FYI – FrameMaker XML Author 12 is a separate product. It is possible to edit
preferences in FULL FrameMaker 12 to have the UI and functionality of FrameMaker
XML Author 12. This new product

Thanks everyone. Actually, I contacted Adobe "support" (cough) and all they
could tell me was that it can "save as" and "import" XML. That didn't seem
right so, after posting this, I searched a little further and found the XML
mode in FrameMaker.

You need to switch to structured mode to edit XML files.

Yes .. FrameMaker works directly with XML (has since FM7.1).
FM11 (and 12) even have a "code view" mode that lets you edit the XML
markup directly.
