Re: [Frameworks] Eclair NPR

2020-02-19 Thread Scott Dorsey
There are literally dozens and dozens of different motors for the NPR,
everybody and his brother made one. As Jeff says, if you want to shoot
synch, you probably want the Alcan.

Now, there are some other motors out there that give you crystal control
and varying speeds, and some of them that do ramps and fancy things, and
if you come across one I wouldn't turn it down, but they are not as common
as the Alcan and not as well-supported.

Also be aware that not all Perfectone motors are crystal-synch... there
is one model Perfectone that is fairly accurate but will still require an
umbilical.

I don't know where to send you... Chambless always has motors for those
things, but they want ludicrously high prices for them given the current
market for 16mm gear. And there's no reason to replace your motor when it
is likely not difficult to repair at someplace like DuAll or Whitehouse.

Try Bob Allen and/or Cinema Engineering (both in LA at the number and web
contacts I provided), then try Visual Products (Ohio),
and Du-All (NY). These venders/contacts are the most likely to have motors,
parts, etc.

If you do indeed have an Aaton Alcan 54 motor for your NPR, I encourage
your to send it to AZ Spectrum. Andrew was one of the
few I could find who were interested in working on my Alcan motor. And it
still works perfectly.

Hi here is a thought, you might consider just buying a new motor all together.
Might be cheaper because there are tones of them out there.

Re: [Frameworks] Eclair NPR

2020-02-19 Thread mariah garnett
Hi guys,
Thanks for the advice...
I've tested it with 2 separate batteries, one which was from a rental house
so I'm pretty sure it's the motor, not the power source. I don't know how
to check the fuse in the motor. I think it's an Aaton motor. I got it in
2012 and it's been running like a dream since then but I've never had it
serviced before, so it's likely high time.
I'll check out those recommendations in LA.
thanks!

Good advice. Occam’s Razor.

Try it with the motor off the camera, in case the camera is seized up.

I am late to this discussion but have you checked the power cable and the fuses
in the battery and the motor. If the fuse in the motor is blown then the motor
has real problems
Make sure the motor is getting power first.

If you’re in LA try Andree Martin:

https://www.amcamera.com/about/

You might also see if Whitehouse AV will tackle it.

Which crystal motor do you have? There were many for the NPR — KRYMO, BEALA,
Perfectone, Aaton, and several conversions of DC motors like Hafflex. Some
will be easier to repair than others, but the boards are probably pretty easy
to work on compared to modern electronics.

Mariah,

I definitely agree with Scott, the motor can be easily detached and
serviced, though a full CLA or overhaul is likely in order. I service
my camera on regular intervals, and never let it sit for too long without
running the motor, just to keep the mechanism lubricated.

If you're in LA, I suggest trying Richard Bennett at Cinema Engineering (
http://www.cinemaengineering.com/). He can do some Eclair NPR
service, and likely has a source for parts. Also, when George retired and
Optical-Electro House shut down, Bob Allen, who used to work
at OEH with George (and has years of experience with Eclair) was continuing
to do service. It's been a few years since I had this conversation
with George, but here is the last contact I have for Bob
Allen...323-732-0607 or 310-918-9017.

Last I checked with Alan Gordon and Birns & Sawyer, they no longer had
folks around who could perform this work. Otherwise, you have
options in the midwest. Mansung (SMS Chicago) was still doing some work in
retirement, and Visual Products does service and has a cache
of NPR parts. Paul Scaglione is/was the main VP tech with Eclair knowledge.

Lastly, for motor service, try Andrew at AZ spectrum (NY). He serviced my
NPR Alcan motor a few years back, still works great. That says a
lot since nobody liked working on the Alcan motors, not even George at OEH.

Like Scott mentioned, if it's another NPR motor (
http://www.tfgtransfer.com/motors.htm), besides the Alcan, these are easy
for most techs to
work on.

Re: [Frameworks] Eclair NPR

2020-02-19 Thread Scott Dorsey
If the problem is the motor, pull the motor and ship it to DuAll or someone
that works on those. There is no reason to ship the whole camera if there
is a motor issue. (That said, if it's been a decade since the camera has
had a PM, it might be a good idea to ship it in for a PM as well).

The electronics in those motors aren't that hard to work on; anybody that
does camera electronics should be okay with it. It's not like a GSMO or
something full of weird proprietary parts. However, it's likely to be
PM time too.

Try DuAll in NYC. Good luck. The cool thing about the NPR and ACL is that you
can use C-Mount lenses.

My eclair motor seems to have died. Anyone know how to fix it? Or, is
anyone selling a 16mm camera with a crystal sync motor that can record
dialog? I love the NPR/Angenieux lens combo but am open to arri sr series
and others...

[Frameworks] ECLAIR NPR regular 16mm and OʼConner 2060 head

2013-07-04 Thread Leif Magne Tangen
dear frame workers.

I am trying to figure out if you can use a ECLAIR NPR regular 16mm with a
OʼConnor 2060 head.
Unfortunately are the camera and the head currently in a two different
countries, myself in a third.

can anyone tell me for certain if this is possible or not?

we are our own screws (standard, one is 5mm Ø ca. 12 high, one is 9mm Ø and
14mm high)

anyone?

best from leipzig,

There was a guy in Los Angeles who repairs motors.. Duall claims to
repair but they actually just steal your money. I spent a year and
$1200 trying to get the motor repaired/ writing to forums etc.,
shipping the camera to Los Angeles, working with Duall in NYC.. In
the end, I ended up with a stolen motor (so I was told) that squeaked
and a worthless camera.

When Eclair NPR camera were built, they did not release the specs for
the motor or circuitry board. There are people who can cobble them
together- but after a year, I was unable to locate an honest mechanic.

It is a shame- the cameras are affordable and quite nice (when they work).

Good Luck
Bill

Re: [Frameworks] Eclair NPR (motor and service)

2012-03-02 Thread 40 Frames
Mariah,

I would cancel the sale, but I guess it depends on what you paid and what
is included in the package, and
whether you plan to put more money into the package. In general, any used
camera should be fully serviced
to prevent any damage to internal parts and make certain everything is in
alignment.

Motor repairs can be expensive, depending on the damage and which motor it
is. There were something like
15 different motors and modified motors made for the NPR. And depending on
which motor it is, it might not be
worth repairing.

I would guess $300-1000 for a repair, a $1000 or $750 being the cost to
replace it if it's considered dead by a tech.

On of the best companies for motor repairs is AZ Spectrum in Maspeth, NY
(Queens).
http://www.az-spectrum.com/

There is also...
• Visual Products in Wellington, OH
• Man-sung (of SMS) is still doing repairs out of his home in Chicago

In Los Angeles...
You might try George Zorzoli, he said he would still do repairs for old
customers, however you might need to
inquire if you've not worked with George before... George does rebuilds of
the old Ciblo motor and can do
crystal conversions for non-crystal motors. His prices are generally pretty
good.

Also in LA...
Richard Bennett at Cinema Engineering, if he cannot do it, he likely knows
someone who can, he'll outsource
to other technicians for items he does not specialize in

Alan Gordon has parts but no service

I would probably pass on this camera, there are lots of NPR cameras out
there, and you might be better to
buy from Visual Products or somewhere that can guarantee service

As far as Du-All is concerned, I've never used them. Since George Gal is no
longer running the company, I have
only heard bad things about Du-All.

Good luck, it's a great camera if you find a good one and get it serviced.

Alain
