ANNOUNCE: Custom 64bit FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE with XFCE packages released

Hey all,

I have just completed the first 8.1-RELEASE based build of the 'Custom
releases' project hosted here:

http://freebsd-custom.wikidot.com

At the moment only the 64bit version is available, while a 32bit
version is in the works and is expected later on this week.

You may download the ISO file immediately using the downloads page:

http://freebsd-custom.wikidot.com/downloads-page

This release is based on the latest XFCE desktop and includes a wide
variety of desktop-related packages, like OpenOffice, abiword, gnumeric,
firefox35, gimp, inkscape, evince and so on. The base system is
8.1-RELEASE. A few other small window managers are included like
windowmaker, fluxbox and icewm.

Make sure to read the README file before installation.

Also note that installing linux related packages during initial setup
needs a few
more  steps. This is due to differences in sysinstall between 7.X and
8.X releases. A detailed explanation is provided in the README file.

Hi Malcolm,

I don't use linux-firefox but have previously encountered problems
printing via lpd from Acrobat Reader which use the linux compatibility
sub-system.

You might find the thread containing this message useful for a little
background info:

It looks as though the linux_base package now includes the "lp" script
suggested in that message:

For some time now I have been happily printing via lpd from Acrobat
Reader to a network-connected postscript printer by selecting the
"Custom" printer option in Acrobat Reader's "print" dialogue using its
default "/usr/bin/lp" command.

I can't run the native firefox that I normally use at the moment so
cannot check what options firefox offers in its print dialogue but I
hope this info gives you some kind of lead to help you resolve the
problem.

fnd cause "panic: page fault"

[n dhert]

Sometimes my FreeBSD8.0-p4 machine does an automatic reboot after
panic: page fault. (Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode)
It's at random times.
What in general can be the cause of that?
Is it always due to hardware memory errors?

What else can be a cause, how to find out ?
I have output in /var/crash but don't understand very much of it
and don't know where to look to find the cause.
please help ..

This is a followup to note that it does work when I run it on native
hardware instead of under VirtualBox.  My version of VirtualBox is an
old one (2.1.4) running under Linux, so maybe it has some bugs. I had
installed FreeBSD under VirtualBox, but installed to a primary
partition specifically so that I could later boot directly into it.
The odd thing is that I have a similar FreeBSD 7.3 installation which
does work properly under VirtualBox.

Now if I could just figure out why gnus doesn't work right under emacs
I could finish migrating from Linux to FreeBSD.

Did you try realtime monitoring your network interface?

# route -n get 
interface: 

# netstat -I  -w 1

Do you see errors on the interface?

# netstat -I 

Another trick to eliminate disk io from the equation is to use nc:

machine1 :
# nc -o -l 2000 > /dev/null

machine2:
# dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=50 | nc machine1 2000

Actually, pitchforks typically have four.  Two would be a fauchard or
military fork -- a weapon of war.  Tridents, meanwhile, are better suited
to fishing, while pitchforks are designed to sling hay on a farm.  None
of the above have anything to do with devils, per se, though pitchforks
are occasionally portrayed in devilish images for some reason.  I'd think
there wouldn't be much hay surviving in a lake of fire, though.

Not all Hindu deities have that many arms, y'know.  Ayyappa, Rama, and

mrtg-2.16.2_6,1 does not run with perl-5.12.1_1

Hi list

After upgrading perl according to UPDATING, I cannot use mrtg anymore. The
error message is:

Bareword "P_DETACH" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.12.1/MRTG_lib.pm line 1172.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/local/bin/mrtg line 89.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/local/bin/mrtg line 89.

I filled a PR on this but haven't seen any answers/solutions:

Am I the only one having this problem?

If the port needs upgrading (as suggested in my PR), but this does not
happen, how can I fix it myself?

You'd lose `-O2' compiler-specific optimization. If you want to retain
it use DEBUG_FLAGS, e.g.

  DEBUG_FLAGS = -ggdb

Ports that build using bsdmake don't really need the second line as well
as buildworld.

Gigabit ethernet from a 2.8 GHz P4 to or from MacPro I am only limited by disk 
data rate. About 60 MB/sec on one end of the disk, more on the other end of the 
disk.

You want USB (assuming you did put the image on an actual memstick and not  
a CD or some other such oddity), but you may have tried that and had the  
some problem I was.


I just did a memstick install yesterday and it wouldn't let me select USB  
as the install media, it said not found or something, but stumbled on the  
simple fix:


When it comes time to select the media, go to the 'View/Set various  
installation options' screen instead. Press up-arrow a couple times to get  
to 'Re-scan devices' and press the space bar. In my case, it happens so  
quick that it doesn't look like anything actually happens, but it did  
really do something. Press Q to go back to the install menu, and go ahead  
to 'Media' and pick USB. It should then say 'Using USB device: da0a'.

