Re: [Framers] FW: Cannot reset file from "View-Only"

2016-04-18 Thread Robert Lauriston
The doc says, "Press Esc Shift+f l (lowercase L) k."

This is standard style for FrameMaker shortcuts. The "(lowercase)" is
there because you can't tell l (lowercase L) from I (uppercase i) in
most or all of the fonts users might be reading that in.

[Framers] FW: Cannot reset file from "View-Only"

2016-04-18 Thread Stamm, David
2016-04-18-01T20:15Z

Ah, orthography . . .

_HUGE_ thanks to both Rick Quattro and to Fred Ridder, who provided this
response:

1) Press and release Esc
2) Press and Release F (Shift+f) <<<< _This_ capital "F" was what was not
evident from the way I found the shortcut written.
3) Press and release l (unshifted L)
4) Press and release k (unshifted K)

The instructions focused on having a lower-case "L."

Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1
FrameMaker 2015 Release, 13.0.2.433

In the Hypertext window, I might have accidentally chosen the "Make View-Only"
button.

Now, FrameMaker detects the file, which is on a server as "View Only."  There
is no .lck file for the offending file.  Help states that the keyboard shortcut
to unlock a file is Esc Shift+flk (press and release Esc, press and hold Shift,
and press flk (with lower-case "L"), which doesn't make sense to me.  This runs
RoboScreenCapture, which is not wanted.

Esc+flk (press and hold Esc and press flk) runs RoboScreenCapture,
which is still not wanted.

Esc flk (press and release Esc, and press flk) also runs
RoboScreenCapture, which is still not wanted at all.

I have:

ensured that the file is not set to "Read-only" in Windows

closed the file and reopened it

restarted the workstation

tried to save the file as .mif, which is not allowed

Getting out of View-only state

2011-11-18 Thread Thomas Scalise
I am running Frame 10.0.1.402 on Windows 7. Somehow, I have put a number of the
chapters in a book into View-only mode. I tried the Esc Shift+flk key sequence
but it has no effect (surprise, surprise). Can anyone help me out? I am not
sure how these files got into this state. I need to get them back into a normal
Document state.

The book was a Frame 9 book that I brought into Frame 10 and saved as a Frame
10 book and documents. The generated files are not View-only and one of the
chapter files is not, The rest of the chapter files are View-only.

For the life of me I cannot figure out what I did.

It's Esc F l k -- or, if you prefer, Esc Shift+f l k. The point is, don't Shift

View Only

2009-08-18 Thread Judy Bragg
I'm using FM8 to build PDF documents
Yesterday, I spent quite a while building a flowchart.  Each step is a hotspot
that takes them to the relavant topic in the manual.  I got it done just in
time to insert it to the manual, PDF it and send it to tech. support.
Today, I'd like to take that flowchart and modify it for a similar program.  My
problem is that, for some reason, it acts like a view only document.  I can
select the text box from the master page and I can select the graphic frame in
which I drew the flowchart, but I can't select the component parts of the
flowchart itself.  I've tried both methods of toggling the View Only property
and the button in the Hypertext dialog changes back and forth.  Unfortunately,
when (according to the status of the button) the document should be editable, I
still can't edit my flow chart.
Does anyone out there have any ideas what else I could try?
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and help!

Try keying in:

the file lock command toggle, and see if anything changes. You should
see the menus change immediately and be able to work in the file.

If nothing at all happens, do it a second time to toggle it off.

Re: View Only

2009-08-18 Thread Peter Gold
Is it possible that either you've imported the PDF of the chart into
the frame that held the drawn graphic chart, or you've inadvertently
copied a frame on top of the frame that contains the chart? I suspect
this happened when you dragged the frame on the master page, if, while
you held Ctrl to change the text pointer to the graphic pointer in
order to select the frame, you dragged the frame with Ctrl still
pressed.

Peter,
You win the prize! I had a text frame covering the entire chart. I
often inadvertently copy by continuing to hold the Ctrl key while I
attempt to move a frame. I'm sure that must've happened and I didn't
notice.

Thanks for solving the mystery and saving me a ton of time!

Been there, done that, trained people not to do that. A good way to
learn how to fix mistakes is to make them.

I'm using FM8 to build PDF documents
Yesterday, I spent quite a while building a flowchart.? Each step is a hotspot
that takes them to the relavant topic in the manual.? I got it done just in
time to insert it to the manual, PDF it and send it to tech. support.
Today, I'd like to take that flowchart and modify it for a similar program.? My
problem is that, for some reason, it acts like a view only document.? I can
select the text box from the master page and I can select the graphic frame in
which I drew the flowchart, but I can't select the component parts of the
flowchart itself.? I've tried both methods of toggling the View Only property
and the button in the Hypertext dialog changes back and forth.? Unfortunately,
when (according to the status of the button) the document should be editable, I
still can't edit my flow chart.
Does anyone out there have any ideas what else I could try?
Thanks in advance for your wisdom and help!

I had a power failure last night and my PC shut down (FM 7.1 Win XP).

When I restarted, my book was locked as were all of the component files. I
chose to reset the lock on all of them, except for one, which I must have
fat fingered when presented the option.

Now every time I update my book, I see the message,

The file XXX is View-Only. FrameMaker might change this file while
updating the book.

I've closed and opened the book several times and restarted Frame, but to no
avail.

How can I reset it so that it's not view only and I can edit it again?

Of course it's d-day, so natch these things are inevitable.

Hi All,

We've got an odd problem with an FM file (v 7.2b128 Win). When the doc
was released, the writer used the (timesaving and fabulously thorough)
Archive plugin to archive the project files and then used WinZip to create
a .zip archive (unencrypted) of the files. Shortly thereafter, the
original files were purged and only the .zip of the archived files
remains.

Today, we had to access the FM files from that zipped archive, and
everything restored in workable fashion, except for one chapter file,
which is now opening as view only, no matter what we do. We checked attrib
and it's not set to read-only. It's like it was locked for editing when
the archive was created, but we don't know for sure; that's just the only
explanation I can imagine for how we could find ourselves in this spot,
based on my experience with having opened files while they're locked by
another user. The Archive plugin didn't give an error or note as much in
the log, though, so that may not be the reason at all.

Regardless, we're in the rather untenable position of having to find a
way to get an editable version of an FM file from the view-only version of
it, with no record of a .lck file for it and no other version of the FM
file available. The view-only version has conditional text hidden that we
now need to show in the new version, so although I have been able to
convert the view-only file to TXT, all the hidden text was omitted from
the TXT version.

I did try to dig through the archives, but...I'm coming up empty-handed.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Rene Stephenson
