I just did a make release using RELENG_6_1 The announcement your referring to is consistent with the docs, but I switched tags from RELENG_6 to RELENG_6_1 yesterday when I started having make release commands fail, and that fixed the problem. I think they started the new tag early. It will become RELENG_6_1 when the official release is made. The transition from 6.0 to 6.1 went smoothly here, so you should be good to go with the new src tree.
