[Framers] Moving Adobe apps to a new computer

2016-05-04 Thread Michael Norton
I'm getting a new computer and need to move my tools to the new computer. This
is being spurred by an acquisition. Anyone have any hints/advice on getting two
versions of TCS (3 and 2015), plus CS4 Web Premier moved from one computer to
another and having the licenses changed from one company name to another?

Both machines are running Windows 7, so that isn't an issue. And yes, for
various reasons, I do use applications out of each suite. I currently use two
versions of FM and RH, again for various reasons, but that could be simplified
if I have to.

[Framers] Anyone using OneDrive as a repository?

2016-03-10 Thread Michael Norton
Anyone using Microsoft OneDrive as a repository for Frame, RoboHelp, Word,
graphics, and PDF documentation files?

Looks like I've been given the task of moving from our current repository
(StarTeam) to something else, preferably OneDrive. I'm mainly using StarTeam as
a backup location, so no content management capabilities are needed. Simple
check in/check out for one to two writers should suffice. I'm not familiar with
OneDrive and maybe some of you are, any suggestions or critiques would be
welcome.

Thanks

This is true, but in some companies, you have to get past an HR or agency

I remember talking to a lady who obviously knew nothing about technical

FrameMaker and SharePoint

2015-04-08 Thread Michael Norton
We are moving from an older revision control system (StarTeam) to SharePoint
v2013. We are using unstructured Frame and will mainly use SharePoint as a
repository for our Frame, RoboHelp, Word, and associated graphics files. We are
currently on FrameMaker v10, but will be moving to v12 soon. I have the
connection set up in CMS | Configuration Manager and it seems to be working OK,
VPN willing.

Any words to the wise from people who have already done this?

Our needs are pretty basic - IT wants us off StarTeam and we just want an
accessible repository that a small number of writers (1-3) can easily get to.

So far, it seems a little slower than StarTeam and there is a 100 file upload
limitation. Several of our books have more than 100 referenced graphics files.
SharePoint doesn't seem to want to let me drag and drop folders, only files.
This will make for a tedious transition, unless I can find a way around this
limitation.

RE: FrameMaker and SharePoint

2015-04-08 Thread Michael Norton
Hi Zaeem,

Thanks for replying. I'll look at these comparisons, but I fear the PTB are
pushing this change. I'm not sure Doc will be allowed to go a separate way.

I can see some benefit in being able to check in and check out files directly
from Frame and also update dependent files. With our current system (which is
very old) everything is manual.

SVN, however, may be an option.

From: Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net) [mailto:syed.hos...@aeris.net]

Sorry to not give you answers to your specific questions, but you may want to
consider changing to another system to make it simple.

I believe that with a small number of users, free on-line versions of Git
hosted solutions are perhaps the best way to go.

For example, check out Github (www.github.comhttp://www.github.com) and
BitBucket (www.bitbucket.orghttp://www.bitbucket.org) - BitBucket is free for
up to 5 users with unlimited repositories (no file limits).

Here is a comparison of various Git hosting sites:

Hi Steve, thanks for replying.

And yes, this is primarily an IT problem but I also have a deadline looming. I

all files and I have seen no pattern so far. Just a few minutes ago it did it

. Does it occur if you save FrameMaker files in MIF (i.e. a pure text format)?

It would seem that the disk encryption is corrupting FrameMaker binaries.

Frame and disk encryption software

2015-01-14 Thread Michael Norton
Recently, our IT department put disk encryption software (WinMagic) on our
machines. Since then, several times when I have tried to open a FrameMaker v10

I can choose the Text option on the Unknown File Type dialog, but I just get an
empty Frame file. The file sizes for both the bad file and a readable copy of
that file are the same.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Re: Frame 8-compatible file format?

2015-01-06 Thread Michael Norton
Hi Lise,

In FrameMaker v12, there are two options for saving in MIF format:

MIF 12.0 (*.mif)
MIF 7.0 (*.mif)

I don't have FrameMaker v8 installed, but I would think you would want files
saved in MIF 7.0 format. I do go between FMv10 and FMv12 fairly often and that
is the format I use.

Hope this helps.

Lise wrote:

Framers,
A little googling did not clarify anything for me, so I thought I'd ask here.
I'm on Frame 8; none of the added features in subsequent releases seemed
relevant enough to me to justify upgrading (and it works fine for me on Windows
7).
The issue I have is that I need to send some manuals out for quote to be
translated, and I want to make sure that the files they send back to me, can be
opened in Frame 8. (I figured it's better to clarify upfront, rather than
chance running into issues later. I have no idea what the translation companies
are able to provide, but Murphy dictates that if I don't clarify, I'll run into
issues.)

