Saving back from FM v11 to FM v9

2014-01-16 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Karen,

A few years ago while I was working for translation agencies, this would happen
with Russian fonts, due to lack of Unicode support in FrameMaker 7. As I
recall, our linguistic engineers had some utilities for converting Cyrillic
characters back to non-Unicode font layouts. The main problem is FM 7's lack of
Unicode support.

Thank you for responding. The files were in 8 different languages and the
Russian files were all in question marks.

We had a situation where our SDL (translation software) version had to be put
to a FM ver 7 mif (which does not recognize Unicode) because SDL did not
recognize FM11 mif. A while ago SDL advanced to recognize FM 11 mif. I didn't
know and one of the Framers informed me to save file to FM11 mif, open mif in
FM ver9 and save to .fm. It worked! Caution...make sure you either
distinctively name the different versions or put them in differently named
folders/directories.

I would like to add, you have to delete the FM 11 book file and create a new
book file in FM9, and always open the file from within the proper FM version.

Love our Framers...

Thanks everyone. Job done on time.

What language is this file in? This sounds a bit like the pre-Unicode situation
where non-ASCII languages needed a custom font to be displayed correctly.

2014-01-15 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Karen,

you might also try the FM 11-mif format. FM 9 seems to open these files,
and probably thus the font information will be correct.

(In any case, FM 9 should be patched to its last version, as the support
for the FM 7.2 "not Unicode" characters was added very late.)

Why this once worked but not now... I have no idea.

Best regards -

Hi everyone,
Yep, got a problem.
Customer using FM 11 wants some files saved back to FM Ver 9. Has always worked
before not now. Using Times New Roman font. Individually saved FM 11 as .mif 7
- then opened .mif 7 in FM 9 and resaved as .fm for FM 9. Open the new FM 9
.fm file through FM9 and it opens the file. This time the file shows up in
question marks. Have redone it 7 times results are same. Did I miss something...
Anyone else having this issue?

Thank you in advance for your efforts.
