Richard,

ePublisher Pro has been able to create ePUB output since the 2010.2
release. This is fairly straight-forward to accomplish with FrameMaker
source documents. ePublisher handles all ePUB 2.0 packaging
requirements and offers support for configuring splash page images under
various readers.

You can check out a segment on building ePUB deliverables with
ePublisher here:

  47:50 into the session

http://www.webworks.com/Recordings/2010/09/Show%20Me%20-%20September%202010/

The segment also discusses inherent limitations you may encounter with
various ePUB readers and demonstrates ePublisher options to address them
(large image handling, wide table layouts, etc.)

It would appear that EPUB standard involves an XML standard, in which case you
could very well use FrameMaker in Structured mode.

2010-12-09 Thread Shane Taylor
If you end up having to switch from (presumably unstructured) FrameMaker, I'd
suggest switching not to InDesign but to DITA to accomplish your goals. You can
leverage your group's existing FM knowledge by still using FM to create your
PDFs, but with DITA you are no longer locked into one company's proprietary
format, and you can take advantage of newer technologies and deliverable types
in the future without having to change formats again.

Hi Rich,

You can use FrameMaker as your source files. You'll need to go through
ePublisher Pro or MIF2GO to get the output you want. It's non-trivial
(read, a huge PITA) to get everything working, but it can be done.

Here's some general information on ePub issues:

Good luck. If you decide you want professional help (hmmm...that

RE: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker

2010-12-08 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Richard,

If you look at the EPUB datasheet PDF, you will see that EPUB is an
XML-based file format designed to reflow text according to screen size.
Since EPUB is XML-based, you should be able to produce output from
FrameMaker that can be converted to EPUB format. As far as tools, you can
look at Webworks EPublisher (I think that's what they call it now), or
possibly Mif2Go. If you are using structured FrameMaker, you may be able to
use XSLT to transform your documents to the EPUB format.

I am sure there is more to it than I am describing, but my point is that you
don't have to switch to InDesign to produce EPUB files.

I'd forgotten about using calibre (it's free) and will convert PDFs to ePUB
format eBooks. It doesn't handle digital rights, so if you wanted to restrict
your ePUB in any way, it won't work - it only creates open ePUBs.
