Re: [Frameworks] Jazz Music and Avant-Garde Film
Has anyone mentioned Paula Gladstone's 1980 film 'The Dancing Soul Of The Walking People' yet? I seem to recall Duke Ellington, Alice Coltrane, Anthony Braxton, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and some others featuring on the soundtrack. Incidentally, I would LOVE to see this film be released on Blu-Ray - I saw it twice in its restored glory at the Bradford International Film Festival in 2013 and it easily stands as one of the most beautiful films I've ever experienced... one for RE:VOIR to release perhaps? [Frameworks] Contact email for Sarah Markgraf? / Paul Sharits book
Hello all, Could someone possibly forward me a contact email address for Sarah Markgraf who edited the recent 'I Was a Flawed Modernist' book of Paul Sharits' writings? The Film-Makers Cooperative published this limited edition book earlier this year, but almost two weeks later they still haven't responded to the email I sent them in regards to purchasing a copy. The only other place to buy it online seems to be a broken ecwid link they made which has wildly inaccurate shipping fees for sending it to the United Kingdom (the total price comes to over $200!): https://store6765013.ecwid.com/#!/I-Was-a-Flawed-Modernist-Collected-Writings-of-and-Stories-about-Paul-Sharits/p/78251466/category=0 I did see Sarah comment to a public Facebook post about the book with the suggestion of purchasing it directly from her, but I don't have an account to message her directly, nor do I intend to rejoin the site. It seems such a pity that a monumental publication like this has not received due care in its promotion and distribution... If I can't buy it directly from Sarah, I would greatly appreciate being provided with another link to buy it, or my message being forwarded to another seller or individual that has it for sale online - preferably with slightly more realistic shipping prices! Re: [Frameworks] mental problems
I highly recommend the freak out scene/s in the 1978 film Death Drug - it's a clusterfuck of slowed down video, overlaid synth effects (both visual and audio), cheesy hallucinations and completely over the top acting from Miami Vice's Philip Michael Thomas - has to be seen to be believed! The full film is on YouTube. John ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] Introductory books on experimental cinema
I'd say just start with books that are easily available and cheap to pick up, like A.L. Rees' A History of Experimental Film and Video, published by the British Film Institute (either edition is fine). I don't think bombarding someone with a list of 30 or so books as an "introduction" is a good idea... if they want to research the subject further then they can investigate some of those other titles in the bibliography at the end of that book - you know, after they've first finished reading it. Re: [Frameworks] 40 years of VHS - short video recommendations?
Hi Richard, For a screening of abstract video/digital works I programmed at Leeds International Film Festival in 2011 called "Destructural Video", I screened an excerpt from Neil Gravander's video "Improvisations for Hand-Spun Video Springer"; the artist modified a VCR so that tapes could be played backwards and forwards at varying speeds like a tape reel or turntable. For me, it brought to mind the stuttering film work of Martin Arnold and the laserdisc experiments of Raphael Montañez Ortiz, but using domestic video equipment. Video link here: https://vimeo.com/81828111 The screening came about by the way from my research into medium-specific video art for my undergraduate degree - I was very interested in the glitch art movement happening then and trying to find similarities with early artists' video and structuralist/structuralist film aesthetics. It's still a subject that interests me - if I think of more examples that are specifically related to the VHS format itself (rather than other consumer video formats), I'll let you know. Re: [Frameworks] Women filmmaker autobiographies
It's not necessarily about filmmaking specifically, but 'Video Days; And What We Saw Through The Viewfinder' by Nancy Cain could be considered. John ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
[Frameworks] For sale: William C. Wees' Recycled Images and other film/video related books
Hello all, I've been having a major clear out of my book collection and realised I've got a duplicate copy of this apparently OOP book published by Anthology Film Archives in 1993 which I'm happy to sell. It's in excellent condition with no damage to the covers and clean unmarked pages. I'm not sure of its value as the only copies I can find are on Amazon which are extremely overpriced and without descriptions (i.e. the sellers probably don't possess any copies for sale), so why not make me an offer? You can either reply to me here or to my dedicated email address which is negativebo...@gmail.dot.com. I'm based in the United Kingdom and accept payment in Pound Sterling through PayPal, and also bank transfer/cheque for people who have a UK bank. I have a whole bunch of other interesting books that I'm prepared to sell too (including ones on experimental cinema and video art), you can find the complete list here at negativebooks.tumblr.com/booklist. Again, please make me offers on them! I'm more than happy to combine orders to reduce postage costs. Conditions of the books vary as most are used and secondhand, but I can send detailed descriptions and photos if any titles specifically interest you. Many thanks, John ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] Books on the History of Avant-Garde film in US
Sorry, replace some mentions of Parts with Volumes - it's all very confusing! On Sat, Jan 31, 2015 at 1:30 PM, John McAndrew jj.mcand...@gmail.com wrote: Hello, I noticed a few Maya Deren books in this excellent compiled list (of which I own around half of the 60 titles, the rest will be seeked out!) and it made me think - were the remaining two volumes of VèVè Clark, Millicent Hodson and Catrina Neiman's three volume biography and collected works 'The Legend Of Maya Deren' (published by Anthology Film Archives) ever released? Part Two of Volume I was published in 1988 and though it mentions the other two forthcoming parts on the dustjacket, I can't seem to find mention of them on websites like Amazon. I did a quick google search and a bookseller's website said Part Two was due to be published in 1997 and the third volume was completed but not yet in production. I also read that VèVè Clark sadly died in 2007. Can anyone offer any more information on these remaining volumes? Did the project collapse along with Film Culture in 1996? Re: [Frameworks] Films that utilize the zoom lens?
The recent mainstream film Limitless uses an infinite zoom in effect in the opening credits sequence and during a montage or two.
