Re: [Framers] OT: Punctuation question

2019-01-08 Thread Michael Lewis
Ah. But it is necessary *sometimes*. The basis of the Oxford style is that
including it is sometimes necessary but never harmful. Its consistent omission
is often predicated on the quite false assumption that it does the same job as
"and" so need never be used alongside it. But "and" is purely conjunctive
whereas the comma can also be disjunctive.

Two points:The "Oxford style" is to include the comma, not to omit it. It was
so named because the Oxford University Press, almost alone among British
publishers, mandated it in their style guide.Secondly, as for its being
essential to avoid ambiguity, tell that to all the other British and other
publishers who don't use it, and generations of British and other writers who
have never used it.

I should have been clearer and a bit less grumpy ;-) I follow the Oxford style,
which is to omit the comma unless ambiguity is caused by doing so.

Not quite, you have to pay every month for a year = $360. Not cheap when

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Crashes

2017-05-16 Thread Michael Lewis
I blush to admit that I am still using FM 7. I used it professionally
for a long time, and produced many technical and academic texts with it,
despite the hassles of getting colleagues to deal with PDF commenting;
but as a retired person I don't need and can't justify any upgrade.
Anyway, the point is that only under Win 10 (which I hate for many other
reasons) do I have this problem: if I hold down the left mouse button
for anything that FM apparently considers "too long", FM freezes. I'm
trying to train myself to use the cursor keys more than I used to, but
it's still a pain.

I don't expect Adobe to produce a fix for FM 7, but it would be
interesting to see where the problem is coming from.

Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 130, Issue 15

2017-01-26 Thread Michael Lewis

David's post leads to some interesting questions:

1. To what extent (if at all) does a reader's "preference" reflect
"effectiveness", or comprehension?

2. It seems at least possible that fonts preferences vary according to
the purpose of reading - information or entertainment. Has this been
assessed?

3. To what extent is our ability to read, interpret, and understand a
typeface shaped by the texts we were exposed to in childhood, when we
were learning to read?

Key (old-ish) texts here are Karen Shriver's _Dynamics in Document
Design_, where she reports only on reader preference (aesthetics rather
than comprehension), and Colin Wheildon's _Type and Layout_, where he
does assess comprehension and recall, though his methodology is flawed
in some respects.

the serif with younger readers too.

Re: [Framers] Question about differentiating heading levels

2017-01-24 Thread Michael Lewis
Trouble with many commercial designs is that "design" outweighs
communication. So many graphic designers focus on "what looks nice"
rather than "what works to promote the purpose of the document".
Granted, that's at best a failure in the training of such designers, but
it does constitute a warning that "best practise" isn't always "best
practise".

It's real easy to create an ugly design. It's real hard to create a beautiful

who aren't (such as me), I've often found it useful to look for suitable
commercial designs and then emulate them. I don't mean copy, but extract the
underlying principles. Your eye will tell you what looks right and what look
weird.

I know (believe, anyway) that FM finds its natural home in the technical
communication community, and I've used it that way -- a lot -- in the past.
But now I use it for academic writing. My chief motivation in obtaining Mif2Go
has nothing to do with generating help or HTML files; I use it to interface
with EndNote, because EndNote needs nice clean RTF. I can't guess at how many
other users, or how many other listers, have similar needs. But I wonder
whether anyone else in the same boat as me has thought about whether Mif2Go
could provide a tighter EndNote interface. (Don't ask me for details; I've no
idea!)

You could always insert a Head 2 "Introduction" immediately after the Head 1 .

RE: Autonumber chapters in Frammaker 5.5 ...

2006-05-07 Thread Michael Lewis
Peter Courlis:

Need help in getting autonumbering to work...

 I am using Framemaker 5.5.

Are you setting the numbering properties for each chapter file? You can do
this at book level, by clicking on the filename then going to Format -
Document - Numbering. Or you can open the chapter file, go to the same spot
to set the numbering properties, then set the book-level properties as Read
from File. In either case, all chapters except the first need Continue
from previous file.

What I can't remember is whether 5.5 has a Chapter tab in the Numbering
dialog, or whether it's all done from the Paragraph tab.

Grope around in that general direction, and you should find what you need.
