Hello all,

Here is something I’ve been thinking about lately: films/videos that show the action of someone painting. For my project, I’m not really interested in docs about painters discussing
their work and their philosophies, but rather films or documentation of artists in the act of putting “paint” to “canvas”, no matter how unconventional or abstract. Some mixture of discussion and activity is fine, but the emphasis should be on the action.

I’m thinking about things like the film documentation of Yves Klein’s Anthropometries painting-performances or John Baldessari’s Six Colorful Inside Jobs, for example.

Thanks in advance for any help!

An immense amount of animation that uses different techniques to convey motion

It is an abstract film of 1958 that shows the process of painting a picture by
Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990) who was a Polish abstract painter and a well know
theater director. This film can be found on a DVD ‘Polish Experimental

A few years back @ IHP we screened the complete traveling series called DEL
ÉXTASIS AL ARREBATO (FROM ECSTASY TO RAPTURE): 50 years of alternative Spanish
film offered by the CCCB in Barcelona. Contained within the series was a film
by Basque director and painter, José Antonio Sistiaga. The film ‘…ere erera
baleibu izik subua aruaren…’ (José Antonio Sistiaga/1968-70. Colour, 35mm,
silent. 70 mins.). The film's title signifying a series of random and
meaningless words is a remarkable film. Itself, is the first feature-length
film in the history of Spanish cinema painted entirely in the camera-less
animation technique. Sistiaga uses 35mm celluloid as a blank, transparent
canvas, directly applying paint onto the film employing different techniques.
Taking 17 months to complete, and lacking figurative elements or sound
accompaniment, the result is an indescribable experience and designed to be
experienced projected in a darkened cinema.
