Interesting to read the responses so far! To me, the instructions are ambiguous in one regard - and people are interpreting things differently from me. At first blush, I read it as "remove the covers from the supervisor" and "remove the covers from the nodes". And, NOT as "remove the covers from the supervisors" and "remove the nodes". This needs clarity for sure. When in doubt, be pedantic, as far as I am concerned. Split into two instructions if needed. So, version B reflects the instructions more accurately, I think? BTW, tor me, the grammar in "before proceeding further" is redundant. This should be simply "before proceeding". Could be all done as " Remove the covers from the supervisor and remove all nodes before proceeding". Both sentences are ambiguous, but the most likely meanings are that A. instructs the reader to remove all the covers from the supervisor and from the nodes. That all depends on your "style protocol", and also the region in which you are located. Some companies insist that abbreviations follow sound rules, where if the first letter sound is vowel, then 'an' is used. But then they use it inconsistently. For example: I would say "a LWT production". But I have seen an end-credit on a TV programme as "an LWT production". Would do say: "a STV employee"? ; or "an STV employee"? or how about: "a NUJ member"? ; or "an NUJ member"? I go by the theory that if the unabbreviated version doesn't require 'an', then the abbreviation should not. Actually, all of you are wrong. This cable can likely connect to a lot of things, including RS-485 devices if it has the usual RJ-45 Ethernet plug on the business end. If so, it can easily be connected to other devices, such as standard Ethernet switches and routers, but it would not function properly. Even if it has another type of connector, it's probably better to just describe what to do with it. Assuming you're writing this sentence as a step in a series of instructions, just say this: "Cable X should be connected to the RS-485 port on Device Y." If you just want to describe the nature of the cable, then try this: "This is an RS-485 signal cable." In either example above, it's clear that the cable and the signal on it complies with the RS-485 standard at least well enough to function properly. Dennis ... There's nothing wrong with "RS-485-compliant." The first hyphen is part of the noun "RS-485," the second forms a phrasal adjective. This isn't really grammar, it's an arbitrary punctuation rule that varies from one style guide to another. Some might use en dashes instead of hyphens. Are you sure you want "connects to" rather than simply "connects"? You're remembering it wrong. If it were all in front of the word devices, you'd need the hyphen. If you're still not comfortable, you could try: This cable connects to devices that are compliant with the RS-485 standard. I didn't look to see if RS-485 was a standard. If it is, then "compliant" is definitely a better choice.
