Figure number updating

2006-06-19 Thread Patricia Carmel
Hi,
First of all, I panicked and it transpired that it was only in two (though
major) chapters in a five-chapter book, and not all. After I calmed down a bit,
I discovered the following:

There was a disconnect between my first page, where the first figure appeared
and the next page, where the second figure appeared, which is why the second
figure thought it was the first one. The question was why: Autoconnect was
selected and the tag letter between the frames was consistent.

Well, I don't know - the only explanation is that the material was pasted from
Word, and there must have been a massive amount of garbage screwing up the
document. My solution was to recreate the info on the first page, apply the
first page master page, then delete the corrupt first page. So far, holding my
breath, but it seems to have worked.

Thanks.

Patricia

Hopefully, the problem is due to numbering series. How is the autonumber string
defined? What other series are used in the documents? How are the captions
created?

Unfortunately, I have experienced numbering problems if the caption is a text
frame within the anchored frame. If the anchored frames are copied, and not
created from scratch, the numbering sequence eventually breaks.

But for that to happen in ALL your files seems bizarre. Unless all the files
were started from a common copy...

Perhaps with more details we can be of more help.

Totally solved the problem. I don't know what the connection with a png graphic

all the black definitions and restored the cusomized colors I'd created in the

Select all files in the book, then in the Volume field in the Numbering
Properties dialog box, type the name of the book. In the master pages of
each file in the book, select the Volume Number variable. This is an
excellent method for maintaining the correct book title whether the file

footer manually, which meant that if I imported formats from a different
book, the title was overwritten.

Sure, it's easy, but you need to load the variable once for for each
book. And you're trying to use a system variable, which is unlikely to
work and hard to do. User variables are a snap.

With the master page open (I do this in my chapter template file, but
you can certainly do it in any working chapter instead), put the cursor
where you want the title to show up.

Select Special Variable Create Variable. The name I use is DocTitle,
but it doesn't matter; the Definition is the title of the book. Click
Add. Then Insert it in the footer.

Then use Import Formats Variables to import it into all chapters of
your book. Insert it again on your cover/title pages in the regular text
flow.

Next book, edit the definition in one file and Import it again; the
change will ripple through all the files.

Variables

2006-01-30 Thread Patricia Carmel
Hi,

I tried creating a custom variable and it was because I couldn't get it
to work that I wrote to the list in the first place. The $volnum method
works beautifully - I can even set different book titles in the footers
of files that are in the same book - something I don't believe you can
do with a custom variable, unless you create more than one. In that
case, it'd be simpler just to type the book title directly into the
master pages.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to respond.

For the record, this was not the only solution that was proposed.

In our group, we use the same approach that Steve Rickaby suggested:

>To create any text that is uniform throughout a book, one way is to
>create a custom variable to hold the book's title, copy it throughout
>the book, and then insert it wherever you need it. There might be

>with a shorter version for header/footers.

We had implemented this approach years ago, long before the $volnum
system variable came into existence. We chose not to convert our
templates to use $volnum for two reasons:
--We did not want to give up the possibility of using $volnum to handle
numbering in multi-book sets. There's a good, workable alternative
for handling
the book name in headers and footers, but there is *no* good
alternative to
   $volnum in a multi-volume scenario.
--We didn't want to create an incompatibiity between old and new
templates.
Our existing practice worked well, so there was no compelling reason
to change.

Color definitions

2005-11-29 Thread Patricia Carmel
Hi Framers,

I've imported a Word document into FM and it's brought with it about 50
color definitions, all the same color. They resist deletion in the Color
Definitions dialog box. What to do - it's a clutter?

TIA

Regards,

Patricia

Framers Digest, Vol 1, Issue 6

2005-11-22 Thread Patricia Carmel
Hi Caroline,
Get an upgrade to 7.1 and you won't need any add-in for mouse scrolling.
I'm not being facetious - I tried FreeWheel and a number of other
utilities with earlier Frame versions and never managed to get them to
work. Frame 7.1 comes with this feature embedded.

I am working in XP with Frame 6.
I have downloaded and successfully used the FreeWheel application to
get my mouse to scroll in FrameMaker.
Suddenly my mouse has stopped scrolling.
I tried to reinstall FreeWheel, but have found no solution.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
What other solution can you suggest for working with a mouse in
FrameMaker?
Thanks

What about:

@ editing fontlists on UNIX platforms
@ inserting tables into MML files
@ specifying Distiller parameters with PDFmark operators in
PostScript flows
@ hacking FM 5.5.6 Beta for Linux so it will continue to run
beyond
its expiry date

I have to say, what really springs to mind is "Frame-opoly", maybe for
the number of times I personally would end up in jail.

Subject: PDF'd colored figures from FM to B/W?
To:
Message-ID:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="windows-1255"

HI Everyone,
Does anyone have a clue why the following happens?

I have an FM file with a colored PDF figure (imported by Ref). (Don't
ask why I have the PDF figures and not tif or something more suitable,
currrently, that's what the client has).
The FM file looks fine.
Then, after I PDF the FM file (with the PDF figure/s) in it, my PDF
figures come out in black and white, but not colored. The rest of the
PDF is fine, including the other fig's (tif or eps or other).
I'm running FM 6 on Window 2000, acrobat 6 and/or 7 were used to create
the PDF with the same job options on all apps.

Any clues?
Thanks,
Orly.

With respect to anchored frame properties on a reference page, this is a

known problem described at
