All your files are set to Double-sided, first page Right. And all your files coincidentally contain an even number of pages except for App. B and C (last file in the book), which have only one page of content each. You don't see any blank pages in any of the files other than App. B because they already have an even number of pages of content, or (in the case of the one-page App. C) no file following. But if App. B starts on page 17 and App. C starts on page 19, FM has no choice but to make the page count of App. B even by adding a blank page 18 when you update the book. FM changes the dialog box setting accordingly. If you don't want the back of App. B's single page to be blank, you have to set App. C to start on Next Available, not Right. The setting "Delete Empty Pages" would be more easily understood if it were called "Delete Unnecessary Empty Pages." The purpose of the setting is to handle the situation where the addition of content has first increased the number of pages required to hold the flow, and deletion of content has subsequently reduced the number of pages required. When you add content, FM automatically adds pages, but when the content shrinks, FM does *not* automatically delete pages left empty. Hence there's the option when saving to delete such (unnecessary) blank pages. But as in your App. B, sometimes blank pages are *necessary* to meet the requirement of double-sided and/or first page Right. Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick (Alison Craig)
Have you tried setting it at the book level and NOT declared a first page start for the file? Many times I see this issue when files are set to delete empty pages but have a RIGHT start page. Set the start to next available. RE: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick (Alison Craig)
Yes, I set this at the book level with 1st side page set to Next Available. Chapter 2, and Appendices A, B and C all have the same settings and they all behave except App B. (App C is also a single page.) Even though I use Conditional Text, there is less than one page of text in each file even with all Conditions visible, so I can't see that Conditions would cause this. And the end of flow tag is visible on the correct page. A MIF wash didn't help - and neither did rebuilding the file based on App C (which works fine). I've tried everything - now I need to release this stupid thing so I'll have to fudge and work on a solution later (I use version control, so I'll go back and see if I can find a version that worked then update the content). Thanks for everyone's help. If I have an "aha!" moment that I think is worth passing on, I'll let everyone know. Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick (Alison Craig)
HI Alison, One thing I find that usually helps, apart from everything everyone else suggested (i.e. the pagination issues) is to first save the file and then run the Format> Page Layout> Apply Master Pages to the file with the extra pages. This usually solves the problem, especially if I got the extra pages after hiding some conditions. Usually, Save, deletes the extra pages, but not when special Master pages are used. Lastly, if nothing else works, then why don't you just use the Special>Delete Pages option. Just make sure that there is really nothing on the empty pages. Verify this by viewing the end-of-file marker on the last page that you're *not* deleting. RE: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick (Alison Craig)
Hope this helps, Orly. -- Message: 3 Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2012 16:12:11 -0700 From: Alison Craig To: "framers@lists.frameusers.com" Subject: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick Message-ID: <17474827509158478ee10bc6b977a3e30b99611...@exchange.ultrasonix.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" FM 9 Version: 9.0p255 Unstructured OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit The attached booklet is giving me fits (I've emptied the files of content, but left "placeholders" so the layout is identical to the booklet with content). The problem is Appendix B. No matter what I do, I can't get the Pagination option Delete Empty Pages to stick. I've tried at both the book and file level. I've used Special > Delete Pages. I've imported Page Layouts and Document Properties from a file that does work. But it never sticks. I even tried recreating the file by copying Appendix C over Appendix B, then copying in new content and re-adding the file to the book. That didn't fix it either. Whenever I Update the file it always reverts to Make Page Count Even. Does anyone have any suggestions? Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick
Allison, When I have a Frame file that is doing inexplicable things, I save it as a MIF file and look at the code there. I tend to see an entry that scrolls across 5 lines and contains gibberish. Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick
