Re: is 4.11 still a good idea?

Your point conflicts with the previous reply, that 5.3 is too cutting-edge.
By the way, is there native support for Java 1.4 on FreeBSD 5.x? It
broke in my ports installation. I did manage to get the Linux compatible
version up though.

It's certainly not very active. Some developers still have an

5-CURRENT amd64 performance versus i386 performance on same HW

2005-05-08 Thread Chad Leigh -- Shire.Net LLC
I was wondering if anyone has done performance tests, especially
network and disk IO tests on an opteron system, or preferably a dual
opteron system, using the 5-CURRENT or similar codebase for both the
amd64 release as well as the i386 release. I am wondering how the
amd64 codebase compares to the i386 codebase on identical HW. This
is for a server type use.

I have a single processor opteron that will be put into use as a
firewall[PF]/router/vpn-gateway for a bunch of other internet servers
and was wondering whether to go with the amd64 or the i386 versions
of FreeBSD. My other opteron (dual) is running i386 version as I had
some linux and java needs which at the time I put it into service,
was not readily available on amd64 (which may have changed by now).

Thanks

Don't know about the error.
But for getting the sound support, you can also
simply load the sound modules:

  # kldload sound
  # kldload snd_ess

after which you can try sound.
For future reboots put this in /boot/loader.conf:

  sound_load="YES"
  snd_ess_load="YES"

Yes, agreed. I think that the McKusick book would be better, though.

My advice is "forget it". It's very old and refers to System V.2. If
you want a System V book, the Magic Garden by Goodheart and Cox is a
better choice.

Hi:

Let me just say that I have only setup lpd on OpenBSD. I use CUPS on
FreeBSD. I am going from memory here.

You need to get the ljet4 PPD file from here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_5P

and the foomatic rip script from here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/download.cgi?filename=foomatic-rip&show=0

The foomatic script runs your *.PPD file (PPD = PstScript Printer Description)

The details are given here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/lpd-doc.html

> printcap looks like this:
>
> lp|HP Laserjet 5P:\
> :sh:\
> :sd=/var/spool/lpd:\
> :lf=/var/log/lpd:\
> :lp=/dev/lpt0:\
> :if=/etc/lpfilter:

then you need this /etc/printcap
  lp|HP Laserjet 5P:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
:af=/path/to/ppd/file:\
:if=/path/to/foomatic-rip:\
:sd=/path/to/spool/directory:\
:mx#0:sh:

then follow the directions in Section 11.3.1.4.3 "Making the Spooling
Directory", of the FreeBSD Handbook.

> Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I realize this is kind of vague but I set up printing once about 6
months ago and have forgotten all the details. Hey, that is the beauty
of *BSD. I only have to configure something once and then it works for
a long time.

vmware with WinXP as guest....

2005-05-08 Thread Eric Schuele
Hello,
I'm interested in vmware (or vmware comparable solutions)... and can't
seem to find a suitable source of info. I know its in the ports. I've
done a fair amount of googling... but everything seems to be regarding
running it with an XP host and a FreeBSD guest. I am looking for info
on the reverse.

I am interested in issues regarding installation and configuration. I
have a need to run WindowsXP as the guest OS... and would like info on
any 'gotchas'. Will I need a license of any sort? Anyone using this
config? etc...

I am running 5.4-STABLE i386.
I was hoping someone might be able to offer opinions/comments/pointers.
Thanks.

You should look at the apsfilter port in /usr/ports/print/apsfilter.
It contains all the magic needed to get a LaserJet 5p to work properly.
It was the only filter that seemed to do the right thing for me.

2005-05-08 Thread Ted Mittelstaedt

1) Copy a MSDOS text file to the system (one that contains ^M^L as each
line terminator)

2) cat file /dev/lpt0

If the file doesen't come out the printer, it's a problem with the
parallel post hardware, or the cabling.

Unable to set up LPD to use a HP Laserjet 5p in freeBSD 5.3

2005-05-08 Thread modelt20
Hello

I`m trying to install my HP laserjet 5p on freebsd 5.3.
The printer doesn`t understand postscript.
I`ve read the handbook and installed ghostscript and
lpd.
I changed rc.conf to start lpd for each system boot.

dmesg printer part looks like this:

ppbus0: HP ENHANCED
PCL5,PJL
lpt0: on ppbus0
lpt0: Interrupt-driven port
ppi0: on ppbus

printcap looks like this:

lp|HP Laserjet 5P:\
:sh:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd:\
:lf=/var/log/lpd:\
:lp=/dev/lpt0:\
:if=/etc/lpfilter:

Whenever I try to print to the printer, I get an error
status on the printer that the owners manual calls a
"Data Error" (two lights on the panel). The 'Go' button
must be pressed repeatedly to get the page to print;
and it doesn't look complete. I've used several of the
lpfilters from the ports collection, but none seems to
work.

