mount: ufs filesystem not available

1999-09-21 Thread gramond lamoureux

Thanks for all the suggestions,
Here are some followup comments to some suggestions

* '...get a copy of mount...' I was not able to mount
anything so I could not copy from the floppy.

* '... why not start with 3.3 ...' I just got the hang
of cvsup so I wanted to try upgrade and make world

* '... use picobsd ...' I'm not familiar enough but
after reading it sound really interesting. Specially
since a have a small 486 with 8 meg, network cards but
no drive. sounds like it could be a good router

Finally, I solve my problem this way, probably not
recommended but it worked. I started with my 2.2.6
install disk. Created the mount points and rebooted.
This allowed to get access to /usr so I could get ee
to work and copy etc to a floppy. (ok I should do
backups more often) but for me backup only work when
I don't need them. Once I got my /etc. I restart the
install of 2.2.6 and then copied the files back. Ho
yea, made the mistake and copied passwd, then I could
no longer logon. So did it over and now it works. I
would like to start with 3.3 but I could not find the
install disk for that. So I'll try again the upgrade.
But I'm better prepared this time.

Thanks
Gramond

Why do that when he could just install 3.3?

As someone already mentioned, you shouldn't cross post. As a new user you
also shouldn't be running -current. :) That said, it sounds like you could
benefit from what's available at
http://freebsd.simplenet.com/make-upgrade.html. You will have to reinstall
your 2.2.6, then follow ALL of the instructions on that page. You should
also subscribe to and read the freebsd-stable mailing list, and your
upgrade should be to 3.3-Stable.

Good luck,

Doug

You probably forgot to update at least one of: your kernel, or /etc (see
mergemaster port).

You're right that you shouldn't be running -current if you have to
cross-post to -newbies as well. If you really want to do this, then fine,
but please don't expect help with any problems you run into; you're
expected to know what you're doing on this mailing list.

You might want to play with 3.3 instead, since that's different enough
from 2.2.6 to give you something to do.

Thanks!
Kris

You should probably back up your important data and install
3.3 directly.

mount: ufs filesystem not available

1999-09-19 Thread gramond lamoureux

I was trying to upgrade from 2.2.6 to current using cvsup, then used
make world. All went well, ( I was in single user mode) then I tried
to reboot and I get the message
mount: ufs filesystem not available.

if I do fsck and see all my mount points and they have no errors but I
can't reboot.
mount -a gives me
3 (mount: ufs filesystem not available)
modload: creating procfs-mod: Read-only file system
procfs: vsfload(procfs): operation not permitted
mount: ufs filesystem not available

You'll probably say, he newbies should not be doing this, but
everything goes so well I thaugh id try something more exiting.

Any ideas before I go back to my 2.2.6 cd and start over?

Mario... thanks
