I had a ssd drive in a system to use as temp backup server, it has 6 1tb
drives in it that i created a raid0 (i'm pretty sure that's what I
created) and used as a backup, to rebuild our file server. the ssd drive
was taken back after a couple weeks as the box was no longer being used.
At this point I need to check whats on that array due to some data
corruption. The drives in the array are probably not plugged in as they
were when used before. Is it possible, and if so how, to recover that
array? I've popped in a different system drive and have got the box back
up, I thought there'd be a way to read the labels on the drives and
recreate the raid set.. am i wrong?

RE: degraded RAID performance after OS upgrade, and drives added.

2006-11-30 Thread Derrick MacPherson
That seems like a pretty crazy drop in performance, more than one would expect.
The machine is busy but not busy enough to warrant this.. Imo.. Is there a way
to test to confirm?

It's normal for RAID-5 to perform worse than a single drive-- and
sometimes it performs much worse, as in nearly an order of magnitude
slower, for the case of very small writes. If you value performance,
choose another RAID level like RAID-0, RAID-1, or RAID-10.

degraded RAID performance after OS upgrade, and drives added.

2006-11-29 Thread Derrick MacPherson
We updated to 6.1 this weekend and added 3 300gb drives to the
external raid cabinet, they were to go on a seprate controller but
the server happens to have a few other boxes on top making it
impossible at that time, so we put the 3x300 (RAID5) , upgraded the
OS and performance is very poor. When I run systat I see upward of
300 tps on the problematic array (da2) and under systat -vmstat :

Disks da0 da1 da2 pass0 pass1 pass2
KB/t 0.00 0.00 15.00 0.00 0.00 0.00

MB/s 0.00 0.00 4.99 0.00 0.00 0.00
% busy0 095 0 0 0

the busy percentage is consistenly over 90% sometimes over 100%. I'm
not sure where to go next with providing info for someone to look at
or testing to run..

Spamd keeps falling over

2006-03-11 Thread Derrick MacPherson
I have had spamd die about 3 times in the last couple days, this is what
I saw in the logs this morning:

Mar 11 06:00:37 mail spamd[28178]: prefork: ordered child to accept, but
child reported state '1' at
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/Mail/SpamAssassin/Spam

dForkScaling.pm line 390

What does it mean?

Can I get some suggestions on an application that will monitor this
process and if it dies restart it?

Yes - I can see running STABLE (or CURRENT for that matter) on a

Wow, if I could use that sarcasm to fuel my car I'd be happy. I guess we
would be the only people to run current or stable on a production
machine, and everyone else is using RELEASE? I guess I should have stuck
with 4.1x considering all the initial troubles with 5.x, and not go to 6
at all cause heck that can't be near ready considering the obvious
ineptitude of freebsd developers, the horrible track record speaks for
itself. Or should I run RedHat? ;)

Just wanted to contribute to the discussion in a productive manner, and

Did you follow the instructions outlined on how to cvsup your system?
Did you forget a step? Do them out of order.

There is a reason it's documented the way it is on the FBSD site.
Mainly - becasue it works.

I'm sure then when you review what you have done - it's going to be
something you did wrong.

So you updated your system yesterday and your LAN is still working

and the only odd thing i found was 1) in the output of ps -aux there was
over 100 IRQ's listed.. and 2) the network adapter is puking arp

With no fix in sight i re-installed the source and base binary's from
the installer which fixed the problem as the machine was back at
-RELEASE.. it worked great.. i thought at first i may have had left over
files in /usr/obj but from what i thought that should not affect the
kernel build/install.. regardless i followed the handbook and removed
the /usr/obj/usr dir and ran cvsup again to get the -STABLE source.. i
ran make cleandir and started the process over again..
and once again after the kernel install the machine loses it's
networking capabilities and starts spewing Arp requests...

Could anyone offer any insight?

Sorry about not having a dmesg but i dont have access to the machine at
the moment as it's dead :P

I don't know anything about the Novell end of things, but I'd suggest if
you can use the OSX box to serve your files, it will talk NIS/NFS,
AD/SMB, and Appletalk for your OS9 boxes,

OR

Windows as your server with the Services for Unix running, it will act
as a NIS master.

Probably more pretty than extremely accurate. I've actually mirrored a
port on the switch that's to our internet connection, and have ntop
monitoring that. Seems to be working fine, I guess I would like a bit
more of a warm fuzzy feeling that what i'm doing is right.

bytes transfered is better, but both appreciated. And ya, it seems like
there's a few solutions, none perfect. I am pushing for the replacement
of our Pix's, my preference is PF on *BSD, but again, they want
something that looks pretty.

Exim rocks I've used it for about 8 years.. Postfix is excellent I've
looked at it and it seems pretty easy to work with, I think some may
like it better as it can be administered through webmin (exim you
can't), especially if you want to give some admin privileges. Sendmail's
configuration is not trivial.

