bsd, ext2

2002-10-15 Thread peter vamosi

Hi,

I wonder whether installing any flavour of BSD, be it FREE, Open or Net BSD would be
possible
on the linux ext2 or ext3 partition.
I mean installing and running on, not mounting.

I rememeber seeing some words about on the web where the author presented some
advantage
of it, warning anyhow, that checking of the filesystem must then also be done by Linux
tools if I am
not mistaken

Thanking for any info
Best regards
Peter

It didn't matter. My mailer mangled it anyway. The sysinstall fdisk
will do what you need to do. You delete the extended partition and
then use what is left as a FreeBSD slice.

You can have 4 primary partitions in MS world.

running postifx and qpopper in jail

2002-10-15 Thread Axel Gruner

Hiho.

I trying to get postfix running in my jail. The jail is setup correct
(it starts at boot time and i can login via ssh 192.168.0.101). I
installed postfix and qpopper from the ports (also fetchmail) in the
jail. So, postfix trys to receive mail from the given pop account on my
provider. It ends up with an error message, as i remember, i dont sit in
front of the box right now, it cant find a smtp. So, postfix is not
running in the jail like i thought. I configured postfix in the jail the
same way as on the host system (just changed the domain name), and on
the host system postfix is working perfectly. I stopped postfix on the
host system and reboot my Box, but postfix is not starting in the jail
(and also not on the host system).

So, where are the traps to get a working postifx and qpopper in a jail?

Thanks in advance.

To whom it may concern.

I wiould be interested in learning more about FreeBSD and if this works on
windows 98 platform. If not, how do I use this along with existing OS on my
computer...

200mhz Pentium mmx
280mb RAM
6.5 gb hdd (partion 2.gb and 4.5gb)

I would like to use this as my firewall / ftp / webserver computer
eventually with my cable modem connection.

Is this FREEBSD good for this?

sorry for the questions, but thought I would ask first and be pointed in the
right direction. ;)

thanks for the info in advance.

I believe the typical way to upgrade is to cvsup the sources and do a
buildworld.

If you can't cvsup (small hard drive or whatever), you could delete your
src tree (saving your kernel), use /sysinstall to grab kernel only
source and do the old fashion compile method. NOTE: This is not usually
recommended, but I have had to do it on occation.

using an extended partition for freebsd

2002-10-15 Thread John Daniels

Hi everyone:

I am installing 4.7-REL on a PC with one PRIMARY and one EXTENDED partition.
  The PRIMARY
partition is FAT and I have W98 there. I want to use the EXTENED partition
(the WHOLE partition -
there is currently nothing there) for FreeBSD but I read that FreeBSD needs
to be installed into
a PRIMARY partition.

SYSINSTALL's FDISK program has an option ("Change Type") that lets me change
the EXTENDED
partition to FreeBSD, but I don't know if it is changing the partition to
PRIMARY or just making a
cosmetic Label change. And if it is making the change, will the BIOS
recognize it (will anything
break)

Will SYSINSTALL's FDISK program do what I need it to do? If not, what tool
can I use to change
the EXTENDED partition to a PRIMARY partition?

FYI, SYSINSTALL's FDISK screen is:

Disk Name: ad0
Disk geometry: 4865 cyls/ 255 heads / 63 sectors = 78156225 (38162MB)

   Offset Size EndName PType

12594960 65561265 78156224 ad0s24
extended15
78156225 9135 78165359 -6
 unused0

Thanks in advance,

John

The closest approved method I've identified is to download and burn the
floppy install images, boot from those, and do a binary upgrade from
sysinstall with the source being the ftp server.

the menu you get at the beginning of an install lists selected *ISA*
devices. PCI devices are, indeed, autodetected. (you still have to
enable their respective "drivers", either by compiling them into
your kernel, or loading the appropriate kernel module.)

FreeBSD should highlight all devices that have IRQ conflicts.

Since what you're seeing is most probably an IRQ conflict, that
person is very likely to be right.

upgrade to 4.7 over net?

2002-10-15 Thread Iain

Hi,

I was just wondering if it is possible to upgrade from 4.6.2 -> 4.7 via the
net. Is this possible on a running system?

I have read the stuff about upgrading in the release notes but it is a bit
vague. It says you should try /stand/sysinstall but from the version you are
upgrading to. So does this mean that you copy sysinstall onto the system you
will be upgrading from the CD or from the internet?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Iain.

