Re: master index of multiple book

2011-09-23 Thread Milton, Cynthia
I concur. In my last job I did exactly that (so engineers could find the doc
they needed easily). The uber-book contained over 300 separate docs, and
another 400-page big book as a sub-book.

When you generate the index, make sure you DO NOT UPDATE ANY NUMBERING, as
otherwise everything gets screwed up. To differentiate index entries for the
individual docs and the big book, I added a meaningful prefix to the numbering,
so the big book entries were H-pageno and the individual doc entries were
W-work instruction no.

I used normal index markers from the big book and Subject markers from the
individual docs, using the otherwise-non-functional Volume number.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, all of which I tried.

I still don't know why, but when I removed the book-within-a-book it all
worked fine. I shall investigate further, but have Plans B to Z in case I can't
find a proper solution.

I now need a lie-down in a darkened room, especially as the country will grind
to a halt tomorrow because of some wedding or other. More beer, I think.

Hi Cynthia,

Bookmarks are only created, when Generate Acrobat Data
in the print dialog is activated. Possibly this option was activated when you
printed the index but not for the large book.

Baruch advised to add GroupTitlesIOM in Format Document PDF Setup
Bookmarks. Did you select all files in the book, before you did this?

Hi Gurus

FM9, XP SP3.

I have a humungous book ( 1600 pages) with a subject index. I print to
the Adobe PDF printer.

When I print just the index, with bookmarks specified (GroupTitlesIOM),
the resulting PDF shows the alphabetic bookmarks in the expected way.

However, when I print the whole file to PDF with bookmarks specified in
exactly the same way (and with the individual chapter titles specified
as well), the result is absolutely no bookmarks at all.

Am I having a combined blonde/senior moment? Is it something to do with
file size? Do I need more beer?

Re: [OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-29 Thread Milton, Cynthia

Classification: SERCO-PUBLIC

Not just Adobe. Regardless of exchange rates, it's always been the case that
the dollar price is more or less the same numerical value as the sterling
price. Thus anything costing $100 in the US costs £100 over here (which is
sometimes twice the actual price). VAT (purchase tax) varies around Europe, but
is 17.5% here in the UK and about to rise to 20%.

Pgf numbering strangeness

2010-09-30 Thread Milton, Cynthia

Classification: SERCO-PUBLIC

Run out of brick walls.

FM9 p255, XP SP3

Single-file doc with four Sections. Sections and sub-sections numbered
1, 1.1, 1.1.1 etc.

Pgf numbering formats:

Heading1 S:n+. =0 =0 =0

Heading2 S:n.n+ =0 =0

Heading3 S:n.n.n+ =0

But I'm getting Sections 1 and 2 (with subsections), then 5 and 6 (which
should be 3 and 4). I've checked for anything hidden - nada. Pix and
tables are numbered with F:n+ and T:n+ respectively so shouldn't be
affecting anything.

Going bonkers. Any bright ideas please?

RE: Consolidated index - more

2010-07-20 Thread Milton, Cynthia

OK, so, I played around a bit more. I hope the following makes sense to
you.

To recap: the book file from which I'm generating the index contains
around 200 files and a book file, thus:

IOM (Index of Markers)
Files . . .
Book

This book file contains ordinary fm files and generated TOC, LOT, LOF
and IX files, thus:

Title
Preface
TOC
LOF
LOT
Files . . .
IX

Now, I noticed that the TOC/LOF/LOT wodge consisted of 14 pages. So I
inserted a spurious index marker in the Preface (i.e. before the
generated wodge), and regenerated the consolidated book. Bingo, the
spurious index entry had the correct page number, and markers on pages
after the generated wodge produced numbers 14 adrift from reality, as
before.

The 21-page discrepancy between the reported number of pages of the
subsidiary book in the consolidated file and the subsidiary book file is
accounted for by all the generated files, i.e. the front-wodge and the
IX file. And when I generate a PDF, the generated files in the
subsidiary book are ignored.

I can only assume that when one generates a book containing a book (so
to speak), Frame ignores the generated files in the contained book, for
some reason.

My quick-and-dirty will be to temporarily insert a 14-page file in the
subsidiary book to pad it out. Anyone have any further thoughts?

Hi All

FM9, XP.

I'm constructing a consolidated index of around 200 individual documents
and a 400-page book. I've created a book file containing the individual
docs and the book file.

I've managed to persuade it to produce an index containing the Subject
markers in the individual files (which are numbered by volume) and the
Index markers in the book (which is conventionally numbered). In the
consolidated index the Subject markers are prefixed with W and followed
by $volnum and the Index markers with H followed by $pagenum.

The Subject markers work fine, but the index markers (referencing page
numbers in the book) are 14 out - they show a page 14 before the actual
page, e.g it shows 305 when the actual page number is 319.

The book reports itself (correctly) as 376 pages. In the consolidated
book it reports as 355 pages (huh?).

Any ideas? Unfortunately I work in a tin shed and can't find a brick
wall to bang my head against.

I put $lastpagenum in the Master pages of the last file (text colour

off-list if you like.

Works a treat. Bit of a bother to set up, but once it's there it sorts

W*** is a four-letter thingy where I work. Just uttering it within my

Seriously, as far as I'm concerned, ease of use, consistency (and

dependability . . .

Depends entirely on what you want to do. YMMV.

