Definitely no bluescreens in FreeBSD. The system will behave exactly as intended and won't change its mind a few days after installation. :-) how much total ram and bit is my pc of amd athlon(tm) 64 x2 dual core processor 4000+ 2.11 GHz 960 MB RAM? That's a 64 bit CPU, if I remember correctly. The AMD64 version should run fine. But as you are a little bit low on RAM, you might consider using the i386 version (32 bit version) if you don't _need_ to run any 64 bit application. Especially as you've mentioned to run EXE files, this might be the better solution. From what I've heared, wine (the Windows compatibility pack) runs better on i386 than on amd64. (I'm running it myself on the i386 OS on a 64 bit system without any problems.) im always in internet watching live camers, what do you suggest me to use os type? Is this via web? In this case, only the web browser matters. The typical candidates Firefox and Chrome should be fine. The OS does not matter here. If you need a proprietary program to watch the live cameras, often available only for an outdated Windows version, running it with (the mentioned) wine should work. (I've successfully tried something like that with a program to watch CCTV cameras via Internet.) i like to save pictures and videos and never lost them,if you think your os is gonna spoil and lost my all files then i dont need it. Definitely no problem. But keep in mind: _You_ are responsible for creating backups! FreeBSD offers excellent tools to do so, no matter if you want to backup to disks, DVDs, the Cloud, or even to old-fashioned tape. Saving pictures from videos is no problem. There is mplayer and mencoder. It plays, records and converts _everything_. i want stable os and never to reinstall or update That approach is unreasonable, I think. You _should_ update when security updates become available. It's in _your_ interest to do so, because effciency, security and usability improves from version to version. Luckily, FreeBSD has an easy way of updating the OS. It's _independent_ (!) from your installed applications and of course from your data. You can also decide to update your programs independently. However, a install once, then keep using scenario is easily possible with FreeBSD. (My home system has been installed in summer 2011 and worked _flawlessly_ since that point, never touch a running system.) I suggest you make yourself familiar with FreeBSD by using the resources from http://www.freebsd.org/ and you _might_ also want to check out PC-BSD (might be perfect for what you want) and VirtualBSD (easy way to try it out without installing it). -- Polytropon Magdeburg, Germany Happy FreeBSD user since 4.0 Andra moi ennepe, Mousa, ... ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org

This doesn't sound like a Windows only error. do you have any problems within freeBSD or no problems?i dont like blue screen error or driver things and no matter what . Neither Linux, nor FreeBSD tend to lose data, you even shouldn't lose data when using one of Microsoft's less good Windows versions. It's more likely that users have less good backup and archiving strategies. If you want to consume multimedia by the Internet, you likely need to install security updates and software to use stuff based on proprietary software. You could set up a text editor and never need to update or to reinstall something, but the Internet and consuming multimedia likely need updates from time to time. Start an adventure ;), nobody will give you a guarantee, self-responsibility is a catchword for free/libre and open source software. FreeBSD and Linux are similar operating systems, on both kernels more or less the same multimedia applications do run, but the more recent versions are provided by Linux and multimedia is better supported for Linux. I'm an Arch Linux user, it's similar to FreeBSD regarding to a port like system, however, for your needs IMO Debian Linux stable release might be the less risky choice. 9.0 base.txz ftp download time out
I have a scripted ftp download for 8.x and 9.0 distribution files. Yes I have the correct paths. When I target 8.x releases it downloads the multiple distribution files. To get the complete group takes about 20 minutes and ends cleanly. But when I try to fetch the 9.0 base.txz file it says 100% completed and then times out. It also runs about 20 minutes just to download the single file. I do get the base.txz file downloaded but it ends uncleanly saying it timed out. All the mirrors issue standard login messages saying there are restrictions in effect. My question is there some restriction about time allowed per file downloaded? And now that the layout of the 9.0 distribution files has changed to a large file compared to many small files in a directory as for 8.0 is this causing the base.txz file download to time out? Hi RW, Thanks alot for your reply. Do you mean to say curl also not using a CONNECT to tunnel through to the actual server? How can I achieve downloading files HTTPS over a proxy? Thanks %20http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.os.freebsd.devel.hackers/42588 -Chandra Hi All, I am working on a project where i need to download a file via a proxy server using HTTPS protocol. So as of now networking is good to go for all machines. best!! Glad to hear it is resolved. The above is accomplished via this: defaultrouter=192.168.1.1 in your /etc/rc.conf. If you are using this machine as a gateway for the other machines and it is between your FIOS router and the other machines, the defaultrouter value for the other machines would point to the gateway box's internal facing address. -Mike ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org -- Here's my RSA Public key: gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys 5A4873A9 Share and enjoy!! ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org