HELP!!! error installing ports

2002-10-15 Thread Roberto Armenteros

Hi all,

When I downlaoded the ports initially with cvsup I
could install any port by typing "make install". After
I updated the ports a couple of times, I get the error
"make: dont know who to make install. Stop in
/usr/ports..."
Why am I getting this error now and not before? I
tried with lots of different ports and I get the same
error. I would really appreciate any help on this...

   Thanks

Wow, I need to fix up on my understanding of network cards. Affirmative,
the card *does not* appear in the list. It works under Windoze with
automatically detected settings (IRQ 9 and I/O 3800-38FF).

The card was second-hand from a friend and didn't come with the original
package; the Windoze driver was obtained from the web. I googled
configuration of PCI cards resulting in advertisements and spam... so
can you give me a little more tip(s) here :-)? A link to the concept
and/or information ? NIC PCI cards : NIC cards && I/O || IRQ in general
would be greatly appreciated, or any other information that might help
in this matter. I know I'm supposed to "do my homework" in the *BSD
commmunity, but I had far too much from school already :-) (I'm 14 btw,
nice to meet you, great webpage).

Thank you for help so far, or it might be another year of overbloated

KDE 3.1 - Opinions??

Hi. Just started to play with KDE 3.1, even though it's still in beta and
I don't really have time to play with it technically. hehe. Either way,

What I'm generally curious of is other people's opinions of it so

Re: route settings in rc.conf - question, with details.

2002-10-15 Thread Firsto Lasto

Thank you very much for that help - unfortunately Igot the wrong information
and stated the problem slightly incorrect.

In reality, the rc.conf in question is:

defaultrouter="10.10.10.1"

ifconfig_fxp0="inet 10.10.10.2 netmask 255.255.255.0"
ifconfig_fxp0_alias0="inet 20.20.20.2 netmask 255.255.255.0"

so, the router in question that has address 10.10.10.1 also has address
20.20.20.1 - however, either one will work as the default gateway for BOTH
subnets, which is why the rc.conf above works (using one default gateway for
both addresses on fxp0) however, I still get:

/kernel: arplookup 10.10.10.1 failed: host is not on local network

because 20.20.20.2 arplookups 10.10.10.1 and it isn't local. BUT it still
works - all packets from the 20.20.20.2 alias work just fine using
10.10.10.1 as a gateway.

So how do I alter things (that are actually working ok) to get rid of those
error messages ? I think I could do it two ways - one, add a second gateway
for the 20.20.20.0/24 subnet for those aliases, OR ... well actually I guess
that is the only way to do it.

So what is the rc.conf syntax to do that ?

It's PCI, works perfectly under Windows ME, and it is the only nic I

Might actually be an IRQ conflict there, try (if you've got a spare)
shuffling the card along your available PCI slots to see if it gets
mapped properly somewhere else.

Make sure that you've got the bios settings for P 'n P OS toggled to
"NO" / "DISABLED" as well.

You didn't mention whether or not the nic is "onboard" or PCI, but did
it actually ever work under another OS? As far as the installation goes,
if this is the only nic you've got in the box, you'd just have to

make installworld failing with permission denied

2002-10-15 Thread Tillman

Howdy,

When I attempt to "make install world" from a read-only NFS mount I'm
getting a permission error:

Oddly, this safe NFS mount has worked in the past on this box (57 days
ago, 57 days ago according to uptime on it. And this particular build
has installed fine on two other machines using the same NFS read-only
mount of /usr/src and /usr/obj off the build machine. Is there anything
in particular I should be looking for with this sort of permission
problem?

TIA,

If you issue the "prompt" command first, it will turn off (actually
toggle) prompting, so you don't have to answer "y" hundreds
of times.

I.E. log in with ftp, then issue

Linux Compatability and compiling linux program - problem with...

2002-10-15 Thread joe

I am atrying to compile a linux program under FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE. I
have installed linux_base but seem to be missing a number of files,
specifically header files.