Now, I know you can't save a file opened in Frame 12 directly as a Frame
8-compatible file, but it looks like you can save as .mif--can that be opened
in Frame 8?
According to this thread, https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1379901, there are
two different MIF versions?
What format do I need to request they return, so that I can open the translated
files, once translated?

Thanks,
Lise

Re: Page count even or no

2015-01-02 Thread Michael Norton
For our main user manuals and training guides, the PDFs are set up just like a
regular book, with odd/even layouts and an even number of pages. I use roman
numerals for the front material. As for the odd/even layouts, our design
doesn't include a scholar's margin, so it really just affects the
headers/footers - and shouldn't affect on-screen viewing to much. We feel that
while some users will view these books on-line, many users will print these
books and design them accordingly.

We also have minor documents that are typically attached to a knowledge base
article. Most of these do not have a ToC and are single-file documents. For
these documents I omit blank pages and there is no front material.

Thanks for the links Maxwell. The PDF looks interesting.

As for the HTML, I understand Responsive HTML is cool and all that and has some

this capability something requested by other Frame users or is Adobe simply
showing that it can be done via Frame?

FM 12 - Table row delete issue

2014-11-19 Thread Michael Norton
Has anyone else run into this?

1. Opened a document

2. Pasted in a table from an Outlook email (a simple 2 column/12 row
table)

3. Began reformatting the table

- Applied style

- Applied tags

- Added a header row

- Drag/drop the heading text into the new header row

- Highlighted old header row (now empty)

o If I right-click and choose Cut, the Cut Table Cells dialog appears. I
choose Remove Cells from Table and FM deletes that row. All is well.

o If I press Delete, FrameMaker hangs.

I'm guessing that the Cut Table Cells dialog is displayed, but not brought into
focus. Since I cannot get to the Cut Table Cells dialog to specify whether I
want to clear the contents of the cells or delete the cells, FM is effectively
hung and I have to kill it via Task Manager.

I'm using FrameMaker version 12.0.3.424 on a Windows 7 machine.

Theresa asked:

Is there a way to compare the content of two books? I'd accept being able to

It would be OK to compare two pdfs.

Both FrameMaker and Acrobat offer book compare options.

In Frame, choose File, Utilities, Compare Books. In Acrobat, choose View,
Compare Documents.

I would try the Frame option first. The Acrobat option notes every
formatting/placement change, which can get bothersome.

FM 12's Publish to WebHelp option

2014-07-09 Thread Michael Norton
While playing around with the new option to publish in a WebHelp format, I
notice that call-out text in an anchored frame was incorrectly converted. The
screen shot or illustration was handled correctly, as were lines from the
call-out text to the illustration, but the text itself was mostly lost. For
instance, in one case the text Click here to reset your password. came over
as C.

Has anyone else noticed this?

The tag used for call-out text is the same tag used for text inside tables -
and that text comes out ok.

Re: So Long and Thanks for the Fish

2013-10-30 Thread Michael Norton

Increasingly, authoring content is being separated from rendering it for output
(for example, with applications like Flare). In a sense, we are going full

As someone who started out in the days of WordPerfect 1.0 (for DG) and mark-up

option though and I hope to hear the reasons why that move was made. At a
previous gig, we adopted Flare as our HAT and looked into moving to it
completely. The PDF publishing capabilities we wanted were not there at that
time and there were some issues with bugs. Perhaps that has improved now. If I
remember correctly, Flare wasn't exactly cheap either.

The ability to format the text I'm working with and merge pictures I can see
and annotate into it has never hindered my ability to write. Layout and design
are part of the message I am trying to deliver.

So Long and Thanks for the Fish

Increasingly, authoring content is being separated from rendering it for output
(for example, with applications like Flare). In a sense, we are going full
circle back to the division of labor that existing in the typesetting era. That
is why there may be a revival in the LaTex world: it has always separated
authoring and rendering."

As someone who started out in the days of WordPerfect 1.0 (for DG) and mark-up

have been disappointed with Frame's progress under Adobe's tutelage, but I'd
still rather use it than any other tool out there. Flare is an interesting

RE: Engineers as authors

2013-10-08 Thread Michael Norton
I recommend...