Oftentimes, you don't even need to find and delete the gibberish in the MIF manually. Simply saving the file to MIF and then converting the MIF back to FM binary (the so-called "MIF wash") will often take care of a problem of this type thanks to the MIF import filter, which is designed to ignore anything in the MIF file that the given version of FrameMaker doesn't fully understand (such as features implemented in a newer version of Frame). Have you already done a MIF wash, Alison? -Fred From: gillian.fl...@nexenta.com To: Alison.Craig at ultrasonix.com; docudoc at hotmail.com; robert at lauriston.com; framers at lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2012 00:50:01 + Allison, When I have a Frame file that is doing inexplicable things, I save it as a MIF file and look at the code there. If you open a file independently, you will only see the Left and Right options, because "Next Available" depends on having something preceed the file in question; you can only set the behavior that will apply if you print that one file by itself. -Fred Ridder > From: Alison.Craig at ultrasonix.com<mailto:Alison.Craig at ultrasonix.com> > To: robert at lauriston.com<mailto:robert at lauriston.com>; framers at > lists.frameusers.com<mailto:framers at lists.frameusers.com> > Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2012 16:28:39 -0700 > Subject: RE: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick > > I've set it to that (at the book level) but occasionally I lose this info as > well and it changes to Read from File. > > Alison > > > > -Original Message- > From: robert.lauriston at gmail.com<mailto:robert.lauriston at gmail.com> > [mailto:robert.lauriston at gmail.com]<mailto:[mailto:robert.lauriston at > gmail.com]> On Behalf Of Robert Lauriston > Sent: Friday, July 13, 2012 4:27 PM > To: framers at lists.frameusers.com<mailto:framers at lists.frameusers.com> > Cc: Alison Craig > Subject: Re: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick > > In the Pagination dialog, is 1st Page Side set to Next Available? > ___ > > > You are currently subscribed to framers as DocuDoc at > hotmail.com<mailto:DocuDoc at hotmail.com>. > > Send list messages to framers at lists.frameusers.com<mailto:framers at > lists.frameusers.com>. > > To unsubscribe send a blank email to > framers-unsubscribe at lists.frameusers.com<mailto:framers-unsubscribe at > lists.frameusers.com> > or visit > http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/docudoc%40hotmail.com > > Send administrative questions to listadmin at frameusers.com<mailto:listadmin > at frameusers.com>. RE: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick
By way of clarification, you need to look for the "Next Available" setting in the file *following* the one that appears to have the pagination ptroblem. If the following chapter is set to start on a right (recto, odd-numbered page) page rather than Next Available, it will force an empty left (verso) page in the *preceding* chapter if that chapter ends on a right (recto) page. Also noet that you can ony see (and set) the "Next Available" option when accessing the pagination properties from the book file. If you open a file independently, you will only see the Left and Right options, because "Next Available" depends on having something preceed the file in question; you can only set the behavior that will apply if you print that one file by itself. -Fred Ridder > From: alison.cr...@ultrasonix.com > To: rob...@lauriston.com; framers@lists.frameusers.com > Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2012 16:28:39 -0700 > Subject: RE: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick > > I've set it to that (at the book level) but occasionally I lose this info as > well and it changes to Read from File. > > Alison > > > > -Original Message- > From: robert.lauris...@gmail.com [mailto:robert.lauris...@gmail.com] On > Behalf Of Robert Lauriston > Sent: Friday, July 13, 2012 4:27 PM > To: framers@lists.frameusers.com > Cc: Alison Craig > Subject: Re: Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick > > In the Pagination dialog, is 1st Page Side set to Next Available? > ___ > > > You are currently subscribed to framers as docu...@hotmail.com. > > Send list messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com. > > To unsubscribe send a blank email to > framers-unsubscr...@lists.frameusers.com > or visit > http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/docudoc%40hotmail.com > > Send administrative questions to listad...@frameusers.com. In the Pagination dialog, is 1st Page Side set to Next Available?
Can't Get "Delete Empty Pages" to stick
FM 9 Version: 9.0p255 Unstructured OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit The attached booklet is giving me fits (I've emptied the files of content, but left "placeholders" so the layout is identical to the booklet with content). Yay, the list is back! I've missed you guys. :-) Thanks to Michelle, Brad, and Eric for persevering to fix the problem. The KB article you cited addresses only one reason for empty pages not deleting (and it's not the most common reason). More than likely, FM won't delete them because it can't while complying with your pagination settings. I assume your FM documents are double sided and in a book. If chapter 1 ends on a right-hand page, but chapter 2 has 1st Page Side set to Right (which is a common way of setting up books), then FM has to add an empty left-hand page to chapter 1 (every page has to have a front and back, so a right-hand page can't follow a right-hand page). You don't specifically say so, but I'm guessing your problem files are In the book file. Book file pagination settings always trump component file settings. So if the files are in a book the pagination of any given file is affected by the file following it, in particular the starting page. And that's probably what you're missing. This means that if your Chapter 1 has one page and you set it to Delete empty pages in the book file, but the Chapter 2 file is set to start on a right-hand page, a filler page is likely to be inserted into Chapter 1 so that Chapter 2 can start on a right-hand page. In the book file, I would guess all or most of the files are still set to start on a right-hand page rather than "Any" or "Next Available." Other possibilities are hidden text or text frames and a few other things, but those are less likely than the pagination settings. Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "...