Here's a portion of the errors when making the program (by the way, it's
cdparanoia. I am following the lead of a discussion this last week
suggesting the atapicam kernel driver will allow cdparanoia to
work...So I managed to get rebuild the kernel with the driver. Next
step is to build the application)

In file included from scan_devices.c:18:
low_interface.h:28: linux/major.h: No such file or directory
low_interface.h:29: linux/version.h: No such file or directory
low_interface.h:45: scsi/sg.h: No such file or directory
low_interface.h:46: scsi/scsi.h: No such file or directory
low_interface.h:48: linux/cdrom.h: No such file or directory
low_interface.h:49: linux/major.h: No such file or directory
In file included from scan_devices.c:20:
utils.h:1: endian.h: No such file or directory

SoI obviously don't have the header files... Do I need to install the
entire linux src? I am stuck at this point. Is there a port which
provides this source?

CPU_ENABLE_SSE on a P2 Celeron?

2002-10-15 Thread Mark Miller

As far as I can tell, SSE applies only to pentium III cpus and later; is
this correct? dmesg reports for me

CPU: Pentium II/Pentium II Xeon/Celeron (399.10-MHz 686-class CPU)
Origin = "GenuineIntel"  Id = 0x665  Stepping = 5
Features=0x183f9ff

Would enabling SSE in my kernel have any ill (positive) effects?

Thanks

No.

As far as I know, there is no 802.11a support for any free operating
system. The manufacturers are particularly reticent to make their
code available, at least because of regulatory concerns: if you have
the source, you can convert the device to operate outside the allowed
frequency range. The FreeBSD core team has recently approved import
of binary modules for the low-level control of these devices, but the
import itself hasn't happened yet. There's a very good chance that
it will take a lot longer for the GPL community to accept this
restriction.

Re: multiple_file_downloading

2002-10-15 Thread Marco Radzinschi

Use ncftp (in the ports) to download an entire directory. You can use the
-R switch with get, as in "get -R " to fetch a directory and
everything in it.

If you want to download it from Windows, you can use an ftp client like
WS_FTP, which can be found on www.download.com.

The ink on the announcement isn't dry yet and you're already asking

You should know this if you're so worried about it.

Last time there was a must-have upgrade they announced it as a

If you're willing to do the work yourself, FreeBSD 5.0-current uses
gcc 3.x, so you could look at what changed were made to support it
when it was first imported.

Kernel config problem with scbus

2002-10-15 Thread Kevin Stevens

I'm trying to do "old-style" kernel builds with 4.7 (though I've run
into this same issue with earlier releases and other motherboards).

In the Handbook, it says that if you are compiling for an IDE-only
system, you can remove the following:

# SCSI peripherals
device scbus # SCSI bus (required)

However, if I comment this out (along with the various SCSI controllers
and devices), the make fails. I can take everything else out but that
one line and have success.

Can anyone duplicate/explain?

Based on the above information, from a command prompt interface in either

screen. The only way out is a reboot, that I have been able to discover
thus far anyway. I thought I saw something about this somewhere, but my
googling has failed me. Some items to note:

1.) I have compiled agp support into the kernel
2.) I am running my console with the following vidcontrol settings:
 vidcontrol -f 8x8 cp437-8x8
 vidcontrol VGA_80x50
3.) TERM=cons50
4.) I recompiled the Xfree-server with the nv patches

I thought the fix was to add some sort of delay when exiting X, but I
cant find any info on it.

Why are you trying to run "make depend" in /usr/src? The instructions
for building a neww userland and kernel can be found in the file
called /usr/src/UPDATING. Please read that file carefully, especially
the part after:

To update from 4.0-RELEASE or later to the most current

Xfree4.2.1+Nvidia+Inspiron 2650

2002-10-15 Thread Chris Kulish

I am having a problem with the setup in the subject upon exiting X to go
back to the console. When I exit, I end up with a garbled FAST rolling

(http://www.marcuscom.com/g2g-xfree86/article.html)

I thought the fix was to add some sort of delay when exiting X, but I
cant find any info on it.

ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks!

If a user logs in, su's to root, then runs reboot, the original login
name will be recorded.

