Re: [Framers] Putting Text in a gray box? - Can it be a para tag?

2018-06-05 Thread David Artman
Looks like you have a lot of options already. My suggestions, in order
   of ease of typesetting:

   0. Be sure to setup 3 paragraph formats: "C1 - Code First", "CB - Code
Body", and "CL - Code Last". [That's my general approach to format
naming: keep the accelerator keys efficient: no more than four
keystrokes.] They should be set to no language (ignore for
   translation).

   A) Rely on frame above and below and whitespace.

   1. Make two Reference Page images, taking into account your page
margins, left and right indentation on your code paragraph formats, and
'inherent' whitespace you want between each image and the code (extra
white at bottom of Frame Above and at top of Frame Below). You can even
use the image to suggest a screen, with rounded 'corners' instead of
   just a line or what-not.

   2. Set C1 to Frame Above Pgf, Space Before 0" (or a value greater than
the reference image height, if you want to offset more than the image's
whitespace). Set its Next Pgf to CB.

   3. CB is pretty normal. Just get line spacing and space before/after
right for consistency with C1 and CL. Next Pgf=CB.

   4. Set CL to Frame Below Pgf and the inverse of C1's Space Before as
   CL's Space After.

You should then be able to typeset a code block with F9... C1,
paste/type, Enter, paste/type [now in CB]... etc... etc... [last line]
F9... CL, final line paste/type. Alternately, paste a whole block and
change first and last line's pgf format.

PRO: Super fast. Flows normally between breaks (column or page).

CON: Not identical to what you wanted.

   B) Table style for fill and border and cell padding; single "Code"
   paragraph format.

PRO: Identical to your stated goal, all driven by the table format
(that is, no tweaks to paragraph format table cell padding or
anything). Single paragraph format for Code. Table positioning can be
creative (e.g., in a side column.

CON: Tedious to typeset. Cannot break across pages (unless you go with
the SUPER-tedious-to-typeset method where each code line has its own
   row!).

   C) Place an anchored text frame and put code into it (as text inset?
Can a text inset go into a text box frame? It's been a while since I
   messed with fancy frame tricks).

PRO: You can do just about anything to position, float, resize,
runaround, etc the text box frame.

NEUTRAL: Not in main flow. Maybe OK (translation avoidance?); maybe a
   nightmare (can reflow strangely).

CON: Probably more tedious than table cell(s) method(s), unless you can
control the border and background shading with an object format (again,
it's been so long I haven't SEEN object formats in use, yet!).

My choice would, obviously, be A for the speed and for the flexibility
WRT Frame Above/Below Pgf, three-format fine tuning of pre- and
post-code spacing, and cleanliness in terms of flow/cursor movement by
   keyboard.

   HTH;

   David

   Hi,
I am going to import a set of Word files to Frame.
I am working on setting up a template in Frame which contains styles
   that
look like the styles in Word (where this is feasible)
The Word template put program code in a little grey box.
i.e the text is courier etc. with a border around it, and pale grey
   fill.
Can such a paragraph tag be made in FrameMaker? If so, how?
I do not mind spending time setting this up, but after this I would
   want to
use it easily using keyboard shortcuts (F9 etc)
   Thanks

2018-05-10 Thread Robert Lauriston
In FrameMaker, is there any way to create a block of code you can
select by double- or triple-clicking?

That seems far more useful to me than the appearance. If the box
doesn't indicate that I'd just skip it.

I certainly wouldn't wrap the code in a table since that can make
extra work when you're generating HTML or migrating from FrameMaker to
another tool.

If your deliverable is a PDF and you embed the font in the file, there should
be absolutely no problem on any platform. If your deliverable is something
other than a PDF, it could be a whole different matter.

2018-05-10 Thread Fred Ridder
Another modern monospaced font that has become fairly popular as an alternative
to variations on clunky old Courier is Consolas, which has been distributed
with Windows OS since the days of Windows Vista. It has good differentiation
of the various easily mistaken character pairs (1 and lower-case L, 5 and
upper-case S, etc) and even has a slashed 0 to eliminate confusion with
upper-case Os.

Re: [Framers] Putting Text in a gray box? - Can it be a para tag?

2018-05-10 Thread Monique Semp
My setup doesn't have any one-cell or one-page restrictions, and
enables easy copy/paste of the code from the generated PDF.
(I read the other replies, and actually am unclear as to whether a
solution has already been provided. Sorry if this is redundant info.)
I've used a combo of table style and para styles. The table style's
"Basic" settings are for the cell margins, spacing, etc. And although I
haven't put outside borders, the table's rulings properties provide
this via the "Heading and Footing Ruling" and "Outside Ruling"
settings. The table's shading properties are where I define the gray
   shadings.
The first row is designated as a heading row, and I've used a "table
heading code" para style to include a variable for the "continued"
variable -- in my case, I'm using the built-in "Table Sheet" variable.
Then the remaining table rows are each of "table code lines" para
style, which is where I've defined the code font (I'm using Consolas 9
   pt), and other para styles.
I actually have three table styles for code listings to cover the three
possible indentation levels: "Code Listing" for alignment with body
text (well, all the code tables are slightly indented via the table's
Left setting for Indents & Spacing), "Code Listing 2" for
   alignment/slight-offset under a bullet or first-level procedure
step/numbered list, and "Code Listing 3" for the next level. The "2"
and "3" table styles are identical to the "regular" table, except for
   the left indent.
   HTH,

Re: [Framers] Putting Text in a gray box? - Can it be a para tag?

2018-05-10 Thread Simon BUCH

The delights of formatting ...

You can make a gray box by making a table format, with specific ruling
and shading properties. Then insert a table with 1 cell, 1 row.
The only down-side to this is that FrameMaker will only allow a cell to
be 1 page long.

You may also want to specify the table design to use a specific
paragraph format for your mono-spaced Courier font, with the Paragraph
Designer > Advanced > Word Spacing properties set with the minimum,
maximum, and optimum spacing = 100% ; otherwise the spacing of the font
may look bizarre at times.

Re: [Framers] Putting Text in a gray box? - Can it be a para tag?

2018-05-10 Thread shuttie27
Hello CarolineAs far as I know, there is no way to create such a paragraph
format directly in Frame. The alternative in Frame is to put the text in a
one-cell table. You can define the background colour for a table cell, and
borders as desired, and save it as a reusable table format. You can
semi-automate the process with a plugin called AutoText, which I think is free
(working from increasingly dim memory here, as I don't use FM much these
days). One caveat occurs to me, and that is that in FM, unlike Word, a table
cell cannot span a page break, so long pieces of code could be problematic. It I
were doing it, I would forgo the shading and just demarcate the code with
appropriate white space and, as you say, a monospaced font such as Courier.
Hope this helps. As I said, I'm working from memory so some of the details
given above may be inaccurate!

Subject: [Framers] Putting Text in a gray box? -
Can it be a para tag?
Hi,

I am going to import a set of Word files to Frame.

I am working on setting up a template in Frame which contains styles that
look like the styles in Word (where this is feasible)

The Word template put program code in a little grey box.

i.e the text is courier etc. with a border around it, and pale grey fill.

Can such a paragraph tag be made in FrameMaker? If so, how?

I do not mind spending time setting this up, but after this I would want to
use it easily using keyboard shortcuts (F9 etc)

Thanks