One of my engineers came to me today having printed out a PDF I sent him

Not a dry seat in the house - the (A4) page was a tiny rectangle in the

reported being displayed at 779% of actual size. Well, roll me over and

I've checked every setting I can find and there's nothing obvious.

Good luck, Cynthia. I've forgotten all of the details, but I've had
this happen in FM 6 and FM 7, too, so we can't blame FM 9 for this one.

I'm pretty sure the settings were on the Frame side. Sorry if a bit
vague, but I'd suggest you double-check the Print Setup settings at the
book level and make sure you have A4 under Paper - Size. Hopefully,
you're printing to the Adobe PDF instance. Double-check the Adobe
settings and make sure that page size is A4 also. The other place to
check is the Page Size settings under Format - Document - PDF setup. Do
this at the book level and you can handle every chapter at once. If all
three of those spots (Print Setup, Adobe PDF Page Size, and Format Doc)
are set for A4, you should be good. If not, hopefully others on the list
will have further ideas.

HTH,
Jim

One of my engineers came to me today having printed out a PDF I sent him
(FM9p250, WinXP SP3).

Not a dry seat in the house - the (A4) page was a tiny rectangle in the
middle of the sheet. When I fired up the PDF in Reader on my laptop it
reported being displayed at 779% of actual size. Well, roll me over and
thrash me with a stick of limp celery.

I've checked every setting I can find and there's nothing obvious.
Anyone come across this before?

HTH,
Jim

Hi group

I'm trying to do the following:

Insert a message client hypertext command in file A which opens file B.
Both files will be PDF documents (yes, I use PDF for presentations
instead of PowerPoint).

I'm currently using the following command:

message openfile C:/temp/fileB.pdf

The command works but the problem is that file A closes when file B is
opened.

Does anyone know how to keep file A open?

Thanks

Revision histories - xrefs

I try to use x-refs where possible for these. That way they still point

Once upon a time in FrameMaker, Esc+g+o would show the object properties

FrameMaker, but when done on a placed graphic, nothing happens.
Furthermore, going to the Graphics menu and selecting Object
Properties also does nothing.
How do I access the properties of an imported graphic in FM9? I use this

I want to check the location of a graphic.

I use a different approach to this question. All my docs are provided to
the users as PDFs. Where they refer out to other docs I use hyperlinks
and open the referred-to docs in a new window (sometimes PDF, sometimes
Excel spreadsheet, etc.) It helps that there's a standard directory
structure, and I stipulate that the system won't work if the users try
to do their own thing (OK, herding cats through treacle, but . . .).

However it works pretty well on the whole, and satisfies my love of
crude-but-effective if elegance is too complicated. It's also easy to
maintain.

Hi Cynthia,

You are not doing anything wrong. We had the same problem. The reason
that the links do not work is that they still point to the original
location and not to the place where the text insets are. To make the
links work, you have to reset each xref to the new location.

I know that this sounds like a lot of trouble, but there is an easy
solution. Contact Rick Quatro at www.frameexpert.com. Rick has a
framescript already written that does this in a couple of seconds. It
also resets the links back to the original location if you want to
update the files. Note that you also have to buy a FrameScript licence
to run a FrameScript on your system. You can buy FrameScript for
$149.95 at Finite Matters at

Hope this helps,

Xrefs in text insets (FM9)

2009-10-20 Thread Milton, Cynthia

Classification: NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED

Thanks Diane. Perfectomundo.

Makes sense, of course, in that the same text chunk could appear in
several different container docs. Shame Adobe don't give the option,
though.

You can buy FrameScript for
$149.95 at Finite Matters at
http://www.framescript.com/index.php?q=node/77.

Hope this helps,

I have docs with text insets and quite a lot of Xrefs.

When I print the container doc to PDF, the Xrefs within the inset doc do
not convert to links.

Have I done something stupid? Or is this normal? The User Guide of FM9
sucks compared with previous ones.

Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?

Amongst other things, the Apply Master Pages thingy is great when you
have a mixture of portrait and landscape pages - makes it simple to
ensure they all stay the right way round. Saved me shedloads of hassle.

Other stuff: spreading it across multiple screens, quicker access to
frequently-used formatting thingies, stickiness in dialogs like x-refs,
and all sorts of things which reduce the number of clicks and
keystrokes.

Text inset (FM9)

2009-08-18 Thread Milton, Cynthia

Classification: NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED

I don't know if this is a bug but I can't find anything about it
anywhere else.

I have a number of docs with text insets. When I do an update, an extra
carriage return is added at the end of the inset which duplicates the
paratag of the first line of the inset. The first paratag is a section
head with a page break, so this also is duplicated. The result is an
extra empty page which cannot be deleted as FM reckons it's part of the
inset.

The only way to correct it is to delete the inset and re-import it,
which rather defeats the object. G.

Anyone know anything (please, please, gibber gibber)?

FM9 and two monitors

for something like 15 years in both Win and UNIX flavours).

As for two monitors - absolutely. More the merrier.

FM9 PDF output

Hi All from a newbie

I've just migrated fom FM7.1 to 9.0.2.

I'm trying to output a doc containing a mixture of portrait and
landscape pages. In FM7 I used Save Book As PDF and got perfect results,
complete with bookmmarks. FM9 produces a PDF with all pages portrait.
The only way I can find to get the correct output (with bookmarks etc)
is to print to PS and specify Generate Acrobat Data, then distill
manually. This sucks. Any ideas?