The reboot binary checks to see if it is running as root, and if it
isn't, it exits with an "Operation not permitted" error.

sis(4) driver error with NetGearFA311

2002-10-15 Thread James Wu

I'm a FreeBSD newbie who have attempted the installation of 4.5 a year
ago when I received problems with my NetGear FA311 (National
Semiconductor). I was told then that installing from floppies does not
offer me the same set of drivers and thus I should use a CD instead. I
got a CD writer this year and as par instructions burned the mini iso of
4.7, and still received the same issue.
According to the hardware list, my NatSemi uses the sis driver, which is
detected at boot time, during which I received:
-snip-
sis0: at device 13.0 on pci1
sis0: couldn't map ports/memory
device_probe_and_attach: sis0 attach returned 6
pci1: (vendor=0x11c1, dev=0x004e)//not sure if it's
part of the error message so putting it on anyway
-snip-
And according to Diagnostics in the documentation "sis%d: couldn't map
ports/memory [indicates] a fatal initialization error has occurred.", I
think it's my error in configuring. Could anyone out there give me a hand?

Thank you, James

-Additional information if needed: is running i686 (Intel celeron), PCI
bridge is Intel82801AA, vendor Hewlett-Packard (HP-Pavilion), other
existing OS: Windows ME *shudder*

newsyslog errors (4.7)

2002-10-15 Thread J.D. Bronson

I noticed the following each night when syslog is running:

(they are logged to the console)

Oct 15 19:14:16 newsyslog[258]: logfile turned over
Oct 15 19:14:16 /kernel: syslogd: /var/log/cron: No such file or directory
Oct 15 19:14:16 /kernel: syslogd: /var/log/maillog: No such file or directory
Oct 15 19:14:16 /kernel: syslogd: /var/log/daemon: No such file or directory
Oct 15 19:14:16 /kernel: syslogd: /var/log/security: No such file or directory

Huh? - these files ARE there and they are fine. But even after a
reboot..each night I see these. Sometimes it is the same file(s) each night
and sometimes it is different.

Everything rotates just fine, but these errors are weird.

It is like syslogd is starting BEFORE the new files are created and hence
dont see the file as actually being there!

Any thoughts?

I can't give you the why, but I remember reading in one of the FBSD mailing lists
essentially that 4.x=no, 5.x=yes regarding making world and kernel with GCC 3.x. My
own experience with 4.x bears that out. OTOH, many applications build just dandy with
GCC 3.x.

strange reboot, permissions of /sbin/reboot

2002-10-15 Thread Andreas Ntaflos

Hello list,
Something strange just occured on a quite busy server running FreeBSD 4.6-RC
as of May 28. First, it seemed to have suddenly rebooted, but not by a
kernel trap or anything like it, the machine has been up for over 120 days,
running smoothly. We checked the logs, seeing that it was rebooted by an
ordinary user (all.log) which comes quite strange to me.

  # ls /sbin/reboot
  -r-xr-xr-x 4 root wheel - 233708 Jan 19 2002 /sbin/reboot*

First I thought someone messed up things bigtime, but checking my system
shows me the same permissions for /sbin/reboot, despite the fact that an
ordinary user on my system can NOT reboot or shutdown anything. We issued a
reboot again as a normal user, just to make sure it was not a mistake and it
did reboot again. It also seems that the first reboot was not initiated by a
user. I am a little confused...how could that happen?

My questions are: what catches the execution of /sbin/reboot for normal
users and how could it happen that the normal user was not caught in that
case? Also, how come that the permissions on reboot and shutdown are the way
  they are?

Can someone point me to some relevant pieces of information?

TIA
regards & good night

We tried a few experiments with GCC 3.2 and parts of our source
code and found performance improvements. We want to see if there
are any similar improvements to the FreeBSD OS if we use GCC 3.2.
I understand that it is not a simple task to just swap compilers
to build the kernel. Would be very interested to know what others
have experienced.

problems with netscape7 on 4.7-release

2002-10-15 Thread Kai Plügge

hi everybody
i got a strange error. i installed netscape 7 on freebsd 4.6-release with no problems.
works really fine. a few days ago i updated to 4.7-release and installed netscape7 the
same way i did with 4.6 (from ports). now, when i start netscape (with
"/usr/local/bin/netscape7english") i got this error:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library libXext.so [libXext.so: cannot open

netscape came up and asked me which profile i wanted to use so i choose the "default".
then it said, netscape couldn't use this profile because it's in use. i created a new
and it worked. but when i closed netscape and run it again it asked me again which
profile to use. so i choose my new created profile and it said again that it can't use
it because it is in use. i rebooted my box but nothing changed. linux_base 6 & 7 are
installed. both SO are in /usr/X11R6/lib/.
i made symbolic links to /usr/local/lib/linux-netscape7-english/ and after i doesn't
solve the problem i tried /usr/local/lib/ but the problem still exists. can anybody
help me?
thank you

The man pages for portupgrade will tell you handy little hints like if

# portupgrade -rR mod_php4
it will actually upgrade all of the dependencies for PHP (and anything
that depended on it too.)