- Creating a simple Word template - if Word is their tool of choice -
which will make it easy to import their content into Frame.

- Provide some very brief documentation on how to use this template
(use the styles, keep it plain, don't worry about ToCs, and so on)

- If you have a Style Guide, make it available to them (but don't
expect much)

- Go through a review cycle early on, where you see where there are
going with the content and you make edits to the Word doc

- Be available to answer questions and encourage/monitor progress

- Set expectations that they will be providing content which you will
then edit and publish

The first three can be done in a meeting/webex.

I've done a fair amount of this and each engineer is different. Some will do an
excellent job and will only require minor editing. Others, not so much. Some
think every word they write is sacred and you are just a formatter. Others are
happy to have you help them make their pet project look good.

In many cases, the process can help you develop an even better relationship
with an SME.

Re: Is FrameMaker 11 going down or is it a keeper?

2012-12-21 Thread Michael Norton
I've worked in two (US) companies this year and FrameMaker was the main
documentation tool used in both. The first company was medium-sized (around 300
employees) before being bought by a very large company. We were using
FrameMaker 7.2 in unstructured mode and our main output was PDF manuals. We
were also beginning to use Flare more and more. We did not feel like Flare's
PDF output capabilities were sufficient to use only Flare. Like the old
RoboHelp, Madcap is better at marketing a solution than building one.

In my current company, which is around 75 employees, we have FrameMaker v10 and
the other apps included in TCS3. This company is still transitioning from Word
to FrameMaker. There are no plans to move to TCS4 at this point.

FrameMaker seems to be working fine for us. Pod madness takes some getting used
to, but I like v10 alright. It is not as stable as the earlier versions I have
used (from v3-v8), but I still prefer it to Word, Flare, or RoboHelp. I hope to
next year look into Frame + Mif2Go for our Help needs and possibly for our
knowledge base needs.

FrameMaker works for us and should continue to do so in the near future, but I
would agree that Adobe's ownership has not been good for the Frame community.
It is far more buggy than before and the doc for it kind of sucks. At one time,
FrameMaker had great documentation and the product was rock-solid.

Using epilogue.os with Frame and Windows 7

2012-09-24 Thread Michael Norton
I recently upgraded to a Windows 7 machine and was trying to move over the
custom joboptions and epilogue.ps files I use when creating PDFs from
FrameMaker (v10). I also have Acrobat X Pro. Putting the joboptions file onto
the new machine was easy enough, less so for the epilogue.ps file.

I can copy the epilogue.ps file into my \Data directory:

C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Distiller\Data\epilogue.ps

But it looks like Distiller is only using the file in the \All Users directory:

C:\Users\All Users\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Distiller\Data\epilogue.ps

And even though I have administrator privileges and am the only user on the
machine, I cannot overwrite, edit, or delete the version of epilogue.ps in\
All Users. I did not see an option in the joboptions file that let you specify
the location of epilogue.ps, which might be nice.

So how do you get Distiller to use a customized version of epilogue.ps in
Windows 7?

Thanks.

Frame 10 XML/translation question

2011-12-03 Thread Michael Norton
Our company will be translating some manuals from English to Japanese. The
translation service only accepts HTML and XML input and outputs the result in
those same formats. I am currently using Frame 7.2. I understand Frame 10.0
works in XML.

I realize you can't give me an absolute answer, but how easy would it be to
pull the translated output (in XML format) back into Frame for publishing as
PDFs?

Are there any major issues with taking this approach?

Thanks.

Adding a PDF form to a FrameMaker manual

2011-09-10 Thread Michael Norton
I'm trying to add a Feedback form to our FrameMaker manuals. These manuals are
published as PDF files. We are using FrameMaker 7.2 and Acrobat 8.0.

I have a PDF form designed and can attach it to a PDF manual. I can also set up
a bookmark which will display the form as an attachment, but I would prefer to
pull it into the FrameMaker book and have it built in every time I print the
book. I've tried inserting the PDF form into the book file several ways, such
as an inset in an FM file or on a master page, but nothing seems to give me a
form with working fields in the resulting PDF.

Preferably, I would like to end up with a PDF manual that has a bookmark named
Send us your comments. If you click on that bookmark, you go directly to the
PDF form which you can then fill in and email to a pre-selected email address.
Since the content of the form itself will not change and since we have a large
number of manuals, I would like to make this as automatic as possible.

Is there any way to do this?

Thanks for any ideas.
