Structured FM font issue ; char tag applied but format is not being applied WAS: Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-23 Thread Craig Ede
This might be the perfect time for this question:

In a structured xml document we've defined an element called uni that is used
to contain glyphs that are known to exist in Arial Unicode MS. Most of the rest
of the document text is in Arial. We have the uni element mapping to a
character tag called unicodeFont that is defined to change the font family to
Arial Unicode MS and set the Weight and Variation as Regular.

When the xml is brought into Framemaker, all the uni elements end up as
Arial, many of which then show as question marks, yet they are tagged with the
correct character format. If we select one and change the family to Arial
Unicode MS and update all, all the characters become what we expect.

If anyone can explain why these are not coming in as Arial Unicode MS as they
should, I would greatly appreciate it. Our italics formatting uses the same
strategy, and it works. Why would the Font Family be different.

Thanks.

Craig

type it in the status bar.

If you're using a Unicode font, 097 is wrong. Use one of the methods

Or just cut and paste from the browser test page that links to.

Hi Nancy,

If you look closely at the table, you'll see that the alpha symbol appears
in the Symbol font column. In other words, Adobe/Frame is advising that you
enter ANSI 097 (for a) and apply the Symbol font. So you understood just
fine, you just missed the last step. At the end of the week, that's
understandable!

RE: Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-19 Thread Fred Ridder
The table that contains the ANSI 097 - lower-case alpha mapping is in the
section titled Symbol and ZapfDingbats character sets and the lower-case
alpha character and character name are in the column of the table headed
Symbol set: graphic and name. What this tells you is that this character
mapping applies *only* to the Symbol font. This method--relying on the
character mapping of a specific font--is the old, pre-Unicode way of
implementing special characters. The rightmost columns of the same table tell
you that the same ANSI code will produce an outlined, 8-petal floral dingbat if
the character is formatted as ZapfDingbats.

Unless you have a specific requirement to avoid Unicode (e.g., a need to
produce MIF files that are compatible with FM versions prior to v8), it is
generally better to reference special characters by their Unicode hex code,
which is (theoretically, at least) universal in any Unicode font that supports
the codepage that contains the character.

Where did you get that 097 code point? Decimal 097 (hex 0061) is actually the
code point for a Latin lower-case a, and perhaps the instruction you cite

Greek alphabet to the corresponding Latin alphabet code points and yields an

But if you're using a Unicode font that supports the appropriate codepage, you

Subject: Can't enter alpha character in text

Hi, all. I use FM 10 on a Windows 7 system. I am wasting way, way too much
time trying to accomplish a simple thing: I am trying to insert a lower case
alpha (looks like a fish, or a lower-case a) into text. The key code
Numlock-alt-097, provided in the FrameMaker 9 special character set does not
work (it comes out as an "x"). I have gone cross-eyed trying to find the
character in the Character Palette, which does not seem to provide a way to
search for the character. If anyone can solve this annoyance for me, I will be
very grateful. --Nancy

Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-19 Thread Lin Sims
Hi Nancy,

If you look closely at the table, you'll see that the alpha symbol appears
in the Symbol font column. In other words, Adobe/Frame is advising that you
enter ANSI 097 (for "a") and apply the Symbol font. So you understood just
fine, you just missed the last step. At the end of the week, that's
understandable!

Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-19 Thread Fred Ridder
The table that contains the ANSI 097 <-> lower-case alpha mapping is in the
section titled "Symbol and ZapfDingbats character sets" and the lower-case
alpha character and character name are in the column of the table headed
"Symbol set: graphic and name".

In fact, if you read "FrameMaker 9 character sets" on page 4 of that PDF
instead of jumping to the tables in the "Support for FrameMaker 7.x character
set" section, you'll see information about how to enter Unicode characters, and
it mirrors what Fred posted earlier.

Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-19 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hmmm ? do you have the symbol font installed? The symptom you describe is what
generally what I see happen when a font is not available to FM ? it just
displays the base character (?a? in this case).

Because, I just tested it in FM and it worked fine for me!

Of course, if you are using Unicode fonts, then it is better to use the Unicode
value for the alpha character rather than an ?a? in the symbol font. I based my
response (i.e., using 097) from your original question. J

Hi, all.

Well, life turned out to be simpler than I'd feared.

(Syed, I didn't get the result you describe. As you stated, Alt-097 produces a
lowercase a (in Arial, anyway). When I switch it to Symbol, I got a small
uppercase A in what looks like a serif font.)

However, I copied and pasted my source text from a Word file into NotePad. The
symbol came through. I then copied and pasted it into FrameMaker. The symbol
came through again!

So I'm all set for now. Gawd, if I never had to struggle with another font
issue, I would die happy.

 Thanks, everyone. Happy Friday!

Alt-097 is simply the character lower-case ?a?. Enter it, highlight it and then
set it to the symbol font (using the character designer preferably!) and it
will show you what you want.

Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-19 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
FM 9 and FM 10 should work identically in regard to _this_ font issue, so no
need to worry about that in this case. :)

Most importantly, from that link document, on page 13, it shows that you need
to use the Symbol font to get an alpha (for the value 097).

Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-19 Thread Robert Lauriston
Are you sure there's an alpha in the font you're using? You can
inspect it with Windows' Character Map utility. It will indicate the
key sequence to type it in the status bar.

If you're using a Unicode font, 097 is wrong. Use one of the methods
documented here:

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/3b1/index.htm

Or just cut and paste from the "browser test page" that links to.

Structured FM font issue ; char tag applied but format is not being applied WAS: Can't enter alpha character in text

2013-07-19 Thread Craig Ede
This might be the perfect time for this question:

In a structured xml document we've defined an element called that is used
to contain glyphs that are known to exist in Arial Unicode MS. Most of the rest
of the document text is in Arial. We have the element mapping to a
character tag called unicodeFont that is defined to change the font family to
Arial Unicode MS and set the Weight and Variation as Regular.

When the xml is brought into Framemaker, all the elements end up as
Arial, many of which then show as question marks, yet they are tagged with the
correct character format.

Thanks.

Craig