Proxy-arp not working right

2002-10-15 Thread Brent Wiese

I have a 4.5 box w/ the GENERIC kernel loaded.

I've installed mpd and can connect via pptp from a win2k box.

I can see that mpd adds the proxyarp ip entry, however, other machines
on the same subnet can't ping the IP and the win2k box can't ping them.

The FreeBSD box and win2k box ping each other fine.

I can see the arp entry using arp -a:
? (192.168.187.150) at 0:90:27:88:62:dc on fxp0 permanent published
(proxy only) [ethernet]

I can also see the arp entry in my router, but the router cannot ping
it. I've confirmed it is the correct MAC.

I used the exact same account on the win2k box to pptp to a snapgear vpn
box (it runs poptop) and it worked fine, so I believe everything is
correct on the win2k side.

Am I missing something? Any more info I can provide?

I suppose I should have added that this is the address of one of our primary
routers. It also has an IP address on the network that my FreeBSD machine
lives on. After all, it's a router. It's responsible for routing traffic
between these two networks.

Any idea why it's causing my machine to throw arplookup failures? Any ideas

Re: Monitor IP Traffic from many BSD computers

2002-10-15 Thread BigBrother

A nice solution which I make use is:

a) install a SNMPD client on every box

/usr/ports/net/net-snmp

b) change the community string to something else than `public`

c) create sample config file for snmpd

d) install MRTG

/usr/ports/net/mrtg

e) Configure MRTG to be daemon and query every 5 minutes the SNMPD on all
the boxes.

f) If u like security :) use firewall to protect the SNMP port!

I am using this setup on my local cluster. It works nicely!

p.s. Of course if u like something more thatn measuring bandwidth then u
can run a sniffer on every machine and forward the results to a main
server, or u could capture the packets in raw form in a file and another
workstation to be used to analyze these packets.

Re: monitor ALL connections to ALL ports

2002-10-15 Thread BigBrother

It sounds to me that you are looking for a Network Intrusion system.

1)
try:

/usr/ports/security/snort

It has plenty of rules that can help you log whatever u like.

2)
Also another possibility is to use

tcpdump host -w

which will log all the packets heading for your IP
in raw form in the logifle. TCPdump has many swithches.

The format of the logfile is in libcap format and there
are plenty of parsers of this file [including tcpdump, ethereal, snort]

IMO, try to log ALL connections to ALL ports ONLY if ur
box is faster than a PIII, 500Mhz, 256 RAM.

Darryl: If your ports are ups to date and has the version of PHP you want.
Just goto:
# cd /var/db/pkg
# pkg_delete
# cd /usr/ports/path_to_php
# make install clean

Should do it.

Re: CDs Won't Continue from song to song.

2002-10-15 Thread Matthias Trevarthan

OK. I see. That works now. Is there any way to do this with KsCD (KDE app),
or the command line cd player utility??

My XMMS locks up the computer sometimes. It's the only CD Player app I have
that locks it up like that. I get error messages about the CDROM driver not
being able to talk to the CDROM, and it pauses my system every 5 seconds. The
only way to fix it is the reboot. (Can't figure out how to kill hup the CD
driver... don't know if it's possible...)

Anyway, if I could get my entire playlist to play with KsCD, that would be
super neat.

Thanks for all the advice!

i have a few 370 with the same raid controller. one one there was a similiar
problem that the rebuild is done, but the leds never come up again as they
should. the small leds works as usual, but the drive leds still shows no
completed process. but the ida soft errors gone away and the drive works as
raid 5 without ptobs and the rebuild should be ok because changing another
hot plugged hard drive worked.

floppy problems

2002-10-15 Thread Wayne Lubin

Hi,

I used to mount my msdos floppy with the command

mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

but then after forgetting to umount it before shutting
the system down one evening I now get the error
message

msdos: /dev/fd0: Device not configured

dmesg lists only the following device that I think
pertains to the floppy

fdc0: at port 0x3f0-0x3f5,0x3f7
irq 6 drq 2 on isa0

Furthurmore /dev does contain devices fd0 but does NOT
contain fdc0.