Has anyone set up this printer model to work in freeBSD
5.3 and can shed some light on what I have done wrong?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

scripting sysinstall / how to get NIC name in config file

2005-05-08 Thread User vr
hi,
i'm trying to customize a CD for remote office
installations and one of the problems I need to figure
out is how to get the name for the first network
interface to stick it in install.cfg. In linux it will
always be eth0. In my case
I am dealing with either xl, fxp, rl or ed interfaces,
but I don't know what hardware will be used before
hand. Is there a way to reference the first ethernet
interface in sysinstall config file without knowing
what its exact name will be?

thanks in advance,
slava.

The BSD slice is all one filesystem "/"
When my system boots it gives:
F1 . . . DOS
F2 . . . FreeBSD
Default F?
When I press F1 I get DOS
When I press F2 the boot prompt repeats.
I have tried to BOOTINST again. The same thing remains.
What's wrong?
Is there a way to boot BSD from DOS?

What damage have you caused to yourself by your own words that would in
any way involve responsibility by the list host? What, exactly, have
you lost monetarily by posting in your own words on this list? If you
have lost money by posting here, you need to be able to prove it. If
you haven't lost money, or you can't prove it, you do not have a leg to
stand on in court. And, finally, the copyright of postings to this list

Thank you, you are correct - I found a previous post for a similar
question.
For those interested it was the umass device:

From *Matt Emmerton *Feb. 2005 -
You've got "device umass" in your kernel, but you've commented out the
SCSI-related devices which are required.
You need to uncomment "device scbus" and "device da" in order to use "device
umass".
It worked for me too!
Thanks Matt and Kris.

First of all, please to not top-post. It disturbs the normal flow of
reading.

But to answer your question, if your PC's devices are all correctly
working with FreeBSD drivers and if you don't use power management I see
no great need for ACPI. Laptops might need the power management
component of ACPI. Some motherboards use ACPI to let you read out things
like temperatures and fan speeds. But those can mostly also be
discovered by other programs.

You are only claiming that they do. US law does not specify that they
are nor does the Berne convention.

Maybe in another 50 years or so the next time the international copyright
convention meets and ratifies this then you might become correct - once
of course, that all the countries in the world sign off on the treaty
modifications.
But until then, you are just postulating.

The idea that a country would approve copyright rights that are far over
and
above Berne is preposterous - if they did so they would face retaliation
from
the rest of the world. That is why Berne exists in the first place.

I already posted. Fair Use. And, from Berne:

Sure they could, because someone would sue them claiming that their dull
fork slipped and as a result they suffered injury, and they should have
put
a warning label on the fork.

You, Anthony, apparently want to live in a world were you pick up a fork
and it either says:

"Warning: this fork is sharp and the user could suffer injury from it if
they stab themselves"

or

"Warning: this fork is dull and the user could suffer injury from it if
they slip while attempting to spear a piece of food and stab themselves"

And of course you want the warning in 15 different languages.

Thankfully, most people don't wish to live in this kind of world.

No "tool" is needed, as long as you have FreebSD's shell, sed & grep:

$ find . | while read fname ;do

Disabling ACPI seems to solve problems for a lot of people who use
FreeBSD/amd64.

Add hint.acpi.0.disabled="1" to boot/device.hints to see if it works in
your case.

(I forget to add a for or foreach line!)

If there is a large number of files (i.e. if the command is too
long - error: "Argument list too long")

try something like:

find -X . -type f -print | xargs -L 1 perl -pi.bak -e's/\015//'

Don't forget to do a backup copy of your original files!
If filenames should be protected (enclosed in "" or '' ) the -X find

I've never had to use this myself, but I would expect that something like:
interface "foo" {
...
supersede domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1;
...
}
would do the trick in your case.

I also wonder about creating a dhclient-exit script that would update

It's a question of letting DNS traffic _in_ to your nameserver:

pass in on $ext_if inet proto { tcp, udp } \
from any to ($ext_if) port 53

^^^ that lets the traffic in

pass out on $ext_if inet proto { tcp, udp } \
from ($ext_if) port 53 to any

^^^ and that lets it back out.

If you add the "query-source address * port 53;" to your named.conf
"options" section, that'll suffice; additionally, since your DNS query
source port is then predictable, you can drop it from the DNS and NTP
rule.

/etc/resolv.conf and your ISP

2005-05-08 Thread Forrest Aldrich
I can think of a few ways to resolve this, but I thought to ask here.

I have Comcast for my ISP, and of course DHCP changes /etc/resolv.conf
during each update -- lately, they've been screwing things up bigtime,
such that I simply use my own "named" instance.

My question is: how to reliably keep your own nameserver in
/etc/resolv.conf, and get around the frequent protocol updates that
change/nullify your mods to /etc/resolv.conf.

Perhaps just a regular script that does a diff and patch of it, or
simply copies over the file you want regularly. Not elegant but it
would work.

I also wonder about creating a dhclient-exit script that would update
certain services automatically when your IP changes.

