Carol,

On this list attachements are stripped off the messages. You would
have to send it directly to someone on the list or jing a snapshot
of it (see http://www.jingproject.com/) and insert the link.

I think a sample is need for a compact answer.

 Hello there,
does anyone know of a utility that would put guides on my screen. To
explain: Frame doesn't have any guides and at times it's needed. Any
advanced software - Photoshop, Indesign, etc. has rules (or guides)
which you can just drag around and place wherever you need and align
your objects accordingly. Not so with Frame. So I thought maybe there is
some on-screen guides utility that I can use. I know, I know - grid
lines, snapping, aligning, etc. are all to my discretion. However i'm
doing a specific graphic work and all i need is guides.

 Ideas?

The
left margin is correct as is. See the attached example.

You can't send files to the list because of the clear security risk.

It's hard to tell where you're starting from (what's a chapter TOC
one?) or what your goal is, but it clearly involves master page
layouts. It sounds like you're not familiar with master pages, so I
suggest you look them up in the manual or online help.

Depending on your situation, you may learn that you're just using the
wrong master pages, or you may find that you have to modify the text
frames on your default master pages. (Columns are defined in the text
frame's properties.)

Maybe you started from the wrong kind of file -- the master page layouts
for frontmatter and index files might be different from those in your
chapter files. I take it you're using a template whose designer isn't
available. If so, it behooves you to learn at least a bit about template
design so you can see how this one works.

BTW, it would help if you provided a meaningful subject for your
questions instead of simply replying to an unrelated post.

My workaround has been to make lines (.5pt) in Cyan and then delete them
when I have finished aligning to them.

A more dangerous approach would be to apply a special color tag to the
lines that you could then change to white or your background color.

I would add guides to the wishlist for next FM upgrade.

Re: ON-SCREEN GUIDES

2008-08-13 Thread Peter Gold
Have you tried drawing guide lines manually, positioning them
accurately with object properties, and assigning them a non-printing
or invisible color?

Use:

* View Color Definitions Print As to define a non-printing color.

OR

* View Color Views to define a color view that makes specified
colors invisible.

Hi Michael,

Have you tried showing grid lines (View Grid
lines)? The default is quarter inch, but you can set the spacing to
suit your needs (View Options). You can then use the Gravity and
Snap commands on the Graphics menu to help align. I must confess,
though, that like others on the list, I position graphics using the
object's properties.

Yes, you are right with InDesign. I'm using it too. My workflow is all around
Frame though and I'm having to cope it somehow. Ever so often I have certain
objects that have to be scaled and placed based on their look, not digital
size and that is where guides come handy. I set off on a small project now to
create a script that would handle these guides in FM. If someone is interested
- I'm open to suggestions.

Michael
P.S. this one should reach the list ;-). Thanks for noticing it.

Hi Michael,

I don't think you replied to the whole list with this.

For a visual reference, I think drawing lines on the master page would work
best, but you'd have to delete them before printing.

I just don't see the need for a visual reference. You can align objects and
accurately set their position on a page. It sounds like you might need a true
page layout tool such as InDesign.
