Just a quick note/correction for whomever edits the web page:

2011-07-08 Thread SADM-IT Officer (HAL)
On the installation pages describing the process to make a USB installation,
you reference downloading win32-image-writer for making a USB from Windows.
Your link points to http://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/, which is actually
(or is now) https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/. I'm not sure why it
would change to HTTPS, but I thought it might be worth changing on the web
site. :)

I actually made it general (although I definitely should have pointed out the
instance I was looking at) on purpose; I find that in instruction sets such as
these there are often multiple sets of instructions. Either way, I'm glad you
were able to see it, just trying to help. :)

Re: Sorta OT - Backup solutions Mac to FreeBSD

I would like to be able to set the 2 (for now) clients to
automatically, incrementally backup certain directories, nightly.
Something encrypted would be nice aswell.

Here is a script I run out of crontab on my Mac. Things to note:
- Uses tar to create the backup.
- Uses rcp to get the backup to the FreeBSD box. Could
use scp if security is an issue.
- It is a cshell script.
- No software to find and install, everything you need
is already on your Mac and freeBSD boxes.
- I do a primary backup every night; no secondaries.
- The script has been in production for about a year
now and works flawlessly.
- Restores are easy, just reverse the process.
- I get an email daily giving me the status of the backup.
- The tar file is written to /tmp before it is copied
to the backup server so disk space could be an issue.
- The tar file could be gziped (tar czf ) to save space
at the expense of cpu time.
- The log directory contains the status of the last two
backups.
- The backup server maintains 31 days of primaries.

This is an issue here at work. We have very many FreeBSD 4.x
machines and a
growing number of FreeBSD 6.x. The change when daylight
saving time starts
and ends is an issue for machines in the United States and, we think,
those in Canada. The way to check if your zone file is
correct is to do

zdump -v /etc/localtime | more

Look for the following

/etc/localtime Sun Mar 11 09:59:59 2007 UTC = Sun Mar 11
01:59:59 2007 PST isdst=0 gmtoff=-28800
/etc/localtime Sun Mar 11 10:00:00 2007 UTC = Sun Mar 11
03:00:00 2007 PDT isdst=1 gmtoff=-25200
/etc/localtime Sun Nov 4 08:59:59 2007 UTC = Sun Nov 4
01:59:59 2007 PDT isdst=1 gmtoff=-25200
/etc/localtime Sun Nov 4 09:00:00 2007 UTC = Sun Nov 4
01:00:00 2007 PST isdst=0 gmtoff=-28800

If you see this, your zone file will handle the change
correctly. The 6.x
series has the corrected zone files. 4.x does not have this.
The best way
to handle this is to copy the zone file from
/usr/share/zoneinfo on a 6.x
machine to your 4.x.

resize/combine disk partitions

2005-09-15 Thread hal

I have three adjacent disk partitions as reported by
bsdlabel.

ad0s1g /local
ad0s1b swap
ad0s1h /home

/local is at around 107% full all the time and needs to
grow. /home is nearly empty ( new machine).

What I want to do is combine ad0s1g and h into
a new /local and add another disk for /home.

I have tried sysinstall disklabel to delete
the three partitions g, b, and h then recreate swap and
/local. But noo the program says it can't write
to the disk. BTW /local and /home were umounted and I
was in single user mode.

I suppose I could get creative with mount points but I
would rather resize/combine the three partitions into two.

How can I do that (short of a reinstall)?

rshd vs 5.4

2005-07-29 Thread hal

Trying to connect to my new backup server running 5.4 using rsh fails.

It worked well on my old backup server running 4.7 P25.

inetd.conf has the /usr/libexec/rshd line un-commented.

hosts.allow permits the remote host to connect to rshd.

The rsh file in /etc/pam.d has been patched by hand and looks good.

The message I am getting after some timeout period is:

server.host.name: Connection refused

It appears that inetd, which is running by the way, is not starting
rshd.

Can anyone give me a pointer or two to get this thing working?

