Re: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker
It would appear that EPUB standard involves an XML standard, in which case you could very well use FrameMaker in Structured mode. Re: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker
If you end up having to switch from (presumably unstructured) FrameMaker, I'd suggest switching not to InDesign but to DITA to accomplish your goals. You can leverage your group's existing FM knowledge by still using FM to create your PDFs, but with DITA you are no longer locked into one company's proprietary format, and you can take advantage of newer technologies and deliverable types in the future without having to change formats again. Re: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker
Hi Rich, You can use FrameMaker as your source files. You'll need to go through ePublisher Pro or MIF2GO to get the output you want. It's non-trivial (read, a huge PITA) to get everything working, but it can be done. Here's some general information on ePub issues: http://www.scriptorium.com/2010/09/how-to-succeed-in-epub-building-with-really-trying/ Good luck. I don't think FM can create them directly - they have to go through the Tech Comm. Suite to RH8 to be created there (as far as I know). The newly demoed FM10 may be able to though. -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of ri...@inficon.com Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 2010 2:21 PM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker The CEO of my company has asked that I look into eBooks and the EPUB standard. RE: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker
Hi Richard, If you look at the EPUB datasheet PDF, you will see that EPUB is an XML-based file format designed to reflow text according to screen size. Since EPUB is XML-based, you should be able to produce output from FrameMaker that can be converted to EPUB format. As far as tools, you can look at Webworks EPublisher (I think that's what they call it now), or possibly Mif2Go. If you are using structured FrameMaker, you may be able to use XSLT to transform your documents to the EPUB format. I am sure there is more to it than I am describing, but my point is that you don't have to switch to InDesign to produce EPUB files. RE: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker
I'd forgotten about using calibre (it's free) and will convert PDFs to ePUB format eBooks. It doesn't handle digital rights, so if you wanted to restrict your ePUB in any way, it won't work - it only creates open ePUBs. -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Rick Quatro Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 2010 3:00 PM To: ri...@inficon.com; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker Hi Richard, If you look at the EPUB datasheet PDF, you will see that EPUB is an XML-based file format designed to reflow text according to screen size.