Thx.

Good day all!
I am aware of the port unix2dos (dos2unix) as a tool to
remove ^Ms from ASCII files.
But if you execute dos2unix in a directory where some files
contain ^M (CR/LF) and some files don't (CR), then dos2unix
will make a mess of those files who don't.
I am wondering what is needed (what tool or what code) to
do a mass (recursive) removal of ^Ms?
Thanks!

Disabling ACPI seems to solve problems for a lot of people who use
FreeBSD/amd64.

Add hint.acpi.0.disabled="1" to boot/device.hints to see if it works in
your case.

FreeBSD on AMD 64 Boot Lock Up - ACPI Related

2005-05-08 Thread Joseph Borg
Hi,
I'm a newbie to freebsd. I've just installed the AMD64 version (5.4 RC 3) on
my system (Asus A8V Deluxe Motherboard). The install off the CD's went fine,
and I was really happy that Freebsd supports the Promise SATA RAID
controller (currently have to Sata Disks in RAID 1 Mirror configuration).

However, I'm not facing a problem when the system boots. Occasionally, the
system locks up just after the following message:

May 8 19:34:49 cronus kernel: Timecounter "TSC" frequency 1802318528 Hz
quality 800
May 8 19:34:49 cronus kernel: Timecounters tick every 1.000 msec

This doesn't always happen; it typically happens once every 3 reboots.
Initially I thought it was CD-ROM related since usually the following line
loads after the 'Timecounter' ones:

May 8 19:34:49 cronus kernel: acd0: DVDR at
ata0-master PIO4

When this happens, the system freezes completely; only a hard reset will
'solve' the problem. In trying to search the archives, I've come across some
other people with the same problem and the issue seems to be ACPI related.
In fact, when I boot Freebsd without ACPI support, this never seems to
happen (although it could be coincidence). I've also added the following
line to /boot/loader.conf:

debug.acpi.disabled="CPU"

This seems to have reduced the problem but not eliminated it completely.
I've also tried using FreeBSD 5.3 (i.e. stable), but this seems to have the
same problem.

Any ideas on what the problem could be? If so how should I go about solving
it?

Should I disable ACPI completely? If so, how should I go about doing this
and how will it affect my system?

Thanks,

Joe

You're really funny. At any web page related to lists of FreeBSD
(http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions) you can
read " To see the collection of prior postings to the list, visit the
freebsd-questions Archives.".

I also suppose you knew the existance of web bots that search engines
use to index any web page it finds. Of course since the archives are
web pages, the archives are indexed by every search engines.

Also I wonder what you mean by "privacy". Indeed you sent messages to
a public list where anybody can subscribe to and read messages. Also
don't come here in Europe. Any communication can be listened by the
USA using their echelon network.

Who are YOU to impose YOUR perception of:

"conscience, ethics, and the Golden Rule."

Whos to say your perception of it is in violation of someone elses,
where that someone else lives in some other part of the world?

Are you now saying that only you are capable of setting the compus on
how every human ought to live, think, believe, and conduct themselves?

See - that's the awesome thing about a public forum - one is free to
voice his/her own points of view. No matter how they may differ from
yours. And, with that being said - how can there be any infringement?

The only infringement I see - is that someone's "conscience, ethics, and
the Golden Rule" may differ from yours.

And in that case - it's just a point of view. No crime, no foul.

If I comment out or remove xhtml11.cat from catalog.ports, OpenJade
works just fine without a single error.

I'm not intimately familiar with DTDs or stylesheets, so any help would
be greatly appreciated.

But order as in tidyness, or to bring order to chaos.

The differences are very petite.

You can also have a look at http://www.pcbsd.org/

From their website :

PC-BSD has as its goals to be an easy to install and use desktop OS, which is
built on the FreeBSD operating system. To accomplish this, it currently has a
graphical installation, which will enable even UNIX novices to easily install
and get it running. It will also come with KDE pre-built, so that the desktop
can be used immediately. Currently in development is a graphical software
installation program, which will make installing pre-built software as easy
as other popular operating systems.

It's better than being successfully sued or prosecuted for infringement.

There can be little doubt that posts are indeed protected by copyright,
as they fall within the scope of materials that are so protected. The
only question is the degree to which this copyright can be successfully
enforced. However, successful enforcement of a law isn't necessary to
make the law valid, especially in torts.

No, it does not. It does not extend the publication of your message

How would you prove that he obtained your keys illegitimately? Having
the keys provides prima facie evidence that he was authorized to enter
the house.

If they enter with a valid user name and password, then again that is
strong evidence that they were authorized to use the system. The fact
that it may be due to the system owner's negligence won't help.

No, there are many ways to leave open doors. Someone who correctly
guesses a user name and password can walk through an open door.

A single lawsuit could close down FreeBSD by eliminating most of its

I've been considering that, since I don't really get much out of the

But there is nothing else when it comes to FreeBSD--one of the
