The original request was for the opposite:

"Am looking to identify filmmakers who are in relationships with other
filmmakers, or those have been in the past, and where their individual
works are distinct and separate from each other, rather than outright
collaborations (if that makes sense)."

Re: [Frameworks] "Husbands" and "Wives"

2017-02-13 Thread Chris Kennedy
Ironic that Fred points that the idea of relationship was "understood to
mean sexual, when it doesn't always" and then ends with yet another tale
of that randy ol' genius Hollis Frampton.

It's true that I'm trained as a frameworker to respond quickly to all
frameworks queries in the drinking game style that Chuck lampoons, but
what was interesting about this query and made me respond to it is that
the query raises some interesting questions about parallel artists. How
does cohabitation or romantic attachment (sexual or otherwise) effect very
different people? How does that effect art: Many of the the people listed
have very different styles, some have very similar styles (are these
styles formed post or pre attraction?), some are propelled into a new
creative direction by their courtship. How does that effect reception:
Some of the people listed are overshadowed by their partners, some have
just recently been noticed by history, some have equal recognition, some
gain notice because of the partnership.

How does the couple--in all its forms (trios, too)--negotiate the
selfishness of creation we often say is required by the artist? And most
importantly, how does this list trouble the genius narrative of the
"avant-garde" that often requires the man to run around the circuit,
libido engorged...

Re: [Frameworks] "Husbands" and "Wives"

2017-02-12 Thread Fred Camper

i do agree with Chuck.

These sorts of queries would be much more interesting if we had some
idea of the reason for them, and how the information is going to be
used. That might even open up things to a little healthy critiquing.

Plus, the query itself has been widely misunderstood. The original
question was

"Am looking to identify filmmakers who are in relationships with other
filmmakers, or those have been in the past, and where their individual
works are distinct and separate from each other, rather than outright
collaborations (if that makes sense). This, within the artist's film,
artist-made film, experimental film genre."

That has been interpreted to mean relationships with any other artist
who is not a filmmaker, or relationships between collaborating
filmmakers only, when the original question seems to exclude both.

But I also agree about the arbitrariness of "in relationships with."
This seems to have been understood to mean sexual, when it doesn't
always; it seems to have also been understood to mean as a relatively
exclusive couple, when one could be in a once-a-week non live-in but
long standing sexual relationship, or in an intense, almost spousal,
live-in NON sexual relationship.

One could perhaps even argue that the question is itself a little
offensive, assuming the sexual meaning was intended (as it usually is in
such contexts), privileging sex over other connections, as if the
presence of sex generally implies an identifiable difference in a
relationship. Apparently "liberal" groups such as ours, hyper sensitive
to the way certain differences do not imply an inequality, too easily
accept unchallenged assumptions in areas outside the currently
privileged ones of race, gender, class, orientation.

A few decades ago I was asked to an invitations-only weekend event,
involving cinema, and was invited to bring my "spouse, or mate , if you
have one." The organizers heard my protest and agreed to "friend." I
invited one, who unfortunately declined.

All that said, I wouldn't mind reading a privately-published /Hollywood
Babylon /of avant-garde cinema. Present at a circa 1980 event like the
one Chuck describes, in which women were telling what might be called
"he solicited me stories" about filmmaker X. I once joked about writing
one myself. Hollis Frampton was present, and, somewhat drunk, he
objected, "Hold on there just a minute young man. Hold on there. He
[naming X] is not the /only/ horny filmmaker on the lecture circuit." I
replied, "That's OK, Hollis, we'll include you too." and he smiled.

I understood the question to be about couples who collaborate, not

Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi
James Broughton and Joel Singer
Matthias Muller and Christoph Giradet (I don’t know if they’re a couple)

The number of couples making post-analog video is probably infinite, for
obvious reasons (social, cultural, economic), but Steina and Woody Vasulka must
surely count among the great pioneers of the electronic moving image.

And I always thought “By Brakhage” should in many cases have been “By Brakhage
and Wodening."

Re: [Frameworks] "Husbands" and "Wives"

Experimental filmmaker Mary Ellen Bute made films with her husband, Ted Nemeth,
a cinematographer, who also filmed work for other directors. i am not sure if
this is the kind of combination you are looking for. Kit

Dear Frameworkers,

I'm doing some research on filmmaking couples and wondered if you could help?

Am looking to identify filmmakers who are in relationships with other
filmmakers, or those have been in the past, and where their individual works
are distinct and separate from each other, rather than outright collaborations
(if that makes sense). This, within the artist's film, artist-made film,
experimental film genre.

The pairings I'm looking to identify need not be heterosexual pairings; very
open to historical suggestions as well. They just both need to have made a
significant number of films of their own.

Look forward to hearing your suggestions - very many thanks in advance!
