I was thinking that perhaps it would be possible to create rules that
define the variable suitably for each doctype, and in each specific
context, within a document set, if one was using structured FM. However, in

If you don't want to update all the variables, create a file
containing only the variable(s) you want to update and import that.

You can update a variable in all .fm files in a .book with a single

Yes, but that presupposes that you want *all* the variables from the source
file. But in my case, I have different variables in different FrameMaker
templates (for frontmatter, ToC, chapters), with only some variables,
You can update a variable in all .fm files in a .book with a single import.

You have to define it, you have to check it on a few files, you have to
load the three books, you have to replicate t to the books, you have to
copy to the files and you have to check that nothing went wrong.
I've been using Leximation's BookVars utility,

FWIW, for me, variables work best for this purpose ... that way, an
occasional search and replace (perhaps at the end) works wonders.

What if you find and replace foo\x20bar with foo\x11bar? or foo|bar
with foo\x11bar?

I have a 2-word product name that I don’t want to break across lines. I know
that I could always use a non-breaking space between the words to prevent line
breaks. But that’s hard to remember to do all the time. And the se
