RE: User's manual vs. User manual

2015-03-16 Thread Tim Pann
Gemeinschaftsgeful is a beautiful word. Even more off topic, my last name,
Pann, as best I can estimate, is from Panne, which means mechanical breakdown.

Why "mechanical breakdown" would be such a short word in German rather than a
long concatenation of strung-together words I don't know, but it is what it is
and I am apparently it.

We are getting truly off topic, but my favorite German compound is
'Gemeinschaftsgefül' (if I have spelled it correctly). It's a real word, taken
from Adlerian psychology, and is rather lovely. It means, as best I know, 'a
spontaneous feeling of unity with the whole of Mankind'.

Which I get a bit of from this group.

To make this e-mail a bit more on-topic, in the UK at least I have never come
across 'User's Manual', only 'User Manual' or 'User Guide'.

We use User's Manual. User's Manual is the manual for the User. How do explain
the name User Manual? If it means the same thing, isn't it missing the
"apostrophe s"?

Subject: English will become official European Language.

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be
the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the
other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English
spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan
that would become known as 'Euro-English'.

In the first year, 's' will replace the soft 'c'. Sertainly, this will make the
sivil servants jump with joy. The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of 'k'.
This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome
'ph' will be replaced with 'f'. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expected to reach
the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent 'e' in the language is

Indeed! :)

Reminds me of the time I was helping a fraternity brother (fluent German
speaker) translate a highly technical document from German to English for his
summer job and we encountered this (or some similar) word:
"SchwebendeElektroMagnetischenFeld" and that was one of the simpler

The translation we provided in English was "Levitating Electro-Magnetic Field".
The word "Schwebende" means something else I think, but the context was MagLev
trains, so "Levitating" seemed better to me! :)

I have never forgotten this story even though it has been 40 years now. I ended
up sudying German for two semesters the year after that summer - needed it as a
foreign language requirement.

It's easier to avoid that fuss and just called it "User Manual".

In German they get around this kind of thing by making compound nouns, so you'd
have the equivalent of "Usermanual"  (Benutzerhandbuch...?), but English
prefers to leave a space.

RE: User's manual vs. User manual

2015-03-16 Thread David Artman
We avoid this issue by naming books after their functional scope:
'Widget' Installation
'Widget' Operation
'Widget' Administration
(etc)

The thinking being (a) we avoid this whole thread, (b) we don't have to superfluous terms like "manual" or "guide" that state the obvious, and (c) end users typically have a functional domain and, as such, only want/need content that addresses their work. Installation is typically one-time, perhaps not even done by the customer; Operation is day-to-day routines; Administration is typically one-time plus regular maintenance and infrequent adjustments (e.g., new regulations) or additions (e.g., new users due to new employees). Also, a given site might require several Operation manuals but only one Admin manual.

I realize this is more than you asked for, but there's more to consider than just (bad) use of possessive.

We use User’s Manual. User’s Manual is the manual for the User. How
do explain the name User Manual? If it means the same thing, isn't
it missing the "apostrophe s"?

Without getting into a grammar argument best left to a staff meeting where
everyone has had too much coffee, I would agree with Andrew on the Best
Practice way to name manuals/books -- that's my preference too.

But disagree with him on the nouns -- I think all those he listed are or
could arguably be compound nouns, not a singular noun/noun our
adjective/noun pair.

RE: User's manual vs. User manual

2015-03-14 Thread Craig Ede

"User", in this case, is a limiting adjective, like butterfly in "butterfly
migration".
I prefer that to the possessive adjective "User's".

In my mind, one is limiting the scope of the manual not identifying its
possessor.

My own preference is to name the thing for WHAT it is rather than FOR WHOM it
is:

Quickstart Guide
Installation Guide
Reference Manual
Operating Manual
Instruction Manual

Or be even more specific:

Using the Zipchip 5000
Guide to the QZ190
IBM System/360 Principles of Operation
The Tektronix 465 Oscilloscope

RE: User's manual vs. User manual

2015-03-13 Thread VLM Tech Subs
“User” is a noun. Nouns do not modify nouns; adjectives—and articles, if you
have a more traditional view of the Parts of Speech—modify nouns.

Ergo … è User’s Manual, User’s Guide, user’s mannerisms, user’s fork, user’s
eraser, user’s banana, etc. Of course, one could choose “Usage Manual”, or just
plain, old, run-o’-the-mill “Manual”. But then there could be—and often used to
be—User’s Guide/Manual, Reference Manual, and more.

One solution to this mind-numbing conundrum might look like this:

Getting Started Guide
User’s Manual
Reference Manual
Shortcuts (often a card or the like)
Developer’s Guide (wouldn’t say “Developer Guide” … right?)
SDK Reference [Guide/Manual]
Scripting Reference [Guide/Manual]

I like to think in terms of systems. :)

Bottom line: At every opportunity, preserve our language. For these days, if we
don’t, not many others will.

IMO, that was at least three cents worth, what with inflation and all … :)

Best regards,
Elchanan

I find the other option awkward to say as well as awkward looking.

I agree. If you use the possessive version, is it going to be "User's Manual"
or "Users' Manual" ? Too messy.