FreeBSD vs. SCSI tape drive

2005-01-03 Thread hal
I have a backup server:
  OS freeBSD 4.7 P25
  SuperMicro X5DP8-G2 mother board
Symbios 875 SCSI controller with 1 Exabyte VXA-1 tape drive on
channel 0
Adaptec 3960D SCSI controller with 2 Seagate ST39173LW disk drives on
Channel 0
with 1 Dell Ultrium 2 tape drive on channel 1
2 3ware raid controllers with 2 mirror sets each

The problem:
About 50% of the time dump crashes writing to the Ultrium tape
drive. See the output of dmesg and /var/log/messages below.
A look at the tape drive's onboard error log shows nothing.
The tape drive diagnostics show no problems.
Can anyone offer a solution/insight/sympathy?
If you need more info please ask.

PCI-X sound card

2004-12-15 Thread hal
I have a need for a sound card on a backup server I have built.
Something sound blaster compatible would be wonderful, but
anything that works with 4.7 is ok.
The mother board, a Supermicro X5DP8-G2, has only PCI-X slots.
I am running FreeBSD 4.7.
All suggestions are welcome.

Well, FreeBSD is quite happy handling MS-DOS partitions, so there is no
reason you shouldn't use tar, together with whatever compression you
like. For example, I have backed up vfat partitions simply by mounting
them, changing to the root of them and doing tar cvjf
/odds/system-vfat.tar.bz2 ., /odds being a filesystem with lots of
space, then worked out a way to get that file onto a CD, or using
cdbackup, multiple CDs.
That's it. Worked like a charm.
Thanks to all who responded.

3Ware Escalade problem

2004-05-28 Thread hal
Here is what my system is telling me.
twe0: unexpected status bit(s) 80PCIPERR
twe0: PCI parity error: Reseat card, move card or buggy device present.
Here is what I am running.
FreeBSD 4.7 p25
boot disk IDE
SCSI tape drive
twe0 is an Escalade 7500-4
twe1 is an Escalade 7000-2
I have tried two different 7500-4 cards.
I have changed slots.
I have tried 3 different motherboards.
2 ASUS P2BS
1 MSI K7 Master-S
What I suspect.
The Escalade 7500-4 is a 64 bit card. I am using it on
a 32 bit bus. The manual doesn't say you can't but I am
suspicous. Both 7500-4 cards worked just fine on Linux
and Windows on both 32 and 64 bit motherboards IIRC.
Is it possible we have a driver issue here?
The machine is a backup server so reliability is important. :^)
So far I haven't lost any data but..

kernel panic in bpf_mtap

2003-06-24 Thread Hal Burch
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

In a 4.8-STABLE kernel (cvsup'd yesterday), I'm getting a kernel panic
early in bpf_mtap. I use bpf extensively (through the pcap library),
but am now getting panics. This occurs on code I'm working on,
not by default.

This is happening on my laptop running 4.7 and 4.8, as well as my
desktop running 4.8-RC from March, so it is unlikely this is a hardware
problem. They are attached to different networks right now. I can
reproduce the kernel panic with high degree of regularity (50% of the
times I run a program that takes less than 2 seconds).

Below is the output from a gdb of the kernel core dump. My read is
the mbuf chain got messed up. I've tried tracing back the execution
path to figure out where it's being set, but it's a bit opaque to
someone with limited knowledge of the FreeBSD kernel (me). In case
it matters, the received packet is an ARP request packet (hrd=ARPHRD_ETHER,
format=8, hln=6, pln=4, op=ARPOP_REQUEST).

The panic itself said the panic occured at bpf_mtap+0x18: addl
0xc(%eax),%esi.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be going on? It's possible,
perhaps likely, that my software has a bug which is corrupting memory
somehow, but I would not expect that to cause a kernel panic.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

 - Hal

HELP 3Ware Escalade 7000-2 raid controller

2003-02-27 Thread Hal Lynch
I am trying to install 4.7 on a system which has a
3Ware Escalade 7000-2 raid controller.
A look at the GENERIC configuration file shows
a twe controller for 3Ware raid subsystems. A
search of the FreeBSD docs and FAQ didn't offer
a lot of help. Google says it should work.
Configuration:
ATA cdrom on on-board controller
3ware 7000-2 raid card with two drives attached.
The install process hangs when booting after the device
selection menu.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom on how to make
this thing work?
can I boot from a raid subsystem?

HELP: telnet vs. security

2002-10-01 Thread Hal Lynch

I am running 4.4-RELEASE-p26.

I am trying to telnet out to a CISCO router. It looks as though
my side is trying to set up some kind of kerberos authentication.
See below. How do I prevent this from happening? The router
doesn't have a clue. I am not running kerberos.
