As Re:Voir is currently updating our catalogue and making space, we
have decided to donate our extensive inventory of VHS tapes. Rather
than discard these cassettes, we are looking for homes for them.
Please contact me individually for the list of cassettes we have
available. While we are happy to donate them to individuals or schools
at no charge, we do not have the means to assume shipping expenses. We
will be glad to help you find the most economical way to ship!
Please feel free to spread the word far and wide. We hope to donate
the majority of these by July 15 when we have decided to discard
 whatever is left.

Hi Heath-

In 1974 I produced several hundred feet of Film Electrocutions.

The film was wetted with a salt solution and drawn between two electrodes at
9000vac in the dark. This resulted in arcing across the width of the 16mm DP
negative, with the flashing concentrated between the sprocket holes.

 Dear Frameworkers,

I'm a doctoral candidate working on contemporary British
artists' cinema. At the moment I'm doing some research on Jane
and Louise Wilson's The Toxic Camera, an installation which, in
part, commemorates the nuclear accident at Chernobyl. The installation
is framed as a response to Vladimir Shevchenko's film, Chernobyl:
A Chronicle of Difficult Weeks. Filmed in the immediate aftermath of
the accident, Shevchenko's film was damaged by the ambient
radiation--leaving the film's emulsion visibly pockmarked by the
collision with decaying atomic particles. At various points, the
Wilson's digital video seems to simulate the material damage in
the Shevchenko film--sometimes literally mimicking a pocked marked
emulsion, other times apparently translating this analogue damage
into other digital distortions in the image.
My question: does anyone know how these digital effects were
technically achieved? Obviously, there are all kinds of digital
filters that emulate a film look, but I would like to know exactly
what the Wilson's process was in production of their video's
effects. Perhaps someone has their contact information?
A secondary question: Can anyone point me to any other films in which
the emulsion registers non-light electromagnetic energy, that is,
radiation outside the visible spectrum. I can think of certain films
that intentionally make use x-ray photography, but I'd be
interested in other examples, especially in accidental instances.
 Best wishes,
 Heath

Re: [Frameworks] Beatriz Flores Gutiérrez

2013-01-08 Thread Tony Conrad
Dear Bernie---

I am truly shocked and profoundly saddened to hear this news. I didn't know.
Beatriz was a really Big person, with a larger meaning that infiltrated
everything about her. She was also a sweet and warm person, and I always knew
she
would find her way on the right track; this makes her loss all the more
paradoxical and incomprehensible.

I know that she has been a very important part of your life, and the things you
have known about and with her are lastingly important. For me, Beatriz will stay
strong and vital in memory; I was very fond of her for the great person she was,
and the great work she undertook.

Yours,

Beatriz Flores Gutiérrez passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2012 of

She attended San Fransisco State University, then completed an MFA in
the Department of Media Study at the State University of New York at
Buffalo. Between the Fall of 2003 and the Spring of 2009 she taught
at the University of North Texas' Department of Radio, Television, and
Film, Northern Illinois University's Time Arts program within their
School of Art, and Evergreen State College's Media Arts program.
Beatriz was an active member of the Evolutionary Girls Club, a
collective founded in part by Erica Eaton during their studies in
Buffalo. An active chamption of undocumented workers within the U.S.,
Beatriz developed a series of videos about the experiences of Mexicans
working and living in the States. By nature very sweet and
approacheable, she was a fierce defender of the everday working
Mexican-Americans. In Mexico Beatriz was a theater student before
moving north and always loved dance and physical expression. In the
North she was profoundly disturbed by the activities of the U.S.
border patrol and Immigration authorities. Beatriz never tired of
returning to the border, where she had long-standing relationships
with Americans working on behalf of migrants. Organizations on the
U.S./Mexican border like No More Deaths and Humane Borders were
frequent destinations for Beatriz, and some of us received our basic
education about the border and the U.S. foreign policy itself on road
trips in her company discussing documentary film and the history of
activist media. She was a central figure in the organization of the
conference Bridges Not Walls, which was held at Evergreen State
College May 15 - 18, 2008. Beatriz also loved pioneers, including
Beatriz Noronha da Costa, with whom she studied during the latter's
year teaching in Buffalo. During her final years Beatriz had many
friends in Olympia with whom she shared an interest in movement
workshops, yoga, and natural living. She is survived by three
sisters, a brother, and her parents, now separated, all of whom live
near Mexico City, where Beatriz grew up. She maintained some activity
and enjoyment of life until near the end, and passed peacefully,
 without pain, and among friends.

diverse -- but also quite small, and tightly-knit, even though we're in the

 SUBJECT: [Frameworks] MFA
Perhaps this is a touchy subject on this list, but I'd love to hear
what anyone has to say on the subject of film MFAs. I am just starting
the research phase of applying and any direction would be much
appreciated. There seems to be such a polemic between film schools
geared towards positioning students for industry jobs and film schools
that focus more on individual practice, conceptualization,
experimentation... And while I'd say I am way more on the later side,
I'd certainly love to find a school that has a good technical
foundation. Other than that, I'm looking for a school that offers
working as a TA, or full rides... which seems harder and harder to
find And just to throw it out there, any thoughts on Berlin?
Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I figured who better to ask!

 Thanks so much,

Re: [Frameworks] {Disarmed} Re: Andy Warhol's SLEEP / Providence, RI / Feb 18 / Magic Lantern + RK Projects

2012-02-12 Thread Tony Conrad
John Cale performed in the Vexations concert, among others of course, but that
was well before the VU, as I recall. However, Andy was in contact with La Monte
Young about sound for his films when they were shown at Lincoln Center.

I can't accept the idea that Andy got the idea for repetition, or editing
together long films, from Satie. First, it's far more probable that he got the
idea from our group with La Monte; we even gave a concert at Henry Geldzahler's
place. Second, Andy generally used a magazine with 1200 foot reels so he
wouldn't
have to splice or do any editing.

In Edie (Stein w/Plimpton, pp 234-235), George Plimpton

I mentioned it to Andy only because I thought he might be vaguely
interested--he was doing these eight-hour films of people sleeping.
It never occurred to me that he knew of this concert, or of Satie,
since it wouldn't have surprised me a bit if he'd never heard of
Satie. His reaction startled me. He said, Ohhh, ohhh, ohhh!
I'dnever seen his face so animated. It made a distinct impression.
Between ohhh's he told me that he'd actually gone to the concert and
sat through the whole thing. He couldn't have been more delighted to
 be telling me about it.

My reading of the announcement is that the Vexations concert in
Providence is 45 minutes long, and that it precedes the screening.

Warhol's conception of the film, and he took from Satie a working
method making possible the editing of his short reels into a lengthy
 film.
Sorry I don't have time at the moment to
unpack this point as I'm running out the door, but here is a link to
some supporting literature to this position:

Is there some aspect of the text on this link
that actually supports your claim that Vexations
specifically influenced Sleep? It's not even clear that Warhol ever heard
 Vexations.
But even if the answer is yes, that doesn't
support playing one during a sceening of the other. Would you have
Pound's Cantos recited during a screening of Dog Star

 George Landow's Bardo Follies?