I much prefer using Maildir to store mail, works much better when
dealing with a lot of users with a lot of mail.

adduser re-writting groups file incorrectly

2005-08-04 Thread Derrick MacPherson
I have a 4.10 machine thats our internal mailserver. we use NIS for the
accounts, we add a couple local accounts just in case NIS can't be
contacted... We had our software developers make a change to all users
PATH, part of which points to a different version of the su command,
which we've since discovered doesn't work under fbsd (linux all over
here, but i'm trying to change it), that change was made without my
knowing. While I was out for lunch one the admins tried to su and
couldn't, they assumed they needed a local account, so they used the
adduser script to add a user. the next available UID was taken for the
account and when the account was created I think it errored on creating
the home dir, because it happened to clash with a UID out of NIS. The
big kafuffle out of this is that it wrote the group file with the NIS
entry written at the top, which caused mail to stop working as it was
picking up the wrong UID for mail out of NIS. I was able to recreate
this once, but not in 3 more attempts. I guess this isn't a question
just a comment I wanted to toss out there...

In my squid.conf:

this works for non IE browsers, IE fails:

auth_param ntlm program /usr/local/bin/ntlm_auth --helper-
protocol=squid-2.5-ntlmssp
auth_param basic program /usr/local/bin/ntlm_auth --helper-

(IE fails with: authenticateNTLMHandleReply: Error validating user via
NTLM. Error returned 'BH NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED')

Won't start when using:

auth_param ntlm program /usr/local/libexec/squid/ntlm_auth
auth_param basic program /usr/local/libexec/squid/ntlm_auth

I've tried adding the windows domain name and server IP after like:

How does that change what the cvs server is telling the client is

cvsup-mirror and my other local servers

2005-04-22 Thread Derrick MacPherson
I have about 8 freebsd boxes, I am using one with the ports cvsup-mirror
as the central cvs source for my other boxes, but when I point them at
the master cvs server I get this error:

cvsup -h cvs stable-supfile
Connected to cvs
Server message: Unknown collection "src-all"
Skipping collection src-all/cvs
Finished successfully

and in the server logs:
Apr 22 09:22:15 cvs cvsupd[24459]: +8 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[SNAP_16_1h/17.0]
Apr 22 09:22:15 cvs cvsupd[24459]: =8 Unknown collection "src-all"
Apr 22 09:22:16 cvs cvsupd[24459]: -8 [0Kin+0Kout] Finished successfully

I think i'm missing something quite small, but can't google what looks
like a correct answer. I've not changed configuration much beyond the
initial default installation config. Can someone point me in the right
direction?

cvs# uname -a
FreeBSD cvs.mainframe.ca 5.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE #5

Also, if I'm to set up a cvs server for my 4.1X boxes, can i use the
same server? if so how do I differentiate the 2 distros? And what about
ports, are they the same for 4.x and 5.x?

thanks.

I posted this last week and hadn't seen a repsonse to it, is there someone that
cares to take a poke at this? Just wondering if there's some form of memory
checking that's going on that Linux would not have, or not have turned on by

I am trying to move as much of our servers as I can to FreeBSD, and

Does FreeBSD not allow/recover from those types of errors the same way
Linux does? Any solutions?

A project that requires a 'heartbeat' type application

I've been asked to go ahead with a project that will require me to build
several machines, 2 of which are to be used for mysql, one being 'live'

that does failover, and I am wondering what I can do in freebsd that is
similiar, if my mysql live server dies, the backup server takes over. I
browsed ports but there's so much there I may be missing something.

RE: Routing question -- Samba

2004-02-09 Thread Derrick MacPherson
You can do that within the smb.conf

Use SWAT, advanced options, I think just for the share...

Error in messages.

I started seeing this today:

I umounted the disk, dumped it's contents to a spare disk.

Can you suggest some tests for this drive, or should I just get it replaced?

It's in the ports, but you can read about it at the website first

PHP4 with GD build problem.

2004-01-30 Thread Derrick MacPherson
Freebsd 4.7, ports up to date.

When I compile php4 with GD, I get this error:

ext/gd/libgd/gdkanji.lo: In function `do_convert':
ext/gd/libgd/gdkanji.lo(.text+0x57b): undefined reference to `iconv_open'
ext/gd/libgd/gdkanji.lo(.text+0x5c8): undefined reference to `iconv'
ext/gd/libgd/gdkanji.lo(.text+0x5f9): undefined reference to `iconv_close'
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/lang/php4/work/php-4.3.4.

It compiles fine without GD. Any ideas what's wrong, and how to fix?

Trying to compile sophie, configure issue with ld

2004-01-27 Thread Derrick MacPherson
I am pretty sure this is something wrong on my system's part, but I am not
100% sure what to do about it..

When I try and run configure, it fails, here's what it says in the
config.log

configure:3866: result: /usr/local/lib
configure:3875: checking for SAVIsweepFile in -lsavi
configure:3906: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall -Wl,--strip-all
-Wl,-rpath,/usr/local/lib -L/usr/local/lib -lrt conftest.c -lsavi >
&5
/usr/libexec/elf/ld: cannot find -lrt
configure:3909: $? = 1

Anyone help with that ld error?

Help with lost partition info.

2002-11-09 Thread Derrick MacPherson
I lost my partition info during an upgrade. I never actually wnet ahead
with the upgrade, yet but I guess I overwrote the info that says whre my
partitions are mounted, and I'm unsure whichi is which.. I don't want to
map / to the wrong partition and have the /etc/master.passwd and other
important files overwritten. I have the latest boot floppies, and I can
get to sysinstall - I'm wondering if there is a way to get the proper info
off the disks? I have a large partition that I can overwrite if it's
worth doing a minimal install to that partition to read teh origional
fstab file, but is there a easier or better way? I have to get this back
up ASAP, so anything that is quick and easy (HA!) would be great...

Thanks.
