and selected "While Importing, Remove Other Format
Overrides", but the overrides are still there.

As a test, I went through and manually selected a couple headings to
remove the format overrides, and with that everything showed up in the
TOC properly, etc. But there are hundreds of heading markings
throughout the book, and I really don't want to change them all manually.

Is there a way to globally remove all the overrides, while leaving the
heading markings intact?

I searched the help file and the manual but couldn't figure out how to
do this. Thanks!

John
