They way I insert screen captures is to set my screen capture program to
automatically save each file to specific location, move the file to a
subfolder of where the docs are, right click on the file and select Copy
Path to Clipboard,  insert the file using ALT+f,i,f and paste the path to
the file. I find this to be relatively fast.

Copy Path to Clipboard is a free utility that you can find with a google
search. (Actually there are several.) I find the Copy Path to Clipboard
utility saves me a lot of time.

Thank you for everyone's replies.

Micheal, thank you for mentioning the Snipping Tool. This is the first I'd 
heard of it and it seems handy.

Robert, the SnagIt plugin streamlines and partially automates taking and 
inserting a screen capture. 

It lets me:

1.  In FM, select a graphic frame and click SnagIt > Perform a SnagIt 
Capture.

2.  SnagIt minimizes FrameMaker, takes the capture, and opens the Save As 
dialog.

3.  I name and save the file.

4.  Snagit automatically opens FM's graphic import dialog. 

RoboScreenCapture adds an FM menu item to launch the tool.

I still have to:

1.  In FM, click File > Launch > RoboScreenCapture.

2.  Manually select the screen I want to capture.

3.  Manually go back to RoboScreenCapture.

4.  Click capture and take the capture.

5.  Click Save.

6.  Name and save the file. (Although it does not always use the name I 
specify.)

7.  Manually go back to FrameMaker.

8.  Select the graphic frame and click File > Import > File.

My huble apologies, I thought what you wanted was to see a copy of your
specific BIOS. I wasn't aware you wanted to go in and manipulate it. When
our engineers work on BIOS, they do not work with it on a live system. What
the engineer did yesterday was to capture/copy the complete BIOS of the
system they want to modify, go to another stand-alone computer and and
display a static copy they could work on/in, off-line.

Sounds like Bill had the only workable answer so far (in yesterday's digest), 
taking the video out of the machine into another one.

I wondered if you had any sort of BIOS emulator, or even just BIOS mockup, for 
your specific BIOS. Of course, BIOS emulators are used for hacking, so 
searching for one and trusting to run one on your computer is far from simple. 
Maybe contact the BIOS manufacturer (or look in their docs for images you can 
crib).

The only other thought I had was to recreate the BIOS screen, which should just 
be a lot of ASCII characters of different colors, but that might be difficult 
if you have lots of different screens.

Thanks Andy. I think looking for the MFTR docs and cribbing screenshots is 
probably the best way to go. I did that with VMWare ESXi which installs in a 
DOS/BIOS type atmosphere. I found a PowerPoint presentation on VMWare's website 
which had beautiful screen captures. I cribbed most of them!

Route your PC's video feed to a 2nd PC that's up and running, have the
1st PC's boot screen visible in a shell window, and capture as you
go.Your IT admins should be able to help with this as they should be
troubleshooting servers like this from their desktops or a dedicated
console.

Okay. But I am still a bit unsure of how this is done.

I don't know of any way to use the BIOS setup screens from a command prompt 
from inside Windows ... certainly not on the same machine!

Basically, when the BIOS is being changed/updated (upon a fresh boot up 
generally) the Windows OS is not running. So, there is no Command Prompt 
capability available either.

Would your software engineers elaborate on this a bit - if they don't mind 
being bugged a teensy bit more? Are they viewing the BIOS executing on a 
different machine (like was suggested by Bill Swallow) perhaps?

Click on the Start button, and then click on Run.



When you get the Run box, type cmd and press Enter.







You?ll get something like this:







You need to get back to the root directory, C:. Type cd\, and press Enter.







Now type wmic bios get /format:list, and press  Enter again. That will show
you a great deal of information about your BIOS.

Okay. But I am still a bit unsure of how this is done.

I don't know of any way to use the BIOS setup screens from a command prompt 
from inside Windows ... certainly not on the same machine!

Basically, when the BIOS is being changed/updated (upon a fresh boot up 
generally) the Windows OS is not running. So, there is no Command Prompt 
capability available either.

Would your software engineers elaborate on this a bit - if they don't mind 
being bugged a teensy bit more? Are they viewing the BIOS executing on a 
different machine (like was suggested by Bill Swallow) perhaps?

Hi, Lea.

Thanks much, but this is not the same as the screen where the actual BIOS 
parameters and settings are being changed - that is quite a different beast.

In the distant past (not recently), I used a video capture card for this 
purpose. Basically, when on the BIOS screens on a PC, the graphics output (a 
VGA resolution) was fed to a card on another system in-line with the monitor 
(pre-LCD days!). This card captured video images. This was a pain, of course!

I was hoping that the software engineers that Gary knows, have a great solution 
to this! :)

most smoothly for me; has a slew of options; and has a toolbar that
integrates cleanly with Frame, so you can do the screen shot and import in
one action from with in FM.

reply is whether anyone has tried Cropper? I've used it for a while, and for

good editing options.
If you want to go the free route, MWSnap is the best free one I've seen

All of the posted options will work, but if you want better control over
your captures, SnagIt (www.textsmith.com) is probably in the Cadillac class.
For less than $50, it is a steal.

Another inexpensive, and good, option is Gadwin Print Screen Pro
(www.gadwin.com). You can buy the latest version for less than $25. They
also advertise a freeware version as well. You might try
www.freewarehome.com for the freeware version.

Sorry about this post hitting hitting the list today. I actually sent it last 
Thursday, a little while before Lea Rush's post on the same subject hit the 
list. I was one of those that Richard Combs mentioned, whose posts weren't 
reaching the list. That seems to be fixed now.

Anyhow, I have the info I needed and I am currently trying the SnagIt demo and 
so far it is working well.

most smoothly for me; has a slew of options; and has a toolbar that
integrates cleanly with Frame, so you can do the screen shot and import in
one action from with in FM.

I got many recommendations for SnagIt on my recent question. My question in
reply is whether anyone has tried Cropper? I've used it for a while, and for
anything but open menus, it works nicely for me.

good editing options.
If you want to go the free route, MWSnap is the best free one I've seen 
so far.