I even tried the following command

mount -t msdos /dev/fd0.1440 /mnt/floppy

and got the same error message

msdos: /dev/fd0.1440: Device not configured

and yes /dev/fd0.1440 does exist.

Also I tried

mount -t msdos /dev/fdc0 /mnt/floppy

and get the error message

msdos: /dev/fdc0: No such file or directory

Should I just remake the fd0 driver? If so do I just
first delete the current fd0 first and then do a
MAKEDEV? Or do you think maybe that my floppy hardware
is shot because I am no longer getting the fd0 driver
listed during a dmesg printout.

Thanks for your help.

Both. Set a rule to block everything but pppoe on rl0, and do the usual

Compaq RAID - drive replacement - array rebuild problem

2002-10-15 Thread Joseph Moore

I'm running 4.x STABLE (as of March 2001, aka 4.3RC#0) on a compaq DL380
with integrated RAID (ida0). It had been running flawlessly for over a year
until one of the drives failed. I replaced the dead drive (hot-plugged) and
re-booted to start the array rebuild process. This was a couple of months
ago and the new drive is still flashing it's LEDs to indicate that the
rebuild is still underway. I re-booted the box and when the array controller
initialized it displayed a message saying that it would "continue the
automatic rebuild". How do I get this array rebuild to finish? It's a RAID 1
config with 2, 18GB drives mirrored in hardware.

Those two lines are the last thing that appear on screen, once it reaches
that point it simply sits there for eternity. I attempted to use the 5.0
current kernel and it stopped at the same point, however, it did recognize
that it was a multimedia device, and that it had no driver for it. I was
able to install Mandrake, without sound support, with no problems. Thanks
again for the help.

bind with TSIG needs chgrp bind /etc/namedb

2002-10-15 Thread Dan Langille

I've been adding TSIG to varioius domains. But I've found that on my
slavee servers, I've had to set the directory permissions as this:

$ ls -ld /etc/namedb/
drwxrwxr-x 4 root bind 512 Oct 15 09:26 /etc/namedb/
$ ls -ld /etc/namedb/secondary/
drwxr-x--- 2 bind bind 512 Oct 15 09:25 /etc/namedb/secondary/

named is running as: /usr/sbin/named -u bind -g bind

Some bits from /etc/namedb/named.conf:

options {
directory "/etc/namedb";

...

An example TSIG'd domain is:

key 2002100400.katy.com.tsigkey. {
algorithm "hmac-md5";
secret "DpTh3OpfpeZrbvV6kwDKcDaPIOeWn0b5MmUc/kqD57Q=";
};

zone "example.org" {
type slave;
file "secondary/example.org.db";
masters { 192.168.0.98 key 2002100400.katy.com.tsigkey.; };
};

Without setting the chmod, I will get these errors upon ndc reload:

named[89]: write_tsig_info: mkstemp(tsigs.RTdOEg) for TSIG info
failed
named[89]: unable to write tsig info: 'example.org'

I don't like having to put change the permissions on /etc/namedb.
Any other ideas?

No, you just need to set "type" in rc.conf. If you look closely at
rc.firewall, it reads your rc.conf file to check the settings. Leave the
type alone in rc.firewall.

Hope this clarifies

If I'm not wrong, rc.firewall ist just a script that will be started with the
parameters you determined in rc.conf. So, if you determined as firewall_type
e.g. OPEN only the statements in the subsection OPEN in rc.firewall will be
executed and not the others in the subsections like SIMPLE or CLOSED.

This unfortunately breaks our quotas using groups for accounts with
multiple FTP logins...

There has to be a constant somewhere defining the maximum number of
group memberships. Or maybe I just have to wait for the ACLs in 5.0 to
become reasonably stable...

rc.conf sets some variables, but does not actually set anything up (in
the default install type). rc.firewall sees the values you set in
rc.conf, and can use them.

You should only set firewall_type once, and the only rc file you need to
change is rc.conf. You could set it in rc.firewall, and that would
replace rc.conf's value, but that would also defeat the whole purpose of
rc.conf.

Make sense? rc.conf is kind of like a centralized file to store all of
your rc related settings... That way you don't need to change the more
complicated files, such as rc.firewall.

Double click on one song doesn't play the whole playlist. You have to select
all and then select play. Also make sure you didn't turn on 'No Playlist Advance' in
XMMS (ctrl-n).

