Re: [Framers] OT: Adobe Tool Question

2016-09-12 Thread Mike Wickham
Yes, it can still be an issue on Windows, if you are unaware of the
steps necessary to prevent automatic conversion from CMYK to RGB. The
latest versions of FrameMaker have improved CMYK support built-in, but
there are still reports of it being tricky. So I have stuck with using
EPS for graphics. FrameMaker passes EPS around the Windows GDI,
eliminating the potential of unexpected CMYK to RGB or Pantone to RGB
conversions by Windows. I don't use Pantone colors, so someone else
would have to comment on the details of using them.

It's also important to be sure that Acrobat isn't set to convert colors.

Mike Wickham

This begs a question, with my apologies if it has been belabored here in the
past.

In pre-press work on Mac, I often had extensive struggles with the final PDFs
for all sorts of reasons (extraneous plates, hairlines and so on), but
'helpful' conversion *from* CMYK was never one of them.

Is this still an issue with Windows FrameMaker? The thought of Pantones being
converted to RGB is the stuff of nightmares.

Re: [Framers] OT: Adobe Tool Question

2016-09-09 Thread Mike Wickham
FrameMaker is an old program and EPS is an old all-purpose kind of
format. It acts as an envelope for both vector and bitmap graphics,
without automatically converting vector to bitmap. If you want maximum
resolution on printing press, vector is preferable for line drawings
because it is infinitely resizable without pixelation. EPS is also the
only way to keep Windows GDI from automatically converting CMYK graphics
to RGB. If your destination is printing press, CMYK is preferred over
RGB. EPS was also the only way to keep Windows from converting Pantone
colors to RGB. So, if your destination is printing press, EPS graphics
are still the safest way to go (although PDF graphics can also do the
job now).

I hope I got that all right.

Adobe Illustrator will open eps easily and allow you to save as a variety of
formats. Best to save as .ai to have a good source file to work with, but your
target file can be any number of things. It's easiest if you stay with the same
source/target (you can't "lose" the source then).

Subscription is $10 a month for Photoshop (and Lightroom, if you need/want

Seriously not a big deal and cheaper and more reliable than the regular

Re: [Framers] OT: Adobe Tool Question

2016-09-07 Thread Robert Lauriston
Is EPS required for any reason other than exporting for placement in FrameMaker?

If there's no other reason you need EPS, you don't need to worry about
whether the drawing application can edit EPS files. In fact, you could
probably forget about EPS entirely, and export PDF or EMF to place in
FrameMaker.

only by phone.

Inkscape can't open EPS files, so you have to convert them:

https://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/#how-to-open-eps-files-in-windows

Then exporting to EPS when you're done is problematic:

Re: [Framers] OT: Adobe Tool Question

2016-09-07 Thread Scott Prentice
I'd take a good look at Inkscape. It probably does all you need, is a
good vector graphics editor, and is free (open source) ..

https://inkscape.org/

Between PS and AI, you'd want to use AI for EPS. Assuming you're using
EPS because you want vector graphics, AI is a vector graphics editor.
While PS can export EPS, that's not what PS was designed for.

However, neither of these are available as a perpetual license (AFAIK).
Here are other choices for vector graphics editors ..

Illustrator is for vector graphics, Photoshop is for bitmaps. EPS is a
vector format, so you should use Illustrator to edit it. You can sort
of edit EPS in Photoshop, but not really.

If you really need to edit EPS, I would not mess around with anything
but Illustrator. Is that really a hard requirement and if so why?
