yesterday I tried to install FreeBSD 9 on my 'new' laptop - an IBM X31.
Since this model has no CD or floppy drive I copied the memstick-file to
such an USB-thing and tried to boot. The laptop freezes when the kernel
scans for the UBS-ports, booting impossible.
Now my question: can I
My IBM Thinkpad does that trick. But its some hardware-function and can
be switched via special key + FN8. Maybe download the service or
installation manual for your laptop and find some option? Maybe
also something in the setup?

Something traditional on my laptop - I use Blackbox 07.01.
It even takes less memory and appears a little more responsive then
Fluxbox.
Its a pity the developer didnt release any updates for years. Will see
how long it stands with more contemporary Unix systems.

SCSI-CD drives what do not allow me to boot from a CD.
It might be old fashioned, but its very easy just to boot the floppy and then
install all over ftp! I guess there are still a couple of systems (old
+laptops, servers) which require it.

I have just updated /usr/ports/misc/mc to Mignight Commander 4.6.1.
As root I can switch with CTRL+O to the shell prompt, all fine.
But as a normal user the shell prompt disappears when I hit CTRL+O.
Both xterm and without X I have the same symptoms. So I have set all mc-related

Thanks to all the input I found a solution what works for me:
FreeBSD 7.0 and Firefox 3.0a2 (the firefox-devel port)
1. I deinstalled swfdec.
2. Closed Firefox and renamed .mozilla to .mozilla.backup
3. Started firefox so to generate a new and clean .mozilla
4. #make install /usr/ports/www/nsplu

recent Flash pages.
I dont care about the animations, but it is frustrating not being able to enter

Installing a fresh BSD System gives me among others the option 'X-User'. In the
books I just find a hint its without source code, what I really dont need.
But is there anything else but the source code what I will miss later for a

I just checked on a clean bsd 6.3 and locate shows no xorg.conf.
Maybe invoke:
# xorgconfig
and see where it dumps the file.