I recently set up CVS 'pserver' service under Linux-2.4.* for WinCvs and
*nix cvs users. Circa early summer, the NT cvs server notes mentioned
problems dealing with MsWin clients, but not *nix.

I noticed some differences between *nix and MsWin clients handling
explicit root definitions but nothing I saw as an outright failure or
breakage. (IIRC, I had to put _something_ in the password field, even for
a no-password user -- in a DOS script for example -- or get the password
prompt.) *nix clients all worked fine, but this wasn't the MsWin server
(the name of which I forget).

Sorry, I mean is:
What is the relation between firewall_type in /etc/rc.conf and the same

You'll need to use the sendmsg() and recvmsg() functions to pass the
descriptor. See the unix(4), and recvmsg(2) manpages for more info.

ipfiltering and ppoe question

2002-10-15 Thread Tim Radigan

hi people.. i have question regarding ipfiltering and pppoe..

here at the office we have a pppoe connection.. i'm using ipfiltering to
block packets, etc.. now.. my question..

when ppp connects via pppoe, my nic (rl1) is not assigned an external ip
address.. however, the tun0 interface is.. when i'm designing my
ipf.rules file, should i set the rules to block and/or pass on rl1, or
the tun0 interface?

same goes for my ipnat.rules file.. should i map the rl1 interface or
the tun0 interface?

any help would be appreciated..

How can i use the socket that created by a child in parent?

2002-10-15 Thread alireza mahini

I create a stream socket in a child process and i want
to use it outside of child.
main(){
int sd;
int fd[2];
char buf[20];
 pipe(fd));
 if(!fork()){
   sd=socket();
   ...
   ...
  write(fd[1]);//write sd to the pipe
 }
read(fd[0],...)//read sd from pipe
send(sd,);//error is occured in this line at
executing the program
...
}
I understand that the descriptors don't send via pipe
to the outside of childs so guide me please.

RE: microuptime() went backwards, FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE

2002-10-15 Thread Andy Knapp

I've actually had this problem before, and I am pretty sure that it is a
problem with the apm line in the generic kernel. Have you made a
customized kernel? if not, i would suggest doing that and getting rid of
all the apm lines; after that i never received these messages again.

HTH,
Andy

btw: if you do a search in the mailing list archives for "microuptime"
you can find everything you need.

make fails (4.6.2)

2002-10-15 Thread PETN

Hi,

I just edited my GENERIC file to fit my Toshiba Tecra8000 laptop and
everything is
configured properly I think.
the "config KERNEL" command worked and produced no errors, but when
I try to do a "make depend" in the /usr/src directory, I recieve the
following error
message over and over again all the time:

#Cut
===> libexec/rshd
===> libexec/talkd
make: don't know how to make ttymsg.c. Stop
*** Error code 2

Stop in /usr/src/libexec.
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/src.
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/src.
sc_bsd#
#End Cut

So what can I do to make "ttymsg.c" ??

Thanks in advance,

Philipp

Well, I "never" do it that way so I can't help you. I would just do it this way

cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf

cp GENERIC NEWNAME

vi NEWNAME

edit it the way you want or need

save it

cd /usr/src

make buildkernel KERNCONF=NEWNAME

make installkernel KERNCONF=NEWNAME

Sorry, I forgot to tell this: I'm using FreeBSD 4.6.2, too.
I compiled kernel with "old" way:

mozilla freezing...

2002-10-15 Thread Daniel Frazier

greetz all,

For a while now mozilla has been consistantly freezing on me when
accessing a couple of specific pages that are on sites I read daily.
I've been rebuilding mozilla weekly in hopes that one day I'd find
that the problem had been fixed. Well, on friday I reinstalled mozilla
again, only to find that I had worsened the situation. Now, in
addition to the same behavior I was seeing before, mozilla will freeze
any time I click a submit button in a form. Any form, even the mailing
list search function on the freebsd website, will cause mozilla to
freeze as soon as I click submit. Since friday I've nuked XFree86 and
gnome and reinstalled them both hoping for a shotgun fix, cvsup'd
ports a couple of times amd I also made world and brought my maching up
to STABLE, but there's still no joy in mudville tonight.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior with mozilla before? have any
idea what's going on or have an idea on what I can try next? I'm
running out of ideas here...

let me know if there's any additional info that might be helpful and
I'll gladly supply it...
