Re: [Frameworks] New filmmaker

Yes, of course; I should have written editing. My only point is that
long takes involve editing-like decisions.

Well, as Vertov argued, the whole process of film making is editorial

understand as montage, at least in Eisenstein's sense of the term?

The first Lumiere arguably has two instances of montage: the decision
made about the points of time at which to start and stop filming. And
both seem carefully considered choices.

One principle-Montage.
The stuff Cinema is made of.
Because films ARE made of clashing frames.

I don't know where you live, but I know a great resource in
Brooklyn is the public access channel. If you take an
orientation and a class there (for under $100) you get to use
their equipment. I imagine a lot of other cities have a
similar set-up. That way you can try out a few different
types of cameras, although it's possible that they will be
out of date. I personally don't care about that. For me, just
holding a camera and seeing a frame really changed how I
thought about shooting. Good luck!

I'm looking to buy a 16mm camera in the Northeast United States. I'm a film
student, recent graduate of SMFA. I'm traveling to Mexico to shoot a film for 4
months. Now that I don't have access to equipment I need to buy a 16mm camera.
My budget is $1000-$1,500 and I just need a good camera. I would love Bolex or
Scoopic but would also be down for an Arri S. I'm based in Boston but could
also easily make it to NY to pick up a camera.

[Frameworks] Passing of Robert Darroll

2014-05-23 Thread Huckleberry Lain
Dear Frameworks,
It is with sadness that I announce the passing of abstract animator and
visual music artist, Robert Darroll.
At the iotaCenter we have been big supporters of his work and are saddened
my his passing.

I got to know him a little bit from working on a DVD of his Korean Trilogy
films.

Both the iotaCenter and Mark Toscano at the Academy Film Archive are
interested in finding a couple of his earlier films Cenit, Spiegelung, and
Zeit to make sure they have a good home if they don't already. Please
contact me if you have any leads.

The first words that come to mind about Robert Darroll’s films are density
and complexity -- of imagery, technique and style. He assimilates,
transforms and transcends almost every technique in the history of
animation. This is the apotheosis of motion graphics – simultaneously
photographic, videographic and computer graphic. Darroll creates a hypnotic
and visionary universe through virtuosic use of rotoscoping, compositing,
layering, filtering and complex segmentations of the frame.

Darroll understands that digital technology’s most important contribution
to moving image art is the seamless merging of photographic and synthetic
imagery, live action with animation. Organic figures are set against
elegant geometric constructions, shot through with startling vectors and
trajectories.

Visual density is matched by sonic density. Darroll’s sound design evolves
from the Theremin-like electronic score of Memb to dazzling multilayered
blends of natural and synthetic sounds in later works.

The earlier works show the influence of Oskar Fischinger, Viking Eggeling,
Len Lye, Paul Glabicki, even a touch of Jordan Belson. But gradually he
transcends them to give us the unique vision of a true master of his art.
The films are ravishingly beautiful journeys through the corridors of an
inspired imagination. -Gene Youngblood

The DVD will be out soon and we're organizing screenings of his films, but
I'll announce that at a more appropriate time.

Sincerely,
Huckleberry