But it is still quite necessary for me to get this host resolving external hosts of course! And yes I now realize that csup is part of the base system. But in order for me to use it I must resolve! I now have to start each one by hand whatever I try I can't seem to resolve external hosts, tho. I am writing this to you from another machine on the same network as the bsd machien. Even with IPv6 enabled things should still function even though IPv6 may not actually be in use. Sometimes it happens with DNS lookups it will try looking for an record first [IPv6], then time out and fall back to the normal IPv4 A record. This will just show as a short wait period and ultimately eventually resolves. I suspect that you are not even getting this far and the problem is something else. Just for the sake of simplifying things you could eliminate IPv6 from the picture if you are truly not using it. However, I do not think it is actually the cause (I could always be wrong here). [snip - forgetting about csup and ports for now] Not sure how this might have cause this but I edited my fstab file with some nfs mounts like so: 192.168.1.44:/mnt/nas/mnt/nas nfs rsize=32768,wsize=32768,timeo=14,intr 192.168.1.44:/mnt/store /mnt/store nfs rsize=32768,wsize=32768,timeo=14,intr 192.168.1.44:/mnt/home /home nfs rsize=32768,wsize=32768,timeo=14,intr This truly has me confused. In the above ifconfig output it is showing an IP address assigned of 192.168.1.44 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255. What I do not understand at all is why you would be wanting to NFS mount from 192.168.1.44 *to* 192.168.1.44, as indicated by the above fstab entries. Again, for the sake of simplification with divide and conquer, make sure all mountd, rpcbind, nfs_server, and nfs_client daemons are deactivated. Eliminate all things superfluous to troubleshooting the DNS problem. Once DNS gets fixed you can add stuff back one at a time. And when I rebooted the host pretty much it all went haywire! LDAP, DNS, Apache, MySQL, and even ALL NETWORKING which normally started with the host stopped working. I now have to start each one by hand whatever I try I can't seem to resolve external hosts, tho. So I restored the fstab file from backup and still I am stuck not resolving. Yes - leave fstab with no remote mounting/NFS stuff for now. /etc/resolv.conf looks ok to me so I would think I that I could ping out of the network. Sadly this is not the case! You should be able to ping by IP any/all machines within your local network. Sounds like this does work, but confirm and don't 'assume'. Next try and ping by IP to a host out on the Internet. Since you cannot resolve any names here is the IP to www.netbsd.org: 204.152.190.12. If you cannot ping by IP out from your network to the outside you do not have basic gateway connectivity working. If this is the case it will have to get fixed first. You need to fix this first, then worry about why the DNS is not working. Start with simple things such as substituting a known good cable from a working machine. Examine the LEDs on both the NIC and the hub/switch. Usually these will not be lit if there is no link. Is the hub/switch defective? Or locked up? I've seen hubs and switches lock up and a power cycle would make them operate again, for a while. Hubs or switches that lock up have an intermittent defect and should not be depended upon for the long run. Verify if you are using the correct driver. What version is the OS? Search bug reports and mail lists for known issues, e.g. such as someone else reported a problem with quite similar symptoms and the devs have already addressed it in HEAD and possibly MFC'd it to STABLE. Of course, if there is a fix you can't get at it until your network works. But you can also back up the train and tell us things like: did it used to work? and what did you do, or change, that made it begin not working? Some more details might give the 'fresh set of eyes' more to work with. Looking at the work that has been put into making FreeNAS, it might be worthwhile to ask the developers when a version based on 8.x and supporting your card will be available. But if that is not an option, looking at the features of FreeNAS [http://freenas.org/features], I'd say you need _at least_ the following ports to more-or-less replicate the functionality of FreeNAS; Network protocols: - net/samba34 (for windows clients) - net/netatalk (for Apple clients) - ftp/proftpd (FTP) - net/rsync - net/unison - (NFS comes with the base system) - dns/inadyn - net/istgt Extra Services - net-p2p/transmission (bittorrent) - net/mediatomb (UPnP server) - audio/firefly (iTunes/DAAP) - www/lighttpd or www/apache22 (web server) System tools - sysutils/smartmontools (disk monitoring) - sysutils/rsyslog55 (secure remote logging) - ports-mgmt/portmaster (keeping ports up to date) - (portsnap comes with the base system.) - (sshd comes with the base system.) What you'll be missing is the FreeNAS web setup tools. I would download and install FreeNAS on a virtual machine just to look at the configurations for the different ports, so you don't have to figure that out all by yourself. :-) On the other hand, if you only have to serve files for MS Windoze clients, you might get by with installing samba and its dependencies and not much else. FreeBSD ISOs available at very fast download