If by RELENG_8, you mean 8.0 (or pre-8.1), there are a number
of patches for the client side krpc. They can be found at:
http://people.freebsd.org/~rmacklem/freebsd8.0-patches

(These are all in FreeBSD8.1, so ignore this if your client is
already running FreeBSD8.1.)

ps: "lock up" can mean many things. The more specific you can
be w.r.t. the behaviour, the more likely it can be resolved.
For example:
- No more access to the subtree under the mount point is
  possible until the client is rebooted. When a "ps axlH"
  one process that was accessing a file in the mount point
  is shown with WCHAN rpclock and STAT DL.
vs
- All access to the mount point stops for about 1minute
  and then recovers.

Also, showing what mount options are being used by the
client and whether or not rpc.lockd and rpc.statd are
running can also be useful.
And if you can look at the net ttraffic with wireshark
when it is locked up and see if any NFS traffic is
happening can also be useful.

You are supposed to make installkernel before rebooting to single user.

Those figures do  seem a little low.  Some stuff to check:

Are transfers in one direction a lot faster than transfers in the  
other?  If so, the machines and the network switch may not all be  
agreeing on the duplex mode.  Auto-negotiation sometimes fails and can  
lead to a lot of silent collisions, slowing things down dramatically.


How about the disk you're transferring from? Is it limiting the speed?  
Those figures would be fairly normal for a USB 1.0 drive, for example.


Are you sure all the machines involved are operating at 100 mbps?   
I've seen them silently fall back to 10 when there's a bad cable  
involved.

make installworld fails

I am trying to update my FreeBSD 8.0 to FreeBSD 8.1.  Here is the order I  
ran the commands in (all as root):


cd /usr/src
make buildworld
make buildkernel
shutdown now
make installkernel
shutdown -r now
adjkerntz -i
mount -a -t ufs
mergemaster -p
cd /usr/src
make installworld
mergemaster
reboot

But I didn't get to run the last two.  When I run make installworld, I get  
errors telling me that the filesystem is full.  Now, I can assure you it  
is not.  Well, basically, what I am asking is why is the filesystem full  
after installing the new kernel?

Maybe there is something funny with sudo's timestamp directory?  If it 
is mounted with option `noatime' it may have consequences similar to 
what you discribe.

It certainly might, for anyone using the -[kK] options.

However, I can't reproduce it.  Works as advertised when I try your
example.  The only settings in my sudoers file are 
"timestamp_timeout=90,insults,!tty_tickets,!env_reset"
(for my own account only).

And your sudoers file seems to be factory standard.  

I don't think sudo even knows about pam(3), so I'm not sure what could
be happening here...

"USB drive" would probably mean a USB drive that's not the boot drive, 
maybe with a more common file system like FAT32 or NTFS.  That menu 
entry may need rewording.


An extracted CD image isn't a CD any more, so that's not it either.

"File System" is probably the right choice when the installation files 
are in a directory on the USB stick (untested by me, though).

I don't think so. I think this is some kind of management interface? I get the
same messages when I switch off my 5100 AGN.

It puzzles me that it is not seen in the pciconf output. Could it be that the
wireless is disabled in the laptop's BIOS?

this is the standard pc-sysinstall config for gmirror. If you add a +J to
the ufs config it should do what you want

Setting Debug flag in /etc/make.conf

I have been having problems with several different programs lately.
Would there be any serious drawback to simply setting: "WITH_DEBUG= "
in the /etc/make.conf file to force everything I build/rebuild to be
built with debug symbols? I am assuming that I can simply place that
flag in the make.conf file. Do I have to also give it a value; i.e "=1"
or "=yes" also?

AFAIK, it was broken on 7.2, but the good news is that FTP install seems to
work pretty well.

fdisk on your stick, creating a bootable partition, then newfs to create it
mount the disc1.iso file and copy its content in your new partition

I went to the handbook online, and in 
Section 2.8, Figure 2.27. Choose Installation Media
Option 9 USB is Install from a USB Drive.
That seems to cover your situation.

You can also install from a DOS partition or from an existing filesystem, or
from floppy disk set or FTP server, or from a FreeBSD CD or DVD.

Question on Swapping

I have a question about what I am seeing on several servers.  These are 4 core 
machines with more than the needed memory.  Load is never above .5 and memory 
usually shows over half free.  I have never seen it even close to the limit 
(including buffers).  Basically these are lightly used servers.  However, top 
often shows after a few weeks of uptime that some of the unused gettys are 
swapped out.  I didn't really expect this as lack of memory is not an issue.  
Is there something in FreeBSD 7 and 8 that causes a process thats idle for very 
log times to get swapped out?  I haven't seen anything like that in the various 
documentation files, but it sure looks like thats the 
case.___