Hi, I work for a young company who developed a fast download platform for huge files (we mix central servers and pear to pear). I convinced my managers to put some ISO files in the platform and leave them available free of charge. So if you have users interested to download ISO very fast feel free to give them the download links. Our webpage for FreeBSD : http://linux-iso.voddnet.com/distribution.php?d=freebsd We mainly focus on Linux but we wanted to put at least one BSD distribution. The download links (you can put on any webpage) : CD FreeBSD 8.0 i386 - http://central-c-001.voddnet.com/command/servlet/Command?type=3client=4auto=trueoeuvre=499 CD FreeBSD 8.0 amd64 - http://central-c-001.voddnet.com/command/servlet/Command?type=3client=4auto=trueoeuvre=500 We can change and put the ISO you wish, as long as we still have enough disk space on our machines ;) Any remark is welcomed. One handy hint when installing is *don't feel you have to do everything from within sysinstall*. Your priority should be to get the OS up and running: everything else you can do from within the OS, which is a far more flexible and powerful platform than sysinstall. That power comes at the cost of maybe not being particularly obvious exactly how to do what you want, but that is why the Handbook exists. Like this: PACKAGEROOT=http://ftp.freebsd.org ; export PACKAGEROOT (Borne-shell) or setenv PACKAGEROOT http://ftp.freebsd.org (Csh-alikes) then use 'pkg_add -r pkgname' in the usual way. I REPEAT: maxima can not be built, because gnuplot fails on download
Dear Dan: I don't want to cause people to jump up and down, but one fact I am absolutely certain of!, is the following; Take a hard-drive you can write on, burn a copy of FBSD 7.2 onto a CD, and do the basic install. Then, when the base system is up, run sysinstall and do a Configure followed by Packages. Then go to math and select maxima. Then watch. Gnuplot, a dependency of maxima will fail. And thus without using the -f flag (as part of a PKG_ADD command,) you can not load a recent copy of Maxima on FreeBSD. This is the case not only for 7.2, but it's been true since at least version 6.1 And Gnuplot seems to be missing something called PDFlib -- it may have been redacted by someone who decided that it wasn't supposed to be public, I don't know. But notice I am describing two problems. One, an install of Maxima fails using the package method, because Gnuplot doesn't install, and also, using the ports tree, (see, I'm not talking about a package anymore;) gnuplot fails to install because the PDFlib ports support file can not be found. Oddly, the package install failure, while it names gnuplot, doesn't correctly identify the problem. On several systems on which I've tried to do the maxima install, the error message identifies the problem as an I/O error. Only when I attempt the ports-install does the problem show up correctly, that gnuplot depends on PDFlib, which can not be found. Obviously I run maxima without gnuplot graphics. I just had to learn the work-around, not a big deal... I look at it this way... For me, getting maxima up on FreeBSD has taught me a lot about how FBSD is organized. But really, someone should take the time to make this a solved problem. I can make gnuplot work, but I don't have the authority to change the package content. A similar problem exists with clusterit. Most of the commands work just fine. But the semaphore control, (called guards in clusterit,) don't lock. They simply don't. The program probably works fine in Linux. But myself and a friend, who have about 85 years of programming experience couldn't make it work. We scrapped it and wrote our own tool to do this. I love FreeBSD and I continue to be very impressed with the quality of this OS, not just the core, not just the documentation, not just the applications, simply, it is truly a remarkable 'product'. The people who have contributed to making this work should know that they have really contributed. And I use FBSD heavily -- in fact I and a couple of friends put together a cluster of machines and we never saw any other OS as a good choice. These two problems are all I have; So you see, I'm not unhappy. One, an install of Maxima fails using the package method, because Gnuplot doesn't install, and also, using the ports tree, (see, I'm not talking about a package anymore;) gnuplot fails to install because the PDFlib ports support file can not be found. I haven't had any problems building gnuplot or pdflib from source (and I haven't seen any complaints on the ports list either). You'll need to provide your error messages before we can help you with that. As for the maxima package install problem, gnuplot depends on pdflib, which is an optional component. pdflib has licensing restrictions that prevent a binary package from being created. There are a couple hundred ports like this, where they will build fine from ports but you aren't allowed to ship the binary. The gnuplot port should probably turn the pdflib option off when building packages for distribution (similar to how the audio/grip or audio/sox ports handle their dependency on audio/lame). If you build the pdflib port yourself, or build the gnuplot port and turn off the PDF option, then you'll be able to install the maxima package. It won't try and install things that are already on the system. If you can provide more detail, file a PR or post to the freebsd-ports mailing list and see if anyone else has seen the problem. -- Dan Nelson dnel...@allantgroup.com ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org
maxima can not be built, because gnuplot fails on download
I have a fix for gnuplot; How do I get it reviewed and perhaps incorporated into FreeBSD? Notice, I am not saying gnuplot is bad, it just doesn't work, not since at least FBSD 6.1. FreeBSD 7.1 as a router - poor download speed, but normal upload
Hello everybody! Please help me if you can. I have a home server built on Gigabyte MiniITX motherboard with VIA C3 800MHz CPU and 512M RAM aboard. Connection to ISP is done over rl1 using port pptp-client. The problem is that there is very low download speed. My ISP provides symmetric 4Mbps line, but download speed is poor - about 1 Mbps. Upload speed is OK. I called ISP, they asked me to connect WinXP computer and measure speed. It was normal, therefore there is an issue in my server. If you could point me in the right direction, it would be wonderful. Thank you very much for your work!
